If there’s a formula
for designing casino
ads and lottery
graphics, how would
that apply to drug
packaging?
Pharmaceutical packaging and labeling is regulated by Health Canada in Canada and the FDA in the USA. Because both agencies (and the manufacturers) come from a science background, the labeling and marketing of these products tends to the logos side. The gaming industry, in contrast, is largely unregulated. Casinos typically use pathos to appeal to customers’ emotional sides.
It is well known that both industries generate products that have risk, particularly with individuals who have addictive personalities. In this assignment you will design a box label for a new pharmaceutical product, “Butane
Honey Oil.” You will research the typical
visual elements of current pharmaceutical packaging: typefaces, colours, and graphic tropes and other schemes that visually say “pharmaceutical drug”. You will research the typical elements of gaming visual
communication: the typefaces, colours and graphic tropes in casino ads, lottery graphics, video lottery terminals, casino iinteriors and Nevada gambling culture, and you will compare and contrast the two visual styles in your
Process Book.
Your label design for the box will NOT use the standard pharmaceutical graphic design; it will incorporate “casino style” visuals. The design that you produce should speak to the consumer that this is a fun and exciting new drug, full of thrills, spills and surprises!
Although your design will fly in the face of Health Canada labeling standards, you will be given copy, a box design and certain other requirements for inclusion in your assignment. The specification files are available for
download in the “Specifications” box on the class website at http://guides.nscad.ca/content. php?pid=119420&sid=1028840.
Process
1. Research the typical visual elements of current pharmaceutical packaging.
2. Research the typical elements of gaming visual communication.
3. Do a comparison and contrast analysis and save it in your Process Book.
4. Download the Box Template and the Packaging Copy files.
5. Develop your design, first by hand, then using Illustrator CS5.
6. Print your design and cut it out using glossy photo paper. (if glossy photo paper is not available to you, print it on card stock in the Design Printshop)
7. Take a few product shots of your work with your digital camera, and post them on Picasa.
8. Make a JPEG of your flat design and, along with your research, design
development and product shots, add them to your Process Book.
Assessment
You will be assessed on • your research (20%)• your comparison/contrast (20%) • your final design (40%)
• box-making skills and product shots (20%) This assignment is worth 12% of the final course grade.
This project is due on Tuesday November 30.
