The Fishing Competition
My name’s Leon and I’ve known my friend, Bernie, since I was eleven. We’re both fifteen now and enjoy fishing and swimming in the river together. For me, fishing’s a hobby, but it’s more than that for Bernie. He fishes in competitions, and he’s really good at it.Two months ago, Bernie asked me to join his team for a fishing competition. I decided to do it. I had six weeks to practise for the competition, which happened last week. So I went fishing when I could, usually all weekend. I help on a farm on Fridays, and I study after school Monday to Thursday for some exams I’ve got next month. Bernie showed me the places in the river that fish usually like, for example around a fallen tree. But I got my biggest fish under a bridge, and Bernie caught a big one by a broken boat.
The morning of the competition arrived, and we started fishing. Nothing
happened for two hours, but then I pulled in my first competition fish! We fished until the end of the day, but no-one caught a fish heavier than mine.
Bernie and the team were pleased with my fish and we won tenth place out of twenty-four teams. Bernie hopes to win a competition soon, but one was enough for me. I prefer to fish for fun.
Example:
0 Bernie is A older than Leon.
B the same age as Leon. C younger than Leon.
Answer: 0 A B C
21 Fishing is an activity that Leon A wants to do better. B likes doing with Bernie. C prefers to swimming.
22 When was the competition? A a week ago B six weeks ago C two months ago
23 Leon practised for the competition A at weekends. B four days a week. C on Fridays.
24 Leon caught a fish near A a fallen tree. B a broken boat. C a bridge.
25 How long were they at the competition? A two hours B just the morning C all day
26 At the competition, Bernie and Leon’s team A won. B came tenth. C were last.
27 In the future, Leon will A enter no more competitions. B enjoy competitions more. C try harder to win competitions.

Part 1
Narrator: You will hear five short conversations. You will hear each conversation twice. There is one question for each conversation. For questions 1 – 5, choose the right answer, A, B or C.
Here is an example:
Which drink is the boy going to have? Boy: Mum, can I have some milk to drink, please? Woman: We haven’t got any. How about some orange juice? Boy: I’ll just have water. Is there any in the fridge? Woman: Yes, I put a big bottle in there this morning. Narrator: The answer is B.
One. Which sport is Anna good at?
Woman: I enjoyed watching you play basketball today, Anna. You played really well!
Girl: Thanks, Aunt Sarah. It’s the sport I’m best at. But it’s a shame we lost the match! Our hockey team’s better.
Woman: Oh, you play that as well?
Girl: I’ve just joined the team, so I’m not very good yet. I’m going to learn to play tennis this summer, too. Narrator: Now listen again.
[The recording is repeated.]
Narrator: Two. What time do dad and Harry need to leave the house?
Man: Have you put everything you need in your bag, Harry? We need to leave the house in about twenty minutes.
Boy: What, so at half past four? The train doesn’t leave until quarter past five, does it?
Man: But we’ve got to pick mum up from work at quarter to five, on the way to the station.
Boy: Oh, right. Well, I’m nearly ready, anyway. Narrator: Now listen again.
[The recording is repeated.]
Narrator: Three. Where was the girl when she saw the dolphins?
Girl: I saw some dolphins when I was on holiday! Boy: Really? That’s brilliant. Was that when you were at
the beach?
Girl: They weren’t wild ones, they were at a zoo. But I’d love to go out in a boat and see some wild dolphins in the sea one day.
Boy: Yes, I would, too. Narrator: Now listen again. [The recording is repeated.]
Narrator: Four. What is happening at Art Club now? Woman: Hi, it’s Mum. Has Art Club finished yet?
Girl: Not yet, we’re still cleaning the art room. We painted a really big painting together, and we got paint all over the floor.
Woman: Oh right! Text me when you want me to collect you, then.
Girl: OK, but we’ve still got to put the paints and paper away after this, too.
Narrator: Now listen again. [The recording is repeated.]
Narrator: Five. What is on special offer on the website at the moment?
Boy: Look at this cycling website, Dad. These glasses are fantastic – they don’t break!
Man: Oh yes? But they cost far too much. Anyway, you don’t need cycling glasses – you’re looking for a jacket, aren’t you?
Boy: Yeah, look – this one has £30 off its normal price. It’s the same colour as the cycling trousers I got in the sales last week, too.
Man: That’s good. Narrator: Now listen again. [The recording is repeated.]

Woman: Angelina, why don’t you go to any clubs at school? Girl: I can’t decide which to go to, Mum. All my friends
go to different ones!
Woman: Which club does your best friend, Amanda, go to? Girl: She’s very good at chess, so that’s the club she
joined.
Woman: Right. And Sonya?
Girl: She goes to a club where they learn to play different instruments and sing – at the moment they’re practising playing for a dance show at school.
Woman: Great. Does Lucy go, too? She likes that sort of thing.
Girl: But she also loves reading. They’re discussing some short stories about science at her club this month.
Woman: Right. Is there a Film Club?
Girl: Yes. Molly went last year, but said it was a boring club. So now she goes to the science one. They’re doing a project on colour and light.
Woman: Interesting. Does Ella go to a club?
Girl: Yes, but I can’t go to her club because I don’t have a good enough camera. They had a great exhibition last week at the music club concert. Woman: Really? How about Katrina?
Girl: She’s just left Book Club, and joined the dance group instead. She wanted more exercise. Woman: Wow, all great clubs – a difficult choice! Narrator: Now listen again.
[The recording is repeated.]
Part 3
Narrator: Listen to Tom talking to his mum while they cook dinner.
For questions 11 – 15, tick A, B or C. You will hear the conversation twice.
Woman: Thanks for helping me cook dinner, Tom. Can you pass me that bottle on the shelf?
Boy: The green one?
Woman: The yellow one behind the brown one. It’s the oil. Boy: Here you are.
Woman: Now, get the vegetables out of the fridge, please. Boy: Onions and carrots?
Woman: We need onions but not carrots. And can you see the peppers?
Boy: Yes.
Woman: Two of those, as well. We’ll cut them into small pieces.
Boy: Right. Shall I turn the cooker on?
them?
Boy: Not fish again, please!
Woman: Let’s have sausages, then – we’ll have chicken tomorrow. We can roast everything together. Boy: How long will it take?
Woman: Er … we’ll cook it hot for 15 minutes, then 25 minutes at a lower temperature, so in 40 minutes it’ll be ready.
Boy: Great. I’m going on the laptop.
Woman: Actually, can you do this little bit of washing up? I’m going to make a dessert. You can go on the computer after dinner.
Boy: All right.
Narrator: Now listen again. [The recording is repeated.]
Part 4
Narrator: You will hear Ben talking to Debbie about a bike ride.
Listen and complete questions 16 – 20. You will hear the conversation twice.
Girl: So, Ben, can you come on a bike ride with me and Peter this Sunday?
Boy: Yes, I can, Debbie. Girl: Great.
Boy: Can we go to Rabbit Hill? I’ve never cycled there before.
Girl: Peter wants to go to Green Hill because it’s not so far! He doesn’t do much cycling.
Boy: Fine, it’s good there anyway. Are you going to take a picnic?
Girl: It’ll be difficult to carry one, so let’s just take some money and buy something to eat from the café. Boy: Good idea. What time shall we meet to go on the
ride?
Girl: I don’t know … eight thirty?
Boy: That’s a bit early, but if we wait until after nine o’clock, the roads will be too busy, won’t they? Girl: Exactly.
Boy: OK then. Where shall we meet?
Girl: How about in Spring Square? Do you know it? It’s at the end of Spring Street, and is quite near all of our houses.
Boy: OK. Can I have your number so I can ring you if there are any problems?
Girl: Yes, it’s 0-7-double 8-3-4-2-6-5-1. Did you get that?
Boy: Yes, thanks Debbie. Narrator: Now listen again. [The recording is repeated.]
Part 5
Narrator: You will hear a man giving a talk to his customers at a horse riding centre.
Listen and complete questions 21 – 25. You will hear the information twice.
Man: Welcome to the Riding Centre. I’m your riding teacher, and my name’s Jack. In a minute, I’ll take you to your horses, but I need to tell you a few things first. First, what you need to wear. Everyone must wear a hat, and if you need to borrow one, we’ve got lots, of all sizes. I’m afraid we don’t have any boots. We’re going to go for a ride to the river today because the beach is too busy at this time of year. Now, the horses love going in the water there, so please leave your camera here if you have one. But it might be a good idea to take a jacket! The price of the ride today is £27.50 for adults, and for young people under the age of 16 it’s £19.75. We ask our customers to pay before the ride, please. So before we go to the field to get the horses, can you come to the office, please? It’s this way … Narrator: Now listen again.
