Syracuse Mets Game Notes
Upcoming Schedule and Probable Pitchers
Buffalo Bisons in Trenton: This season, Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate is playing its home games in Trenton, NJ. The Blue Jays are playing in Buffalo because the border is closed to non-essential travel. With the Blue Jays playing in Buffalo, the Bisons are playing home games in Trenton. While at “home” in Trenton, Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate is playing as the Trenton Thunder. While on the road, the team is playing as the Buffalo Bisons.Pitching Leads the Way: Since allowing nine runs on Thursday night at Rochester, the Syracuse pitching staff has allowed four runs, including only two earned runs. Syracuse went 22 consecutive innings without allowing a run and 30 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Winning Formula: Since Thursday, May 28th, Syracuse leads the Triple-A East League with a 0.57 ERA and ranks second with a .299 batting average. The Mets are 3-1 since then. From the start of the season to May 27th, Syracuse ranked last out of 20 teams with a 6.97 ERA and 17th with a .224 batting average. The Mets were 5-16 to start the year, the worst record in the league.
Who’s Hot?: Drew Jackson is currently on a five-game hitting streak. In those five games since May 27th, Jackson is hitting .556 (10-for-18) with 3 RBI, 2B: 2, 3B, 6 R, 3 BB, K, and 2 SB…David Thompson is hitting .350 (14-for-40) with 8 RBIs, 3 HR, 2B: 3, 3B, 3 BB, and 4 K over his last nine games.
League Leaders: Syracuse leads the Triple-A East League with 40 stolen bases, five more than Worcester, the next closest team…The Mets lead the league defensively in double plays with 31, five more than Gwinnett and Omaha… Drew Jackson is tied for third in the league with two triples… David Thompson is tied for seventh in the league with 12 extra-base hits and 11th in the league with six doubles…Quinn Brodey ranks ninth in the league with six stolen bases…Jesús Reyes leads the league with 33.2 IP…Jerad Eickhoff ranks second with 33 IP
Mets Dig the Long Ball: Syracuse has hit 26 home runs this season, scoring 45 total runs from those homers. That accounts for 39% of Syracuse’s run production this season (115 runs).
We’re Going to Need a Bigger Base: Major League Baseball is implementing different experimental rule changes at the various levels in the minors this season. In Triple-A, bigger bases are being tested. In the Triple-A East League, where the Mets are, an 18x18 inch base will be used instead of the traditional 15x15 inch base. But this base will only be used for the first half of the season. In the second half, the league will switch back to the traditionally-sized base in order to see the
differences. The Triple-A West League will do the opposite: Starting with the 15x15 inch base and then switching to the 18x18 inch base. There will be another difference. The 18x18 inch bag used in the Triple-A East League is manufactured by Schutt. The bigger base that Triple-A West will use will be a new design that will have a reduced height of 2.5 inches tall at the center of the bag instead of the current 3 inches. That new design is being built by Boombang.
Better Get Comfy: In order to reduce travel for teams during the 2021 season, teams will only play opponents from the same division. The unique 2021 schedule also includes teams playing six straight games against the same opponent. Every Monday is an off day, and then teams will play a six-game series in the same city.
