Father Peters and Adkins Avenue
Back in 1991, when I was just ordained and began my first assignment here at St.
John the Baptist, I learned much about Father Peters and his determined leadership of our parish. One of the most fascinating stories I heard surrounded his decision to close Adkins Avenue. I am sure he consulted with City Hall, yet the way the legend unfolded, Fr. Peters realized it was not safe for our children to have to cross a city street whenever it was time for lunch or to use the gym, or to go to the church. So Father Peters took the short stretch of Adkins Avenue and made it part of St. John the Baptist Parish.
In recent years we have been leaving the gate open to through traffic between the High School building and the rectory. Frequently drivers speed through the area even though there are many pedestrians using the ex- act same space; people visiting the parish or the many agencies whose missions are lived out on our parish grounds. Parish Council will meet on August 21 to decide whether to close the gate to through traffic. We could still open it on Saturdays and Sundays to facilitate access to parking for Sunday Mass.
Please let me or the members of Parish Council know what you think of the possibility of closing the gate to through traffic on Adkins Avenue; especially if you believe the gate should remain open for some reason. If we do close the gate, we will continue to receive feedback regarding whether or how well it is working for our mis- sion and for our community.
A Grief Which Knows No End
Our hearts go out to the victims' families in Gilroy, California; El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. We know that when divisions and hatred seem to have conquered, it is then that Christ's power to save is revealed. We can- not make sense of these tragedies, of the hate and division which is deepening every day in our country, our culture and in our world; except in the light of our faith in Jesus Christ. Christ has won for us the victory over sin and death. We now claim that victory and pledge ourselves only to love in Jesus' name, trusting that the wisdom of the Holy Spirit will guide us to the new creation. We can make a better world. Now, more than ever, we hear the Baptist's cry: “Prepare the way of the Lord.”
