Our art school heritage - Kingston
School of Art was founded in the 1890s and is the founding institution of the University.

•The Faculty is ranked amongst the highest in the UK for
art and design in the Guardian’s 2015 league table
•The Design School is named 14th worldwide in
the recent Red Dot design rankings as one of the most
innovative schools across the USA & Europe
•The Fashion dept. was named as fifth best in the world

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Tomorrow’s designers need to be able to think critically and act
practically; they are required to be contextually insightful & creative and therefore well placed to meet new challenges in a strategic, ambitious and perhaps entrepreneurial manner.
The School is concerned with creative rigour in the context of
Design education, practice, research and enterprise. It is a critically
engaged community of Design
practitioners, educators, researchers and entrepreneurs. It is a school which is discipline focused and in which making is central to its practice.

Industry contacts are extensive and there is much engagement with
professional practice and the outside world through live industry projects

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Priority is given to individual artistic practice,
the making of work, and the understanding of this within the context of contemporary art.
There is also an emphasis on
exhibiting work both individually and collectively.
OUR TEACHING
You will be taught by specialists whose collective experience offers a broad teaching platform and a range of practical and conceptual inputs.
OUR RESEARCH
Research in the School aims to provide an intellectual and creative milieu for innovation in contemporary fine art.
OUR FACILITIES
We have retained the traditional facilities and craft focus from our art school
heritage – and we still make things at Kingston!
However we recognize the importance of new technologies and so the focus is that of joining the traditional with the cutting edge.
To support this focus we have invested
£12 million
over the last 5 years and now have some of the best facilities in the UK:
•Industry-standard filming studio for Moving Image
•Extensive 3D Workshop: ranging from traditional to
cutting-edge technology
•Fashion workshops including digital knitting machines
•Professional-level Photography
Workshop in both digital and analogue

Founded and supported by the Stanley Picker Trust and KU. Recently re-launched.
A University gallery managed by the Faculty One of a handful of London arts
organisations to receive Arts Council England funding in the latest funding programme.
• Stanley Picker fellow and former School of Fine Art Reader Elizabeth Price wins 2012 Turner Prize
• Roberto Feo, and Kingston alumna Rosario Hurtado, the duo behind El Ultimo Grito, the first Stanley Picker Design Fellows, were awarded the prestigious London Design Medal (2012).

Based at Dorich House Museum, the Modern Interiors Research Centre provides a dynamic focus for interdisciplinary research on the design of the modern interior.
