Make Hull
your first choice
A degree from Hull comes with the stamp of authenticity associated with
a long-established university, but is earned in a cutting-edge environment
that embraces technology, social connectivity and a global outlook.
We know that making your university choice is a life-shaping decision. At the University of Hull, we believe that we have the perfect combination of heritage and high technology, in an inspiring and nurturing arena, to help you truly flourish.
The University’s long and distinguished history began in 1927, as a college of the University of London. In 1954, the University was granted independence through a Royal Charter, becoming the 14th-oldest university in England.
From this foundation rooted in heritage, the University has grown into an inspiring, future-focused home of academic excellence.
Free high-speed WiFi turns our entire campus into a virtual classroom, giving you the freedom to enjoy green leafy areas or bookable AV seminar rooms when not in our state-of-the-art labs and workshops or on our professional-quality performance stages.
With one eye on your life after graduation from the moment you arrive, employability modules and key skills are woven into the fabric of our curriculum to ensure that you emerge as a distinctive career-ready Hull graduate.
Our single-site campus contains everything you need, from study and sport to shopping and socialising, within easy walking distance – and it’s our students who make it come alive. Whether full-time or part-time; from any one of more than 100 countries; aged 18 or 80-plus; they are at the heart of everything we do.
The newly-refurbished Brynmor Jones Library is world-class, combining printed materials and rare books with an unprecedented level of digital connectivity.
In fact, everywhere you look on campus, you will see signs of continuing progress among the ivy-draped buildings: new accommodation suites, extended medical research laboratories and redesigned theatre facilities. Our aim is to build on our proud yesterdays with the technological promise of tomorrow to help our students realise their brightest hopes.
Book your place on one of our Open Days to see how we could shape your future.
Teaching here is led by globally significant researchers, bringing their
knowledge and real-life experience into your learning. Our research entwines
with industry, making connections and generating real-world solutions.

Research and
enterprise
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) more than 60% of our research was ranked as “internationally excellent” or “world leading”.
The University’s research changes the world we live in. We have developed state-of-the-art cancer treatments and diagnostic devices; we predict the impact of tidal flood surges and long-term climate change; and our Wilberforce Institute for Slavery and Emancipation is mapping out and exposing the shocking reality of modern slavery through projects such as the world-renowned Global Slavery Index.
Our research ambition is matched by our impressive facilities: In addition to our experimental spaces and computer labs, the Allam Building focusses on advances in cardiovascular disorders and cancers, and we also have a research station at The Deep, which houses a Total Environment Simulator that can recreate a range of conditions from tidal flows to river channels on Mars. Computer scientists in the unique Hull Immersive Visualization Environment have created virtual-reality wind turbines – utilising the very latest 3D simulation and Oculus Rift technology to assist those working in the Humber region’s burgeoning green energy empire.
The Logistics Institute, based at Hull University Business School, has an impressive track record of collaborating with industry partners to identify real-world solutions – and in 2014, the University announced that it is investing in the creation of five new research institutes. These will comprise a maritime institute; an energy and environment institute; a Humber development institute; an institute for clinical and applied health research; and the Institute for Research on Culture and the Creative Industries to capitalise on opportunities arising from Hull being the UK City of Culture in 2017. These new centres will further enhance the University’s reputation for research and continue to attract and support exciting academics who want to ensure a better future for all of us. Bright ideas are transformed into successful businesses in our Enterprise Centre; developing a fresh breed of entrepreneur, supporting fledgling businesses, managing spin-out companies and encouraging links to influential organisations across the world.
Our research, enterprise and work regularly changes the shape of the world we live in – and our students get to experience our breakthroughs at close-hand.
Our researchers are passionate about identifying and
solving real-life problems and sharing their knowledge and
experience with our students.
70%
of our research in the 2014 REF
Geography, Environmental and
Archaeology unit of assessment
was classified “internationally
excellent” or “world leading”
and ranked in the top three in
the UK for impact.
“We have been particularly impressed by the work of the University
of Hull in the important role it played in the city’s successful bid
to become UK City of Culture in 2017 and its sense of corporate
responsibility for the cultural life of the city in which it is located.”
Hull has been named the UK City of Culture 2017 and, if you choose to study here, you will be at the heart of 365 days of world-class arts and culture.
Our campus already has a rich cultural heritage running through its red-brick architecture. Philip Larkin was the librarian here during his most prolific years as a poet, and the Brynmor Jones Library houses the University’s art collection and exhibition hall. Other creative spaces on campus include the Gulbenkian Centre and Middleton Hall, which is currently undergoing a major revamp to incorporate improved recording and rehearsal facilities.
But 2017 will bring further excitement. Some of the 1,500 events planned for the city will be hosted on campus alongside exciting yet-to-be-revealed installations, a University programme of events and developing artworks over the year.
With 25 festivals, 15 national and international commissions and 12 artist residencies in the pipeline, there will be big names to go and see – and plenty of opportunities to get involved. Expect mass-voice choirs, flashmob opportunities and collaborative pieces to appeal to even the most reserved of talents. There will also be CV-boosting openings to volunteer behind the scenes, with many work experience options available. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be part of a unique moment in history: your opportunity to put Hull – and yourself – on the map, while having a brilliant time, too!

Learning
experience
During your time at the University,
you will develop many new skills and
increase your knowledge and self-
confidence considerably. At the end
of your learning experience, you will
have developed the ability to evaluate
information critically and present it in
an effective way.
The excellent research skills you learn will allow you to locate, extract and analyse information and data from multiple sources and draw important conclusions. You will be expected to discuss, evaluate and form your own opinions about what you are learning. If you study a science subject, you will also learn through practical laboratory work.
We will ensure that you become equally skilled at working independently and as part of a team. By planning your studies, you will learn how to manage your time – an ability required in every profession. Your IT skills will inevitably improve as you progress, and if necessary there are short courses you can take to help you with this. You will also learn how to write fluently, using correct terminology and proper citation.
“I have been particularly
impressed by how Business
School courses include specialist
modules which are designed to
equip students for their future
careers.”

How do you want to study?
Undergraduate
The weighting of major/minor degrees is split in favour of the first subject, which usually accounts for 70% of your modules. These are referred to as ‘X with Y’: for example, Law with Business.
At the University of Hull, you can choose from Single, Joint or major/minor Honours degrees, most of which are completed over three full-time years.
Both Joint Honours and major/minor degrees combine two key subject areas.
In Joint Honours degrees, an equal weighting is given
to each subject; they are referred to with an ‘and’ in
the middle: for example, Business and Marketing. A Single Honours degree
focuses on modules drawn from a single subject area, with options to include a limited number of modules from a list of designated free
electives.
Single Honours
Joint Honours
Major/minor degrees
The University offers a number of full-time degree programmes which include a foundation year. These are intended for students from countries where the normal school leaving qualification does not fully meet the entry requirement for Bachelors degrees at UK universities, or for students whose subject choice at school was not appropriate for their chosen degree. Lasting for four years, these programmes provide international students with the opportunity to acquire the additional skills that they require before beginning their degree. Foundation programmes are available in many subject areas.
Foundation
Postgraduate
The MBA is an intense one-year course to enhance and develop your career in business.
There are several taught modules that are delivered through lectures, presentations and group discussions. A final dissertation or company-based project
provides you with the opportunity to conduct research into your areas
of interest within the subject area. On a research Masters
degree (MRes, MPhil), you dedicate your time to conducting
research. Your assessment is based on the quality of your
dissertation. On a Masters (MA,
MSc, LLM, Med, MBiol, MChem, MBiochem)
degree you are expected to work independently and pursue your research
interests. You will also attend lectures, seminars and will be assessed through exams, the quality of
written essays and your final dissertation.

Research Masters
MBA
Doctorate
During a Doctorate (PhD), you spend between three and four years working on a single research project. Throughout this time, you receive
guidance from your academic supervisor,
with a formal review after approximately one year. At the end of
the research project, you write and present
a thesis.
A number of courses, including Mathematics and Electronic Engineering, offer an integrated Masters qualification following an additional year of study. Many other courses contain separate options for future study, and you may be eligible for a loyalty scholarship – a special fees discount – if you choose to stay on after your first degree.
Integrated Masters
To get the edge in the employability market with quality work experience during your degree, you can find a number of courses which include a professional year in industry or structured work placements (normally sandwiched between Year 2 and your final year – hence the expression ‘sandwich course’). There are also internship and work experience opportunities available outside the regular academic year for those not on a dedicated sandwich course.
If you are looking to experience time overseas as part of your degree, you will find many courses across the University of Hull which incorporate a year abroad in Year 3. Students on other courses can also apply to spend a year or a semester overseas.
Study Abroad
Industrial placement
They offer a firm grounding for subsequent degree programmes, allowing students direct entry to a three-year Bachelors course with honours. While undertaking the foundation programme, students are fully integrated into University and campus life and are taught on site by academic staff.

If you are partway through a
university-level course in your own country and
would like to continue your studies
overseas, you may be able to top this
up to a Bachelors degree with honours
at the University of Hull.
There are many other circumstances in which you can transfer from a programme of study in your own country to complete an honours degree in fewer than three years. For example, if you have already completed the first year of a degree programme in your own country, you may be able to transfer to a comparable degree course at the University of Hull.
How to apply
Complete a UCAS application (www.ucas.com) for institution H72, or the University of Hull International Application form (if applying via an in-country
representative office: non-EU applicants only), and then send it to the University’s Admissions Service along with the following information:
• your personal details (name, date of birth, contact address, email, etc.)
• a short statement to tell us the degree programme/s that you wish to be considered for, how you think your previous studies have prepared you, and whether you hope to be able to join at Year 2 or Year 3
• a short, one-page summary of the qualifications you have gained or are still taking (including the full title of each qualification awarded, the date taken, the university or college attended and any English language qualifications)
• a copy of the final certificates for awards completed and transcripts, translated by a certified translator, showing
– the modules or subjects studied to date – the marks, grades or credit for each one – the level of each module
• a summary of modules still to be taken
• any other information, such as a school reference, that you would like to be considered

Study abroad
and exchange
The Study Abroad option allows you to explore further, pursue additional interests and develop a truly international network of friends and contacts that could last a lifetime.
At the University of Hull, we recognise the personal and professional benefits of studying abroad for our students. If you choose to study abroad, the support and assistance you require will be made available to you.
Students applying for an undergraduate
degree
While studying with us, you have the opportunity to study overseas for one semester or a full academic year, subject to being able to secure a visa to enter that country. You can choose from universities and partner institutions in Australia, Canada, Europe, Korea or the USA.
Students interested in coming to Hull for one
semester or one year
If you are already an undergraduate at a university in your own country, you can come to Hull on our Study Abroad and exchange programme for one or two semesters. If you are interested in doing this, please contact the Study Abroad coordinator at your university.
Mind-expanding studies
Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to break out of your academic routine. You can study at another leading university in a different country, learn from experts in your subject and take modules that may well not be available at Hull or your home university.
It also offers a unique opportunity to learn about yourself and the world around you through living and studying with people of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.
Career inspiration
Studying in another country can also help you to define your career interests. You might discover an interest or skill you may not otherwise have developed, which could eventually be applied in the workplace. What is certain is that studying abroad will help you to become a well-rounded individual with valuable experience and a new perspective.
Travel opportunities
Travelling in your free time and on academic breaks is one of the great benefits of studying abroad. The programme can make many destinations more accessible to you, particularly if you are studying on a different continent, as well as giving you the opportunity to explore your immediate surroundings.
For more information on our range of Study Abroad opportunities, visit: www.hull.ac.uk/studyabroad.
We offer a Study Abroad and exchange programme to our students, as well as to
students already enrolled at a university in their home country who want to come
to England for a short period.
“In some of my modules, I have
even had the chance to work on
real professional projects, which
has given me skills for my future
career.”
Penpitcha Wongtoythong (Thailand) MSc Marketing Management

www.hull.ac.uk/pgapply.
Your personal statement plays an important role – it is the only part of the form that gives you the chance to select and emphasise information about yourself in order to ‘sell yourself’.
Admissions tutors will look for evidence in your personal statement that:
• you have the right level and type of intellectual ability; you will obtain the required points or grades; and you will be able to cope with the work
• you are enthusiastic and motivated about the subject area and your studies
• you have realistic expectations of the course and experience
• you have the maturity to make a successful transition to university and adapt to different styles of teaching and learning
• you will make a contribution to the University as a community
• you will be likely to accept a place if offered;
• For students who require a Tier 4 visa, the statement is also used as evidence of your genuine commitment to study
The text and presentation of your personal statement will give admissions tutors an idea of your communication skills and ability to express yourself clearly. It should be an organised and literate presentation that will provide useful evidence of your maturity, sense of responsibility and personality.
What to include in your personal statement
Why you have chosen the course. You could saysomething about how your interest developed. If you are applying for a subject you have not studied before, give some indication that you know what the subject involves. It is important that you show a natural progression from your previous experience and studies to your proposed course. This is especially important if you are repeating a year, taking a course at the same level as one you have already taken, or progressing to a postgraduate course in a subject that is different from your undergraduate studies.
Why you have chosen to study in the UK, and in particular at the University of Hull.
Relevant and realistic career aspirations.
Writing a
personal
statement
Your current studies: what you enjoy about them and in what way they have prepared you for higher education.
Details of the key skills you have developed through your studies and other activities: communication skills, problem-solving, team-working, and
improving your own learning and performance are all valuable skills in higher education.
Any employment, work experience or voluntary work, especially if this is relevant to your chosen course. This is particularly important for subjects associated with careers, such as teaching, physiotherapy, law, medicine and social work.
Your social, sporting or other interests and activities: use these experiences and interests positively as they
can highlight the skills and qualities the admissions tutors are looking for. For instance, being in a team can help to demonstrate your commitment and team-working skills (or leadership skills if you are a coach or captain), whereas a part-time job shows that you are able to manage your time and balance work with your social life.
If you are applying for an undergraduate degree, you will have to write a personal
statement as part of the application process. for postgraduate programmes,
we recommend that you write a personal statement to support your application.
