ROLE DESCRIPTION

Post title: Distributed Systems Engineer Job Purpose

Train, assist and advise academic staff, students and researchers on ICT related issues within the context of the environment in which each school/subject area operates.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide on-site, telephone and electronic support to academic staff and students working across the university. Ensure effective communication is applied to respond to particular needs,

sometimes at short notice.

• Provide assistance in training, and advising academic staff, students and researchers on ICT related issues within the context of the environment in which each school/subject area operates.

• Support the University Teaching Programmes in ICT related subjects, as appropriate. Assist in preparing and presenting formal classes, supervise computer laboratories and support tutorial classes in liaison with academic staff in the University, as directed by Associate IT Director-Support.

• If and when directed, attend meetings and other relevant gatherings with Schools to gain an understanding of particular needs, and provide on-going advice and ICT awareness to Schools staff (in liaison with other relevant experts within ISA).

• Working with functional support (Card Centre, Student Printing), deal with maintenance of printers in local use, providing toner and paper as necessary, and providing subsequent support.

• Provide advice and assistance in staffing the ISA Functional Support facilities (Card Centre, Student Printing).

• If and when required, provide assistance to and participate in projects conducted by Direct Services or other ISA teams as directed by Associate IT Director-Support.

• Ensure that there is effective documentation at all times so that work may be shared with other Direct Service staff. Engage in cross-functional teamwork with other members of ISA staff to ensure that a complete service is provided to customers.

• Participate in the development and implementation of PC laboratory “images”.

• Operate in ISA helpdesk and respond to Help Desk calls and other contact from customers, speedily and professionally, in accordance with escalation procedures set out by the Service Desk Manager and Associate IT Director-Support.

Computer labs are operational.

• Assist in preparing the inventory of the Aston University IT equipments.

• Provide all services outlined in this job description on-site (face-to-face), over the telephone, or electronic means as necessary.

• Attend proposed training and learning courses as necessary. Keep up to date with ICT technology and other relevant areas of change through formal and informal means.

• Undertake any other tasks as appropriate to the grade of this post as may be designated by the Associate IT Director-Support.

Assistant Distributed Systems Engineer

OUTLINE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE APPOINTMENT

Term of appointment: Continuing appointments are offered. The appointment is Grade 7 and the salary range for this grade is £23,811 - £28,401 per annum. Holiday entitlement: 30 days per annum, in addition to 13 days public and university

holidays.

Pension: Eligible staff are offered a defined benefit pension with the University Superannuation Scheme (USS).

Performance related pay: In addition to the basic salary, the University operates a PRP scheme. Awards are determined on an annual basis.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will be required to produce evidence of their qualifications upon joining the University.

Relocation: Newly-appointed staff are required to establish their homes within reasonable daily travelling distance to and from the University. The University operates a relocation scheme to assist newly-appointed staff in meeting this requirement. Full details of the relocation scheme are included with offers of appointment.

Medical examination: It is a condition of appointment that newly-appointed staff receive medical clearance from the University’s Health Centre.
