PRELUDE
The Chrism Mass
Welcome back to the Cathedral! With Saint Peter, who witnessed the glory of Christ at His transfiguration on Mount Tabor, we can say with joy, “Lord it is good that we are here!”
We appreciate your patience observing safety protocols together. The wearing of a mask is required in the Cathedral as a safety precaution for you and your neighbors. Restrooms are closed, except for emergency use.
If you should have need to use a restroom, please be prepared to follow sanitization instructions provided for the restrooms. Congregational singing is permitted; singing gently, as though whispering, may prove to be more comfortable at this time.
If you are disposed to receive Holy Communion and feel safe to do so, please refer to page 14 for guidelines.
Specially trained ushers are on hand to escort you throughout the Cathedral, as well as to answer any questions you may have.

PENITENTIAL ACT Form A
V. Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
R. I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
[All strike their breast]
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
V. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
R. Amen.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me;
He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the lowly, to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners,
To announce a year of favor from the Lord and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all who mourn;
To place on those who mourn in Zion a diadem instead of ashes,
To give them oil of gladness in place of mourning, a glorious mantle instead of a listless spirit.
You yourselves shall be named priests of the Lord, ministers of our God shall you be called.
I will give them their recompense faithfully, a lasting covenant I will make with them.
Their descendants shall be renowned among the nations,
and their offspring among the peoples;
All who see them shall acknowledge them as a race the Lord has blessed.

SECOND READING Revelation 1:5–8
He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father.
[Grace to you and peace] from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth.
To Him Who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His Blood, Who has made us into a Kingdom, priests for His God and Father, to Him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.
Behold, He is coming amid the clouds, and every eye will see Him,
even those who pierced Him.
All the peoples of the earth will lament Him.
Yes. Amen.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,
“the One Who is and Who was and Who is to come, the Almighty.”
[After the reading.]
V. The word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
The Chrism Mass 2021 i 7 [Before the reading.]
V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.
V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
R. Glory to You, O Lord.
Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had grown up, and went according to His custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Rolling up the scroll, He handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at Him.
He said to them,
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
[After the reading.]
V. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
[All remain standing until Bishop Scharfenberger has reverenced the Book of the Gospels.]
GOSPEL Luke 4:16–21
HOMILY [Please be seated.] The Most Reverend Edward B. Scharfenberger, D.D.
Bishop of Albany, New York
RENEWAL OF COMMITMENT TO SERVICE
[The Assisting Deacon introduces the Renewal of the Commitment to Service. The Bishop then invites all present to re- new their commitments according to their baptismal vocation, and/or their vocation as a deacon or priest, and/or their responsibilities as Episcopal Vicars.]
All the Baptized
[The Assisting Deacon invites all the baptized to stand. The Bishop addresses all the baptized.]
V. ...And so, I ask the baptized: are you willing to renew your commitment to be disciples of Jesus Christ and to be united with Him in mission and service to the world?
R. I am.
[The Bishop confirms and blesses the commitment of the baptized, after which all are seated.]
The Order of Deacon
[The Assisting Deacon invites all the ordained deacons to stand. The Bishop addresses all the deacons.]
V. ...Are you resolved now to re-dedicate yourselves to the works of charity and service, to the ministry as heralds of the Gospel and as ministers in the liturgical assembly?
R. I am.
[The Bishop confirms and blesses the commitment of the deacons, after which the deacons are seated.]
The Order of Presbyter
[The Assisting Deacon invites all the ordained priests to stand. The Bishop addresses all the priests.]
V. Beloved sons, on the anniversary of that day when Christ our Lord conferred His priesthood on His apostles and on us, are you resolved to renew,
in the presence of your Bishop and God’s holy people, the promises you once made?
R. I am.
V. Are you resolved to be more united with the Lord Jesus and more closely conformed to Him, denying yourselves and confirming those promises
about sacred duties towards Christ’s Church which, prompted by love of Him,
you willingly and joyfully pledged on the day of your priestly ordination?
R. I am.
V. Are you resolved to be faithful stewards of the mysteries of God, in the Holy Eucharist and the other liturgical rites
and to discharge faithfully the sacred office of teaching,
following Christ, the Head and Shepherd, not seeking any gain, but moved only by zeal for souls?
R. I am.
[The priests remain standing.]
[continued]
The Chrism Mass 2021 i 9 Episcopal Vicars
[The Assisting Deacon invites all the Episcopal Vicars to step forward. The Bishop addresses the Episcopal Vicars.]
V. My dear brothers, you have graciously responded to the Spirit’s call
and my invitation to embrace the ministry of Episcopal Vicar within our Diocese.
Are you willing to personally, prayerfully and creatively foster the New Evangelization, involving and including priests, deacons, parish life coordinators and all of our people in the Church’s mission of knowing the joy of the Gospel and spreading the Good News?
R. I am.
[The Bishop addresses all present.]
V. As for you, dearest sons and daughters, pray for your Priests, that the Lord may pour out his gifts abundantly upon them, and keep them faithful as ministers of Christ, the High Priest, so that they may lead you to Him who is the source of salvation.
R. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.
V. And pray also for me, that I may be faithful to the apostolic office entrusted to me in my lowliness and that in your midst
I may be made day by day a living and more perfect image of Christ the Priest, the Good Shepherd,
the Teacher and Servant of all.
R. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us.
V. May the Lord keep us all in His charity and lead all of us, shepherds and flock, to eternal life.
R. Amen.

Text: Traditional Spiritual; cf. Jeremiah 8:22 Music: Arr. William L. Dawson, 1899–1990
There is a balm in Gilead To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead To heal the sin-sick soul.
Some times I feel discouraged, And think my work’s in vain, But then the Holy Spirit Revives my soul again. Chorus
If you cannot sing like angels, If you can’t preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, And say, “He died for all.” Chorus ANTHEM AT THE OFFERTORY

The Chrism Mass 2021 i 15 INVITATION TO COMMUNION [Please kneel.]
V. Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.
R. Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
During the Communion procession, please follow the direction of the usher, who will invite you by pew to proceed to the Minister of Holy Communion. Spatial distancing of 6 feet must be maintained between households. Reception of Holy Communion in the hand should take place with your mask still covering your nose and mouth. Simply slide your mask below your chin to keep both hands free. Upon consumption of the host, immediately reposition your mask to cover your nose and mouth. In order to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, simply slide your mask below your chin. Upon reception of Holy Communion, immediately reposition your mask to cover your nose and mouth. The ministers of Holy Communion may pause the procession periodically in order to sanitize their hands.
COMMUNION ANTIPHON
Dilexísti justítiam, et odísti iniquitátem: proptérea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus.
Vererses.
Text: Antiphon, Psalm 45:8; verses, 2ab, 11, 12, 13 Music: Gregorian Missal, Mode IV
Your love is for justice; your hatred for evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you.
Vererses. ¹My heart overflows with noble words. To the king I address the song I have made. ²Listen, O daughter; pay heed and give ear: forget your own people and your father’s house. ³So will the king desire your beauty. He is your lord, pay homage to him. ⁴And the daughter of Tyre shall come with gifts; the richest of the people shall seek your favor.
COMMUNION ANTHEM Verily, verily I say unto you,
except ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.
Whoso eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day (bis)
For My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed.
He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood dwelleth in Me, and I in him.
Text: John 6:53–56
Music: Thomas Tallis, ca. 1505–1585
