In chapters 16 and 17, find five arguments from Mustapha Mond and John regarding humanity. For each argument, you will decide the extent you agree or disagree. In other words, you will determine whose side you are on in each separate argument made for each topic. Many of the topics are related. You must pick five. These five topics will make up the five body paragraphs of your essay. Once you re-read 16 and 17, determine five arguments you will address in your essay. Locate the exact section of the book where the argument occurs. You will need to reference the book exactly. This is an essay that first explores the arguments contained in the book and then allows you to argue for or against those arguments. Today, I will expect you to locate the five arguments by page number and begin summarizing the arguments made by either Mustapha Mond or John.

Some of the topics covered:

 High art versus mindless art

 Actual happiness versus “overcompensation for misery.”  Stability versus instability

 The optimum population versus a world full of Alphas  Science, truth, and art as menaces to society

 The sacrifice of truth and beauty for the sake of stability  The irrelevance of God and religion in modern life

 Humans as happy if vices are easily obtained versus Humans are degraded by their vices

 Natural “instinct” toward belief versus belief as “conditioning.”  Self-denial and capitalism/consumerism

 Happiness versus a life of suffering
