Visalia Rawhide (81-48) @ San Jose Giants (61-71)
RHP Ryan Weiss (1-0, 6.00) vs. RHP Casey Meisner (2-3, 4.71) Game #133 / Home Game #63 Tuesday, August 27 Excite Ballpark 7:00 PM
Tonight’s Game: The San Jose Giants return home this evening to open a three-game series against the Visalia Rawhide (Diamondbacks affiliate). Casey Meisner (2-3, 4.71 ERA) is slated to make the start on the mound.
Five Wins In A Row: The Giants enter tonight’s contest riding a five-game winning streak. San Jose has outscored the opposition by a 34-10 margin during the win streak. A victory this evening would match the Giants’ longest win streak of the season (six games, May 13-21).
Road Trip Review: San Jose posted a 5-2 record during their final road trip of the season. The Giants dropped back-to-back games in Modesto to open the trip before salvaging the series finale versus the Nuts last Thursday. San Jose then swept a four-game series at Stockton in a series that concluded last night. It marked the Giants’ first four-game road sweep of the season. San Jose finished the regular season with a 32-38 road record (14-21 first half, 18-17 second half).
Wild Card Race: The Giants (61-71) are 1 1/2 games ahead of Modesto (60-73) and 2 1/2 games in front of Stockton (58-73) in the North Division wild card race. Including tonight, San Jose has seven games remaining in the regular season (three games vs. Visalia, four games vs. Stockton). The Giants last reached the playoffs in 2016. San Jose has never missed the postseason three straight years in their team history (1988-2019).
Hawkins In The Record Book: Courtney Hawkins homered three times in Sunday’s win at Stockton to match a San Jose Giants single-game record. Hawkins finished the contest 5-for-6 with six RBI’s.
He became the fifth player in the 32-year history of the San Jose Giants to hit three home runs in a game. Adam Witter (2007), Hector Sanchez (2011), Dillon Dobson (2017) and Gio Brusa (2018) have also accomplished the feat. Hawkins’ five hits also tied a single-game team record. He’s the first Giants player this season with five hits in a game. Hawkins homered again last night against the Ports and has now gone deep four times over his last two games.
Homer Happy: The Giants hit 10 home runs during their four-game sweep of Stockton. Courtney Hawkins (4 HR), Shane Matheny (2 HR) and Heath Quinn (2 HR) had multiple homers.
Pitching Shines: The Giants pitching staff has fashioned a sparkling 1.80 ERA during their current five-game winning streak. San Jose relievers have pitched 19 innings and allowed only one run during the five-game stretch.
Trouble With The Rawhide: The Giants are only 8-17 against Visalia this season, including a 4-8 mark at Excite Ballpark. 13 of the 17 losses have come by one or two runs. San Jose has dropped six of their seven series’ versus the Rawhide this year. Their only series win came when they took two of three games at Recreation Park from July 23-25 (have lost all three series’ at Excite Ballpark).
Final Homestand: Following the current series against Visalia, the Giants host the Stockton Ports in a four-game set from Friday-Monday to conclude the 2019 regular season.
Hector Borg At The Helm: Hector Borg was named manager of the San Jose Giants on July 17 replacing Bill Hayes, who resigned four days earlier. Borg, 34, had been serving as the fundamentals coach for the Giants’ Dominican Summer League team this season prior to his appointment in San Jose. Last year, Borg was the manager for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants Short-Season affiliate). He also managed the Giants’ Arizona Rookie League team in 2017. Borg played three seasons in the San Francisco farm system from 2004-06. San Jose is 20-17 since Borg took over as manager (41-54 before). See page 6 for more info on Borg.
