enforcement attorney Craig Martin defended Charles Schwab in parallel cases related to the credit crisis. The commercial litigation practice at Morrison & Foerster receives high praise by peers, with Nancy Thomas, the co-chairperson of the firm’s financial services litigation group, serving as lead counsel for Chase Bank, in defense against multiple class actions alleging violations in the Truth in Lending Act.

Munger Tolles & Olson

Munger Tolles & Olson began in 1962 with a partnership of seven attorneys, including Berkshire Hathaway Vice-Chairman Charles Munger. Though smaller than many of its “mega-firm” competitors in California and nationwide, Munger Tolles touts its one-to-one partner-to-associate ratio as a way it offers cost-effectiveness for clients. The firm is recognized for its antitrust, commercial litigation, media and entertainment, intellectual property, and real estate practices.

Bruce Abbottregularly defends Fortune 500 companies while representing select clients as plaintiffs. General commercial litigatorBrad Brian represents General Electric, Warner Brothers, AXA, and Allstate in high-profile, high-stakes cases.

Glenn Pomerantzspecializes in intellectual property and antitrust—particularly with regard to the media and entertainment industry. He recently did a stint at the Department of Justice’s antitrust division, overseeing the pending AT&T and T-Mobile merger. The anticipated merger was later dropped. Partner Gregory Stone defended Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft in a US Federal Circuit patent infringement case regarding background search capabilities in computer programs. John Spiegel defended Warner Brothers in the high-profile termination of Charlie Sheen from “Two and a Half Men.” Ronald Olson is known by peers for his corporate litigation work in representing Yahoo! in proposed Microsoft acquisitions in 2008 and 2012. Bart Williams

has been defending Wells Fargo against allegations of racial discrimination in issuing loans, and against claims of violations of Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Federal Housing Administration standards between 2004 and 2009.

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe was founded in 1863 in San Francisco, which remains its largest office in the entire firm, not to mention the largest of its five offices in California. Orrick counts among its ranks more than 1,100 attorneys and 24 offices worldwide. Orrick’s respected antitrust, intellectual property and product liability practices draw praise from clients and peers alike.

Global intellectual property co-chairperson

Neel Chatterjee concentrates his practice on representing technology clients such as

Facebook, Microsoft, and eBay in multiple internet liability cases, often as lead counsel. Chatterjee recently represented Nvidia in two appeals stemming from International Trade Commission hearings against competitor Rambus regarding industry-standard memory controllers. Intellectual property litigator Annette Hurst represents clients in technology patent and trademark litigation, recently handling a copyright case for DISH Network against CBS, Fox, and NBC regarding the satellite provider’s “AutoHop” commercial skipping technology. Hurst is also representing MGA in its trademark case against Mattel over the Bratz doll franchise, securing a $310 million federal jury verdict on behalf of MGA. Gary Weiss practices intellectual property and trade secret practice out of Silicon Valley, representing clients such as Agilent Technologies and Applied Materials. Robert Rosenfeld is a noted antitrust litigator, with one peer joking, “Bob Rosenfeld looks a bit like a hip professor but when he opens his mouth, people understand he knows everything there is to know about antitrust.” Rosenfeld secured summary determination for Microsoft in ITC litigation against Barnes & Noble regarding patent misuse claims.

Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan

Founded in Los Angeles in 1986, four lawyers founded Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan as a firm dedicated solely to commercial litigation, and the firm has since grown to over 600 litigators practicing in 11 offices worldwide. Though founded as a business litigation firm, Quinn Emanuel has developed highly respected appellate, bankruptcy, intellectual property and securities practices, bringing the firm top praise from clients and competitors alike. “They’re growing, they’re busy, and they are really good at hiring talented young people,” notes one peer.

The firm’s co-founder and managing partner John Quinnis revered for his general

commercial and intellectual property litigation skills. He has represented clients such as General Motors and Occidental Petroleum in victories worth monetary figures worth in excess of $1 billion. Quinn is representing Samsung along with intellectual property practice co-chair Charles Verhoeven

in the Apple-Samsung patent infringement case concerning the allegations of infringement of Apple’s patents by Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphone and touch-screen tablets. This was one of the most closely watched, hotly contested patent cases of the year. Apple ultimately emerged the victor, but an appeal by Quinn lawyers is almost

certainly planned.

William Urquhart maintains a diverse commercial litigation practice, having represented Dubai royal governmental corporate authority Dubai World, Superior National Insurance, and Hughes Electronics. Urquhart is particularly experienced in handling class actions and coordinating international cases. William Price is the co-chair of the firm’s national trial practice group, noted for his jury defense verdict of Micron Technologies in a $12 billion trebled antitrust case brought by Rambus over random-access memory. James Asperger is the co-chairperson of Quinn Emanuel’s white-collar defense group, and as one peer states, “I have dealt with him on other side. Very persuasive and a good advocate.” Asperger represents both corporate clients and individuals in relation to investigations conducted by the SEC, Department of Justice, and other federal regulatory agencies. He also counsels clients on antitrust and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act matters.

Sidley Austin

Sidley Austin, founded in Chicago and merged with the New York firm Brown & Wood in 2001, is an international legal force, comprising 18 offices and 1,700 attorneys. Within California, Sidley maintains three California locations: Los Angeles, Palo Alto, and San Francisco, each with respected general commercial, intellectual property, and product liability practices.

Thomas Hanrahan is the head of the Los Angeles litigation group and co-chairperson of Sidley’s complex commercial litigation practice. Hanrahan led the highly publicized defense of Taco Bell in a class action alleging that the content of Taco Bell’s signature taco meat was not pure beef but filled with non-beef products. Hanrahan advised the company to engage in an aggressive public relations campaign supporting the integrity of its product, eventually leading the plaintiff’s counsel to dismiss the action entirely. Peter Ostroff is noted for his general commercial litigation and trade secret practice, representing clients such as Daewoo Motors in bankruptcy proceedings and defending Microsoft in allegations of interference in internet-TV competition.

Robert Rosenfeld [of Orrick

Herrington & Sutcliffe] looks a

bit like a hip professor but

when he opens his mouth,

people understand he knows

everything there is to know

about antitrust.
