EIDFJORD CRUISE PORT

HARDANGERFJORD

The fjord, the mountains and the waterfalls within 30 minutes from Eidfjord

(3)

Eidfjord is located in the innermost part of the famous Hardanger-fjord. In May 2005 Eidfjord Cruise Port opened, and has become a famous port since the opening. The cruise port is located in the centre of Eidfjord and offers the very best and safest conditions. In 2005 we were the winner of “the Most Improved Port Facilities”, Dream world Cruise Destinations 2005 Awards and we received a new price in 2006 for “the Most Improved Destination”, Dream world Cruise Destinations 2006 Awards.

Eidfjord Cruiseport - Hardangerfjord

3 Eidfjord has a population of around 960. We are a thriving community and enjoy the fjord and mountains throughout the year. Hardangerfjord is the second longest fjord in Norway, 179 km – also called the Queen of the Fjords.

Vøringfossen waterfall has been Norway’s most visited natural attraction for a long time. The Hardanger-vidda plateau and the Hardangerfjord are well-known far beyond Norway’s borders.

Due to the mild climate the region is also the orchard of Fjord Norway – here we grow apples, plums, pears and cherries. The blossom season in May/June is unique – the mountain sides are covered by white, pink and red flowers, from the white snow at the top down to the blue fjord. July – October is the harvesting season for fruit, sweet cherry and cider festivals in the small villages along the fjord.

Eidfjord offers a unique natural environment. With large contrasts and small distances you can experience the most and best of what Norway has to offer. Our visitors can find peace and quiet in the natural environ-ment, in addition to visiting many of our attractions. Eidfjord is the gateway to the Hardangervidda, the larg-est high mountain plateau in Europe and Norway’s larglarg-est national park.

Welcome to regular yearly events and festivals in Eidfjord: Winter Festival (Feb/March), National Day (May 17th), Hardanger Musikkfest (Mai/June), Midsummer Night (June 23rd), Summer Festival (August), Minitri-athlon (August), Norseman Xtreme TriMinitri-athlon (August), Vøringfoss race (September), Food Festival (Sept/ Oct).

Eidfjord Old Church

According to the saga, the influential and mighty Rich-Ragna, who ruled at the time, has been credited with the building of this church. Her reason for building the church lay in her desperate need for forgivness for all her wicked deeds. Amongst her many spiteful deeds she allowed her own husband to drown while they were on their way to town. She left him on a reef and when the tide came in, he drowned. Some of the stonewalls in the church measure as much as 5 ft in thickness. The pulpit is probably from about A.D. 1613. Both the front and the pulpit are decorated in panels with a variety of motives.

Nestling in the heart of the Hardangerfjord coun-tryside, and dwarfed by the surrounding moun-tains stand the old Eidfjord church, a stonebuilt

Inger-Marie talks about sled dogs, and her victory in the 1,000 km Finnmark Race, where she was the first woman to win Europe’s longest dogsled-race. Hear about working with sled dogs, see the husky-pack of 20 dogs let loose in the big yard to run and if you wish you can enter the dog yard.

See dog sledding, sleds and other equipment demonstrated. Visit the puppy farm and become familiar with the soft and cuddly baby puppies, pat little Icelandic horses or see our pigs “Fat” and “Fiin” dig in the soil. Combine your visit with a lunch / dinner or coffee / waffle served in the “Stable” or in the dining room. Our “Stable” is a very nice, very special, crudely decorated dining room with rough pine logs and thick long tables where you sit on woolen blankets and reindeer skins. If the weather is good, we turn the double doors aside and have a dazzling view of the Hardangerjøkulen glacier.

The juice and the cider are produced with modern equipment, but the recipes are old and traditional. Due to increase in demand, production has increased rapidly over the years.

During the guided tour you’ll view and receive information about the production site. Fruit juice samples, cider and local food will be served in the farm restaurant.
