The Future of Nursing explores how the responsibilities and roles of nurses as well as education should change to help in meeting the increasing demand for care. The United States aims to transform its healthcare system to be in a position of providing the American population with affordable, seamless and quality healthcare services which are accessible to everyone considering the high rate of the aging population and hence the demand for healthcare also is increasing. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee was appointed to help in
doubling the number of nurses with a doctorate and building of an infrastructure for the analysis and collection of inter-professional health care workforce data.
Importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” Report
The IOM Future of Nursing is of great significance to the nursing practice. This is because one of the messages that the committee formulated aimed at enabling the nurses to be in a position of practicing to the full extent of their education. This is of great significance for the nurses as it will help them play their role and responsibility of providing care to the American population fully without experiencing any form of barriers that could be imposed by the different state laws. Elimination of these barriers will also be of great benefit to the nursing practice since the nurses will be in a better position of advocating for the transformation for the different health practices so that they can be in line with their level of knowledge and skills such as the use of
evidence-based practices. The IOM Future of Nursing report would help transform the nursing
practice through the elimination of the barriers that exist within the health care system since
more nurses will be available to provide care to the American population and also reduce the
turnover rate of the nurses. This will in turn help improve the quality of care as the nurse-patient
ratio will be impacted on positively. The IOM will also be of benefit to the nursing practice since
the committee recommended for the expansion of nurses opportunities. This will be of great
significance to the nursing practice as it will assist the nurses in taking up different leadership
Nursing Education
Another importance of the IOM “Future of Nursing” is on nursing education. The
committee advocated for a change of the nursing education which would enable the nurses to
provide the patients with quality and safe health care services which are patient-centered. An
education system that promotes seamless academic progression would help advance the
knowledge and skills of the nurses before as well as after they receive their licenses. The IOM
report will also impact the nursing education since by advocating for a change in the education
system will help ensure that the curriculum is updated to ensure that the nurses get the right
competencies. The report will also help transform the nursing education as the nurses will be in
a position to engage in life-long learning which will help advance their level of knowledge and
skills (O’Rourke, 2014).
Nursing Workforce Development
The future of nursing committee recommended for an infrastructure that would help in
the better collection and analysis of workforce data in the health care sector. This would help the
healthcare system that require improvement and ensuring that the measures are undertaken. The
future of nursing report will also be of great importance since by advocating for effective data
collection, and analysis method health organizations will be able to project the requirements of
the nursing workforce depending on their region, skill mix, demographics and role which will in
turn help in the development of the nursing workforce (Altman, Butler, & Shern, 2016).
State-Based Action Coalitions
The state-based action coalitions are mainly formed to help in advancing the Future of
Nursing: Campaign for Action. They assist in determining research needs, capturing best
practices, tracking of lessons learned and identifying replicable models that can help in the
overall improvement of the healthcare system. There are different roles that the action-based
coalitions play. Some of these roles include the setting of goals that are defined clearly and are in
alignment with the recommendations of the IOM report, ensuring decision-makers and
policymakers are educated, seeking financial support from potential funders, and working
The state-based action coalitions are helping advance goals of the Future of Nursing:
Campaign for Action by reaching out to funders who can assist in providing the necessary
resources that are needed such as financial support. This is of great importance towards the
achievement of the goals of the Future of Nursing as the funds can be used to sponsor more
nurses to advance their level of education which will help achieve the goal of increasing the
number of nurses with baccalaureate and doctorate. Educating the policymakers and
decision-makers in the health care system is also a way of advancing goals of the Future of Nursing since
it will help the decision makers on the importance of the different messages put forward by the
committee of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation such as enabling the nurses to perform as per
their level of education by eliminating some of the practicing barriers that exist (Altman, Butler,
& Shern, 2016).
The State of North Carolina
One of the initiatives spearheaded by our states action coalition is restructuring and
expanding to reach more out to more nurses and partners. This initiative helps in advancing the
nursing profession since it will help increase the number of nurses available to provide
positively. Another initiative of our states action coalition is increasing the number of nurses
with a baccalaureate degree whereby so far the state has recorded a 4% increase. This is of great
significance in advancing the nursing profession since it will help in increasing the knowledge
and skills of the nurses which will help them be in a better position of providing quality care to
the patients and also enable them be in a better position of engaging in evidence-based practice
which in turn result in better health outcomes (Johnson, 2014). Some of the barriers to
advancement that currently exist in our state include lack of the necessary resources especially
finance and lack of support from different stakeholders. The nursing advocates can overcome
these barriers by seeking for help from potential donors and funders and also educating different
stakeholders on the importance of the different initiatives spearheaded by the states action
coalition and how they help in advancing the health system and ensuring that the patients are
