RESEARCH ACTITIVIES. WORK IN PROGRESS

Corpora of the representation of speech in Caribbean Literature (English and Spanish).

I have been working on this project which informs my PhD dissertation. Caribbean Short stories in English and Spanish have been analysed for instances of variation (phonetic, orthotypographical, lexical, grammatical, etc). I have developed a coding system for the types of variation found and have coded all instances of variation in the texts. The coded material can be loaded into a language software programme (WordSmith or, preferably, SIL Language Explorer) for statistical and other related types of analysis. These corpora can be used individually or can be used for comparative studies and translation. More texts and text types need to be added to generate a more complete view of the subject. 20 new stories were added during this academic year.
