ITALY

ABRUZZO

Abruzzo is an east-central Italian region which is home of one of the most famous Italian red grape varieties,

Montepulciano. The moderating effect on the weather from the Adriatic Sea coupled with the ability of the Pennine

Mountains to trap warm air, creates Abruzzo’s unique climate to ripen this versatile and generous grape variety.

The style can vary from every day inexpensive red such as our V&C Montepulciano 2012 and MODA Talamonti to

complex and sophisticated wines such the rustic Tre Saggi 2011 or the modern and fruit-driven Alta Quota Colline

Teramane DOCG 2009. There are two new whites from the region made from the re-introduced Pecorino grape.

Two real stunners from Cantine Gran Sasso and Talamonti.

BASILICATA

Basilicata is a small region in south-central Italy. It is one of the most mountainous region with only 8% classified

as plain. The main mountain, the Vulture volcano gives the name to the only DOC from a single black skin grape

variety “Aglianico del Vulture DOC”. The Aglianico grape find its perfect growing environment in this volcanic soil

at an altitude of 800m above the sea level. Check out our Pipoli red and white for a new experience in delicious,

CAMPANIA

When Italy started to overhaul its wines in the 1980’s, Campania was ignored for a long time as being deeply

unfashionable, sticking with native varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano and Falanghina at a time when everyone

else was enthusing over the likes of Chardonnay, Merlot and other French grapes variety. Today things have

changed and these grape varieties have caught the attention of wine pundits – in fact these grape varieties are so

exciting they have been planted elsewhere in Italy and also in Australia. There is an excellent range from Vesevo,

from the best vineyards of the Irpinea hills, between 400 and 700 metres. Vesevo capture the essence of this

fantastic region with some top wines such as Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. We are delighted to

welcome the Ercolino family with their Vinosia Lacryma Christi wines and their passion and dedication by

adding a modern spin to native grapes varieties.

EMILIA ROMAGNA

Emilia Romagna is changing from a region known for its bulk, cheap, sweet Lambrusco exports to a region

seeking to spread the good news of superb quality, dry, traditional Lambrusco. The Cantine Medici Ermete is a

great example of the turnaround from bulk producer to high quality production and diversification instigated by

the fourth generation, namely Alberto Medici. They own 60 hectares of land spread out among the finest

wine-growing areas in the Emilia-Romagna region and include the zety Sauvignon Blanc, Bonarda and Gutturnio from

Del Duca as well as the ‘Concerto’ Lambrusco secco. A new entry in our selection is the Albana from Podere La

Berta. Made from the Albana grape which was Italy’s first white DOCG wine.

ITALIAN DESSERT WINES

At V&C we are very passionate about Italian dessert wines so that we try to cover the most significant and

representative styles from the main regions. Ranging from the light Passito Moscato from Araldica, bottled

under our own label, and the Barolo Chinato from Piemonte; Recioto della Valpolicella from Giovanni Allegrini

and Brigaldara; Pierpan’s Le Colombare; Vin Santo from Selvapiana, Capezzana and Paneretta in Tuscany; and

not least, from the hot southern regions, the fabulous trio of Le Passule in Calabria, the Passito di Noto in Sicilia

and the emminently drinkable Aleatico rosso A-Mano from Puglia.

ITALIAN DRY SPARKLING

We are delighted to continue with the range of Proseccos from Ruggeri from the DOCG Valdobiadene, still head

and shoulders above all of the others we have tasted. For those who are looking for a more complex and

premium quality try the Riserva Giustino Bisol 2011 and the Cartizze Canevel 2011 – and still excellent good value.

For the Champagne lovers we have some of the Metodo Classico wines such as Ferrari Brut and Rosé and the

Giulio Ferrari Riserva. We also have the outstanding sparkling wines from Franciacorta, the Gran Cuvee Rose and

Cuvee Brut from Bellavista, and a new entry from one unexpected region Sicily – Planeta’s bone dry, voluptuous

ITALIAN SWEET SPARKLING

There is only one place in Italy and in the worlds where the Moscato grape become sparkling and this is Asti in

Piemonte. The Moscati of Asti with only 5% alcohol and a gentle fizz are an absolutely delightful expression of this

aromatic and delicate grape, with unique aromas of peach and spring blossom. It is important to do not confuse

Moscato d’Asti DOC, which is frizzante and only 1 to 2 atmospheres of pressure, with the Asti Spumante DOCG

with its full spumante with 5 atmospheres of pressure in the bottle and has an alcohol of 7-8%ABV. It is a pity that

some mass-produced, low quality wines have spoiled the name of Asti. Another sweet sparkling from Piemonte is

the red Brachetto d’Acqui with its aromas of strawberries. These wines are perfect for the after-dinner palate

teaser or as a dessert wine to match with fruit salads for example.

LAZIO

Frascati is one of several styles of Italian wine which has suffered in the eyes of the public after being linked

with inexpensive, watery, nondescript products. However, like many styles of Italian wine, it has benefited

from a recent increase in investment in the region. We would be remiss in our duties if we did not showcase

an example of Frascati as it should be, that example coming once again from Casale Marchese. The 2010 is

elegant, savoury and robust, a white of distinction.

LOMBARDIA

This region is home of the Sfurzat della Valtellina DOCG, a full bodied, rich and complex wine which is produced

only in the best years and in limited quantities from Chiavennasca grape, aka Nebbiolo. The grapes are dried,

using the same technique of appassimento of the most famous Amarone della Valpollicella, but vinified as a dry

wine, with weight and complexity. An important white DOC to consider is Lugana made from the local Turbiana

grape on the shores of Lago di Garda. The Lugana I Frati is particularly impressive with fresh perfume of white

flowers, peaches and ripe lemons. Also try the Bianco di Custoza made predominantly from the Fernanda grape.

Cavalchina’s Amedeo is the perfect expression of this DOC wine from vineyards around the town of Custoza.

MARCHE

Marche’s claim to fame is a white wine called Verdicchio made from the Verdicchio grape. The finest expressions of

Verdicchio are to be found in this list!! The Classico Le Vaglie from Santa Barbara is aromatic and fresh with just

a hint of new oak on the palate. The Monte Schiavo range ranges from basic easy-drinking to superior wines for

ageing. Our favourite is the San Floriano. A well balanced wine with something for everyone – inrense, lifted

aromas, great mouth-feel and a long finish – and it is great value! PS You may say that Verdicchio is considered

the best wine for fish in Europe but we couldn’t possibly comment…

PIEMONTE

The world-renowned Piemonte is the birthplace of many fine wines, mainly elegant and complex reds such as

Barolo and Barbaresco. However Piemonte is also the home of Gavi, a clean and crisp white backed by a fullness

of flavour that has proved very popular of late. The Gavi di Gavi from Terre da Vino is the best value example, but

the Giustiniana continues to impress. The Nebbiolo Langhe from Produttori del Barbaresco is an excellent

introduction to both a superlative winemaker and to the region’s more famous red wines.

PIEMONTE-BARBARESCO

We are in a fine wine territory here and, similar to the Cote d’Or in France, the best vineyards are classified not

so much as Cru’s, in the sense of a specific area or collection of vineyards but as individual vineyards. Each

vineyard has its own specific soil type and microclimate. Sun exposure, slope gradient and altitude, in short what

is known as terroir. These special vineyard names are Rabaja, Ovello, Pajé, Pora and Mungagota and we import

these directly from the Produttori del Barbaresco, the oldest cooperative in Barbaresco. They are outstanding.

They can all be drunk young but they will all benefit from at least three to four years ageing and will improve over

twenty years. We could not miss out the big name in Barbaresco, Angelo Gaja, the man who started the

Barbaresco revolution and introduced this fine wine to the world.

PIEMONTE-BARBERA

While we may desire the prestige afforded by having a Piemontese wine on our dinner table, we aren’t always in

the mood for a heavy, oaky bruiser of a wine. For that we have Barbera, one of the most satisfyingly drinkable

wines in the world. Araldica’s Ceppi Storici is standout for value, but look out for its big brother, the Rive from Il

Cascinone vineyard. We also have the gorgeous La Luna e i Falo from the outstanding Terre da Vino along with

the more full-bodied Conca Tre Pile from the highly respected Aldo Conterno.

PIEMONTE-BAROLO

Barolo is a village which gives the name to one of the most prestigious DOCG wine in Italy and in the world. It is

made from one varietal, Nebbiolo. The best vineyards are located in the villages of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione

Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba. Barolos are rich wines , deeply concentrated, full bodied with pronounced

tannins and acidity. Very complex, the aromas associated with it include camphor, chocolate, dried fruit, tar,

damsons, eucalyptus, leather, rose, liquorice, mint, plums, mulberries ,spice white truffles as well as dried and

fresh herbs. Barolo has great ageing potential although some are made to be drunk just few years after bottling.

Try our Paesi Tuoi or Dagromis Gaja – two very different Barolos but both good for early drinking. But if you can

wait, if you are patient o for the single Cru Cannubi 2007 E. Pira or Parafada 2007 Massolino.

PUGLIA

Puglian wines at last have lost their old reputation for being cheap bulk produced wine full bodied and often heavy in

alcohol. We are constantly expanding our Puglian selection, especially with those unusual grape varieties, those hidden

gems, such as the red Susumaniello, Malvasia Nera, Negroamaro, Uva di Troia and the white Verdeca. Cantina due Palme

bottles our own-label, inky black, rich smooth Brindisi Rosso as well as their soft, smooth Primitivo di Manduria. Mark

Shannon’s A-Mano range represents fantastic quality and great value for money. His wines are generous and instantly

appealing from his honeyed, aromatic white Fiano-Greco, a stunningly lifted Rosato and his super smooth Negroamaro and

Primitivo. The A-Mano deliciously sweet Aleatico rosso is one of Italy’s finest dessert wines.

Sicily contains more vineyards than any of the other Italian regions, but an average Sicilian consumes less wine

than elsewhere in Italy - which means all the more for us! Planeta’s range remains the outstanding performer and

we are glad to in introduce in our list two of their new wines, the white Carricante and the red Nerello Mascalese,

both from the Mount Etna. Another new and truly exceptional red wine is the Nero d’Avola from Vigneti Zabu which

TOSCANA

One of the most famous regions in Italy for high-quality reds well known for its Chiantis and Brunellos. However

there are many other outstanding wines from areas outside Chianti such as the Morellino di Scansano perhaps, or

the superb Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines from the coastal areas around Bolgheri. The Flaccianello

and Cepparello are still our favourite ‘super Tuscans’. Also look at the Mediterra Rosso. Tuscany is also home to

exceptional whites such as the Vermentino Solo Sole from the coast and the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Terruzzi

& Puthod DOCG and the Burgundy-like Chardonnay from Paolo de Marchi.

TOSCANA-CHIANTI COLLI_FIORENTINI____________________________

We list two producers from the Florentine hills: Leonardo makes a cracking basic Chinati in that fresh,

fruit-driven, grapey style. Their Riserva has a bit more weighty. Our star wine from this area is the Da Vinci Riserva. It is

so well balanced and punching well above its weight. This zone is also home of our own registered trademark

Chianti, the ‘Fiasco’. It is bottled for us by Leonardo. 50 years ago the Fiasco or straw flask contained fairly basic,

cheap wine. Today we continue promoting the iconic symbol of Italian wine but it now contains a first rate Chianti –

well worth the extra money you pay for the manufacture of the straw flask.

TOSCANA-BRUNELLO

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most popular red Italian wines that we sell - and with good reason. These are

wines with superb structure and complexity, elegant and powerful with exceptional ageing potential. Brunello is

generally now being with the immediate drinker in mind. So yes, with lots of ageing potential but also easily

drinkable now. 2007 is definitely a much more intense and powerful vintage than 2008. But wait till you taste the

2008 vintage of our own Brunello Il Valentiano. A lifted, aromatic nose of cedar and violets but also depth and

power. Such elegance and silky smooth tannins. Very approachable now and the best value Brunello on the list.

TOSCANA-CHIANTI CLASSICO

Chianti Classico is one of the flagship Italian wines from this very restricted area in Toscana. We have selected

what we consider the best in the market: the sheer elegance and refinement of Isole e Olena, Fontodi the

powerhouse and Castello della Panaretta approachability and lower cost. The Poggio Rosso from San Felice is a

more traditional, evolved style.

The Chianti Colli Senesi zone makes wines that are geared towards earlier drinking, tending towards more

fruit-driven wines than elsewhere in the DOC. Bichi Borchesi’s Chianti performed well at recent tastings and our

TOSCANA-SASSICAIA

Voted number 2 out of 50 in Decanter Magazine’s – Italy’s Best-Ever Reds feature, Sassicaia was the first of the

Supertuscans to buck the trend of the restrictive DOC system to create a richer and more complex wine than the

somewhat lighter local styles on offer. The Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta used French grapes at his

estate at Tenuta San Guido to produce this most excellent deep red wine. We are fortunate enough to have

examples from many of the vintages produced over the past 20 years, from the quality and affordable ones to the

truly stratospheric vintages. A wine everyone MUST try at least once.

TOSCANA-TIGNANELLO

Marchese Antinori’s most famous wine, the Tignanello, is primarily Sangiovese blended with a touch of

Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. While not the first of the Supertuscans (an honour belonging to

Sassicaia), it was Tignanello which sparked a revolution in 1971 in the Italian wine industry over what was

possible in the country’s viticulture. This occurred not just because it was made with French grapes as an

integral part of the blend, but because such a wine was just so good when grown in Italian soil. In Tuscan

soil.

TRENTINO ALTO-ADIGE

Lying on the border between Italy and Austria, the Germanic influence on the culture of the region and

subsequently its viticulture has been considerable. Coupled with the cooler climate owing to its more northerly

location, one should expect aromatic wines of great elegance and concentration. Franz Haas is an accomplished

winemaker of tremendous skill with white wines, his Pinot Nero also worthy of careful consideration. Our praise

goes to the Cavit co-operative’s range. It is the largest co-operative in Trentino Alto-Adige. Cavit manages the

impossible: to mass produce.

MOLISE________________________________________________________

Molise is the youngest region in Italy. It was originally part of Abruzzo until 970. It is home to one of the most

extraordinary wines in Italy - a revelation to us when we first tasted it a few years ago. Riserva Biferno DOC is a

red wine made in San Bonifacio from a blend of Montepulciano, Aglianico and Trebbiano. A complex and intense

red with rich fruit and chocolate with hints of blackberry jam and a dusty edge. On the palate is full bodied full of

ripe fruit, a touch of wood, firm tannins and a long finish. It's so unusual to find such a fascinating and drinkable

wine at this low price

VENETO

Veneto is the biggest wine producing region in Italy. It has the beauty and the beast of the Italians DOCs. That

means that the quality of the wines go from the ‘beast’ of rather poor wines grown on the plains (to service

profit-hungry supermarkets) to the ‘beauty’ of outstanding, hillside-grown wines from authentically

conscientious family growers. We stay with the ‘beauties’ from high quality, soft fruit Valpolicella, via rich

Ripasso and powerful Amarone to the superb Soave Classico (The La Rocca Pieropan is one of the finest white

wines of Italy). Veneto is enjoying a renaissance second to none in Italy with record breaking sales of Ripasso

and Amarone. There are so many top-notch producers such as Allegrini, Brigaldara, Zenato, Tommasi,

Pieropan, Anselmi and Torre d’Orti (their Ripasso is our best- selling Veneto wine). Also a fantastic selection of

“Superveneto” reds such Palazzo della Torre from Allegrini, Secco Tradizionale Bertani, La Poja and La Grola

from Allegrini. Our own-label wines V&C Pinot Grigio and VC Garganega from the Valpantena zone are hugely

popular and offer that ‘perceived added value’ we are all looking for in these troubled times.

ARGENTINA

Argentina has seriously earned a great postion in our range this year. We do love Mendoza’s powerful Malbec and

perfumed Torrontes, however we could not do without something new and interesting red wines such as the

Enamore, a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda and Cabernet Franc or the

Crios Pinot Noir. The Finca

Los Primos Torrontes, was voted best white wine in our Spring Tasting. As for the sparkling Bianchi Brut, it has to

be tasted to be believed. Exotic fruit aromas and a delicious, biscuity, yeasty palate and a long nutty aftertatse.

Great balance.

AUSTRALIA-ADELAIDE HILLS

Possessing a cooler climate compared to other regions of Australia, winemakers in Adelaide Hills have been

doing great things with a variety of grapes. The majority of the region suits early-ripening styles such as

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the northwest sees enough sun to allow the growth of high-quality Shiraz and

Cabernet Sauvignon. We have on our shelves the wines from Michael Smith and Martin Shaw, excellent

expressions of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the white are joined by the great

2008 vintage of their Shiraz.

AUSTRALIA-BAROSSA VALLEY

The Barossa Valley is one of the names people recognise when they think of Shiraz in Australia, that’s because

almost no other place in the world is able to produce such a punchy, chocolaty and spicy Shiraz. We are also

excited about the marriage of powerful Shiraz and light, fruity Grenache. Three cheers for Charles Melton’s

Chateauneauf-Du-Pape-beater Nine Popes and his gently aromatic Rose of Virginia sitting proudly alongside the

best wines on our list plus a fantastic new arrival in our range, the 2010 Wallace by the talented winemaker Ben

Glaetzer.

AUSTRALIA-MOUNT BARKER

Mount Barker is an area located in the sub-district of the Great Southern region in Western Australia.

Plantagenet was the first winery in the region to discover the grace of this cool climate region. Its proximity

to the ocean ensuring the slow ripening of the grapes which increases the aromatic qualities of the grapes.

Warm up with the Omrah range of good quality/value reds, then upgrade to their premium Plantagenet range,

whose Shiraz varieties and Chardonnay

are made with strictly selected finest grapes.

AUSTRALIA-NE VICTORIA

Rutherglen is the home of, Muscat, one of the world’s most intense and concentrated wines.

In spite of very

different climatic conditions and soils, lack of water and distance from traditional markets, early German and

British settlers planted vines in the gently undulating country abutting the Murray River in north East Victoria.

There are about 200 Muscat varieties, but only one is used to make Rutherglen Muscat - known locally as Black

Muscat.

AUSTRIA – OSTERREICH

While Austrian wine had been overshadowed by the internationally-renowned wines of its northern neighbour,

our customers have started to take notice of what the country has to offer, in particular the indigenous Grüner

Veltliner which produces aromatic wines with good acidity and complexity. Nicely dry, crisp Rieslings and soft, green

peppercorn Pinot Noir. Fred Loimer is one of the best producers, whose aim is to continually improve the quality of his

wines. Since 2006, the vineyard and cellar work has been conducted according to biodynamic principles.

CALIFORNIA WINE

A California range is starting taking shape on our list. To our soft, fruit-driven Zinfandel we have added some

superb wines. The proximity to the Pacific ocean allows cool air currents to come in-land cooling the vineyards

closest to the coast. Whereas, Sonoma and Napa counties remain hot due to the lack of this cooling influence Au

Bon Climat is recognized worldwide for their classically-styled wines and we list their elegant Pinot Noir and

outstanding Chardonnay

CANADA

Canada has made its mark on the wine scene through the production of top quality dessert wines. We list an Ice

Wine made from Vidal grapes, an hybrid variety produced from the

Vitis vinifera

variety Ugni blanc (also known as

Trebbiano Toscano) and another hybrid variety, Rayon d'Or (Seibel 4986). The example from Peller is possibly the

purest expression of the grape that you will ever taste. It strikes a harmonious blend of acidity and honeyed fruit -

nectar of the gods??

CHILE

When the Spanish imported grapes with which to make Communion wine in the 1500’s, those less concerned

with the liquid’s application as part of a religious ceremony took to the production (and drinking!) of wine,

wholeheartedly. Today, Chile is one of the greatest locations from which to get high-quality wine at relatively

inexpensive prices. Our selection may appear very reasonably priced but there is nothing ‘cheap’ about the

fresh fruit and delicious flavours contained within. Of particular note are the wines made from Carmenere,

spicy, earthy and powerful wines that hold up to a variety of strongly-flavoured food. Great white wines also

made from Sauvignon Blanc and aromatic Gewurztraminer from Emiliana – whose wine are organic.

The aromatic Gewurztraminers and elegant Rieslings of Alsace denote the region as a byword for excellent
