Blashill, 44, is in his third season as the head coach of the Red Wings. Blashill has accumulated six seasons with the organization, spending the 2011-12 seasonas an assistant coach for Detroit before serving as head coach of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins from 2012-15. He led the Griffins to the most successful three-year run in franchise history, capped off with a Calder Cup championship in 2013. Blashill is the 27th head coach in franchise history. Prior to joining the organization, Blashill led Western Michigan University to its best season since 1986 (2010-11), guided the USHL's Indiana Ice to a league championship (2008-09) and spent 10 seasons as a collegiate assistant coach at Ferris State (1998- 02) and Miami University (2002-08). The Detroit native played for Ferris State as a goaltender from 1994-98. Internationally, Blashill led the U.S. at the 2017 World Championship, helping the team to the top of its group in the preliminary round with a 6-1 record.
