Newsletter of the American Academy of Counseling Psychology Spring

Jairo N Fuertes PhD ABPP Valentina Stoycheva M A Editors

Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies Adelphi University Garden City NY

WELCOME Dear Colleagues:

It is a pleasure to send you our Spring volume of the Academy's newsletter. Earlier this year the academy leadership discussed the possibility of re-launching the newsletter, and we agreed that it would be beneficial to have it once again as a voice for the academy. We also think that it can be an effective mechanism with which to send/share announcements and celebrate our impressive individual and collective accomplishments. Please keep it in mind, and send us any news, announcements, or information that you would like us to include in the next volume, which will come out in November 2012. Please do not be shy and send your picture as well. Thank you! Jairo N Fuertes and Valentina Stoycheva,

President s Welcome

                                        Jack O’Regan, PhD, ABPP

Welcome to the newsletter for the American Academy of Counseling Psychology. As a Board Certified Counseling Psychologist, you are automatically eligible for membership as a fellow in the academy. All that is needed is your application for membership and dues. Our job as leaders of the academy is to give you value for your membership. This newsletter is the start of that effort. Please consider contributing or sending us information for the newsletter. We would love to hear from you.

The academy is looking for ways to increase communication with its members and to increase the value of your membership in the academy. As you have already learned, the academy also set up a distribution list. We will use that list sparingly to avoid flooding your inbox. Periodically, you will receive important notices from the academy, such as a call for nomination of officers and board members.

Please let the academy officers and board members know how we can best serve you. Thank you for being a Fellow of the Academy.

Jack O’Regan

President, American Academy of Counseling Psychology

The American Academy of Counseling Psychology Awards

W James Coss Award for Extraordinary Contributions

to the Professional Practice of Counseling Psychology

Cal Stoltenberg, PhD

Dr. Cal Stoltenberg is richly deserving of this award, as he was a ground

breaker in the area of training and supervision, and the science of clinical supervision. In many ways, he and several other early pioneers created the field of supervision, thus influencing the professional lives of hundreds of psychologists. Dr. Stoltenberg’s interests are mainly in the areas of counselor supervision and training, the counseling process, marriage and family issues, and outcome research—especially from a social psychological perspective. He is currently a Professor at the University of Oklahoma.

Of the American Academy of Counseling Psychology

Greg Keilin, PhD

Dr. Greg Keilin is currently the Training Director for the psychology internship training program at the University of Texas at Austin. He coordinates the Telephone Counseling service and oversees the development of technology in the center. He was instrumental in developing the internship match program in professional psychology for years has served the profession as the national Match and Clearinghouse

coordinator for the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). Dr. Keilin has been an advocate for practical and long-term solutions to one of the most serious problems currently in the field of professional psychology— the inequity between the limited number of internship positions available and the high number of internship applicants each year. To that end, he has written extensively and advocated in a consistent and admirable manner to address the training needs of our students, both within the APA and the Education Directorate.

Ted Stachowiak, PhD, ABPP

Every seven years the ABPP governance requires each specialty board to examine its purpose and goals, and to review in depth its examination procedures through the Periodic Comprehensive Review (PCR). On January 12 and 13, 2012, members of the American Board of Counseling Psychology (ABCoP) Janette

Madkins, PCR coordinator, Charme Davidson, Sylvia Marotta and Ted Stachowiak, met at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX to begin the PCR, which is due in 2014. The focus of this initial effort was the incorporation of the revised

foundational and functional competencies adopted by ABPP. We made substantial progress in developing an initial draft of the PCR, and developed a sequence and timeframe for completing the PCR.

On January 13, 2012, ABCoP held a teleconference board meeting. Below are some areas that the board is currently working on.

• Submission of practice samples electronically to reduce the time needed to conduct reviews and to reduce costs

• Taskforce (chaired by Jack O’Regan, Academy President) to study alternatives to practice sample videos to accommodate work settings in which taping is prohibited or detrimental to treatment of certain client/patient populations • Charme Davidson, as the featured ABCoP representative, developed a video

vignette about board certification in Counseling Psychology that will be will be uploaded to YouTube accessible through ABPP’s and AACoP/ABCoP’s website.

• Jeff Pollard is coordinating the development of the AACoP/ABCoP website. A plan was developed and implemented for ongoing review of the examination process and information for accuracy and consistency, to be published on our website.

On January 13 and 14, 2012, five candidates were examined at Texas A&M University: Dr. Roberta Nutt, Dr. Laura Palmer, Dr. Derek Bergeron, Dr. Michael

(7)

Sheel, and Dr. Gary Sipps. Congratulations to each of these for successfully

completing the examination process and becoming board certified in the specialty of Counseling Psychology. Thanks to James Deegear, Gisela Lin, Ron Lutz, Robert Carter, Charme Davidson, Sylvia Marotta, Adrienne Barna (Chair), Kristin Clemens, Jeanette Madkins, Esther Wright-Wilson, and Ted Stachowiak for serving as

examiners.

Another oral examination was held on May 5, 2012 at George Mason

University, at which Janice L LeBel, EdD, ABPP, and Evan Allen Eason, PhD, ABPP successfully completed all board certification requirements. Thanks to the following who served as examiners: Adrienne Barna (Chair); Pamela Foley, Sylvia Marotta; Mary O’Leary Wiley, Jeff Pollard, Steve Eichel, and Barbara Palombi.

ABPP’s conference this year is July 11-14, 2012, in Philadelphia. The feedback from attendees has been very positive. More information and registration is available at www.abpp.org.

Please take the time to talk to a colleague about board certification. Increasing our numbers strengthens our specialty, in addition to promoting the culture of board certification as a natural next step after licensure. Encourage graduate students and recent unlicensed graduates to register for the Early Entry Option. Information about the Early Entry Option is available at ABPP’s website.

Ted Stachowiak,

President, American Board of Counseling Psychology

Hello, everyone. It is time for elections for the American Academy of Counseling Psychology Board. We are currently seeking nominations for Secretary, Treasurer, and for 2 board members. If you would be interested in serving in any of these roles send me a message directly to [email protected]. All of these are fairly light in terms of time commitment and responsibilities. We primarily serve as the organization that advocates for Board Certification in Counseling Psychology and for Counseling Psychology in general. The Board meets once per year, Wednesday morning of the APA convention. Most other business is carried out by e-mail. Thank you!

A New Survey: Clinical Experiences in Treating OCD

This is a new survey in a series of surveys on clinical experiences in using empirically supported treatments (ESTs) in practice. If you have recently taken the survey on treating PTSD, thank you for your input. We would now appreciate it if you could take 10-15 minutes to complete our survey on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Here is the rationale for our surveys: Much in the way that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides physicians with a method for giving feedback on their experiences in using empirically supported drugs in clinical practice, the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12 of the American Psychological Association) and Division 29 (Psychotherapy) of the American Psychological Association, have created a mechanism whereby practicing therapists can report on their clinical experiences using ESTs. In essence, this collaborative initiative on Building a Two-Way Bridge Between Research and Practice has established a procedure for practicing therapists to disseminate their clinical experiences. This is not only an opportunity for clinicians to share their experiences with other therapists, but can also offer clinically based information that researchers may use to investigate ways of improving treatment.

This collaborative initiative has already completed surveys of practicing clinicians on the use of CBT to treat panic, social anxiety, and general anxiety disorder, and these findings will be published shortly. We are now conducting clinical surveys on the use of CBT to treat OCD, and would very much appreciate your input. It should take between 10 and 15 minutes to complete, which you can do online at:

OCD: https://www.psychdata.com/s.asp?SID=147366

If the link does not bring you directly to the site, you may need to use control+click, or copy and paste it in your browser.

We clearly recognize that your time is valuable, but believe that this is sorely need information that will benefit clinicians and researchers alike. Thank you.
