This is what our program `Global Innovation Management´
is about. To attract and bring together ambitious students
from all continents, to acquaint them with the latest skills
in the field of Innovation Management, and to foster an
open-minded, creative, and globally oriented way of

The MSc. in Global Innovation Management (GIM) is a unique 2-year programme offered jointly by the Department of Design Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) at the University of Strathclyde (Scotland), the Centre for Industrial Production at Aalborg University (Denmark), the Institute of Technology and Innovation Management at Hamburg University of Technology (Germany) and the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship (AGSE) at Swinburne University of Technology (Australia), which enables graduates of first de-grees in engineering, science and technology to successfully manage the innovation process across international boundaries.
Students study at two different Universities, and the programme’s delivery over two years provides a great depth of learning, industrial engagement and a rich cultural experience. The MSc award is made jointly by the University of Strathclyde and the second year institution. Designed for people with a background in engineering, science or technology, the Master in Global Innovation Management was developed with industry focus. This twenty-four month professional degree is for individuals pursuing management careers in innovation-focused or technology-focused organisations.

ArtnerunIversItIesThe four universities are members of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), a network to share and build on the success of its members as entrepreneurial institu-tions. All have academic strengths in engineering; all are young and innovative; and all have close ties to industry and to the regions in which they are situated. The partner universities are committed to the development and implementation of new forms ot teaching, training and research. They assure a progressive culture within their walls and sustain and nurture internationally-minded staff and students. The ECIU designed GIM for excellent students who are ready to meet this challenge.

The course’s aim is to equip students with skills to transform research outputs into innovative products and services with an emphasis on learning the tools and techniques for working globally. Students are able to apply this knowledge practically by working on projects with industry contacts in different countries, further enhancing their understanding of interna-tional business. GIM addresses new challenges in innovative global enterprise addressing the following objectives:
• A practical and global perspective of Innovation Management, through industry based modules.
• Skills applicable for larger multinational organisations to smaller enterprises.
• Expanded perspectives of Innovation Management including Technology Management, R&D, and Product/Service Development with focus on the interface between disciplines involved in the process.
• Increased research capability focused on activities at the periphery of the innovation process.

The Practice of Innovation Management Semester 3 (Year 2) at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) looks at early and late phases of the innovation management process. It concentrates on market research for (radical) innovation, cross functional cooperation at the front end of the innova-tion process, managing innovainnova-tion projects over geographical and functional/divi-sional boarders and preparing the market introduction of new products and services. In semester 4 students undertake a thesis project. Core subjects include:

Industrial Internship
In semester 3 (Year 2) at Aalborg University, students undertake an industrial internship at a Danish company to gain relevant global innovation management work experience, and to consolidate the taught content de-livered at the University of Strathclyde. Each internship will be designated to best reflect student’s interests within the available placements from a secured list of Danish companies. In semester 4 students under-take a thesis project.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation In semester 3 (Year 2) at Swinburne Univer-sity of Technology, students develop skills in entrepreneurship and innovation, and the practice of innovation leadership. The learn-ing goals and objectives are based around assessing new ventures and opportunities, planning and managing rapid growth, integrating interdisciplinary approaches and applying innovating solutions. Interactive modules are delivered by academics who are also practitioners in the relevant areas. In semester 4 students undertake a thesis project. Core subjects include:

The full 2-year programme fee for students originating from outside of the European Union is 22,000 Euros (2010 fee level, subject to review for the 2011 programme).
The full 2-year programme fee for students originating from countries within the European Union is 6,000 Euros (2010 fee level, subject to review for the 2011 programme).
Please note that all programme fees are paid to the University of Strathclyde in pounds ster-ling. The pound sterling amount may vary slightly in line with exchange rate fluctuation.
There are a number of competitively awarded ERASMUS MUNDUS scholarships (approx. 17) available to applicants from Non EU countries and for applicants from within the European Union, a European Economic Area / European Free Trade Association (EEA/EFTA) or an acces-sion state (candidate for EU membership).
The scholarships are 48,000 Euros in total for Non EU students and up to 21,000 Euros for students native to an EU country or having carried out their main activities within the EU for 12 months or more in the last 5 years. Scholarships can be used to contribute to tuition fees and provide a significant contribution to living expenses on a monthly basis over the 2 year length of the programme

Applications should be made to the administrating institution, the University of Strathclyde. A separate application to ERASMUS MUNDUS is NOT necessary.
Applicants are reminded that they should not apply for any more than 3 Erasmus Mundus courses at the same time. Applying to more than 3 programmes will invalidate all scholarship applications.
Applications are done online through the University of Strathclyde (See programme’s web-site). Applicants should upload all of the following documents to the application system as instructed within the form:
• A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, at second-class level or higher, in an engineering, sci-ence or technology subject
• An appropriate level of competence in the English language, through attaining IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 232/95
• Appendix / cover Sheet to the application (can be downloaded from the pro-gramme’s website)
• Covering letter (max. 1 page) and summary CV (max. 2 pages) outlining why you should be considered for the course, and why you should be chosen to spend year 2 at a particular partner university;
• Two scanned letters of reference
• A copy of the first degree certificate, including confirmation of the level of award (GPA, if award level not stated on certificate)
• A scanned copy of an English Language Proficiency certificate (see Entry Require-ments)
• A photocopy of your passport

Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) The energetic and innovative Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) delivers broad-based education and research aligned to the needs of innovative global industry. Relevance, stu-dent care, quality, and multidisciplinary team working are key themes in the way the depart-ment operates. The Departdepart-ment is concerned with ‘what to make’ and ‘how to make it’, and its research interests involve product and process technologies, information technolo-gies, design methodolotechnolo-gies, telepresence and organisational modelling.
Institute of Technology and Innovation Management
The Institute of Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) focuses primarily on the management of technology and innovation, and particularly the practical management of the innovation process. The Institute’s research is directly focused on innovation processes and new technologies, with the aim of identi-fying and analysing strategic, organisational and methodological issues having significant impact on the success of new product devel-opment.

Centre for Industrial Production The central focus of the Centre for Indus-trial Production (CIP) is on linking theory to method, with a special interest in the interplay between product development, manufac-turing and distribution networks in a global context. The Centre’s research is organised into four distinct areas: Product Development in Networks, Supply Chain Management, Strategic Manufacturing Development and Organisational Design and Change.
Australian Graduate School of Entrepre-neurship (AGSE)
The Australian Graduate School of Entrepre-neurship (AGSE) is SUT’s Faculty of Business and Enterprise’s graduate school. It is Aus-tralia’s only graduate school dedicated to the development of entrepreneurs. Practical theory is combined with experiential learning to develop entrepreneurial leaders and inno-vative thinkers who are practical and compe-tent and have the requisite knowledge and the skills to succeed in an often turbulent and challenging environment. Research interests include most aspects of entrepreneurship, but have expanded with the development of the new faculty and include areas such as change management, international business and lan-guages, strategic and entrepreneurial market-ing, management and financial accounting.

“After getting my Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and Automation from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China in 2003, I have been worked for 5 years in the R&D department of two leading engineering companies. At Bosch, I realized the importance of management and business education and international experience in my career development in a global organization. Therefore, I began to looking for opportunities to further my education abroad. It was a very exciting experience for me to find a course like GIM. The curriculum design is just what I expected, and studying in two European countries means I would have much more intensive exposure to different cultures. In addition, with the possibility to get spon-sor from European Union with Erasmus Mundus scholarship, I was sure the study experience would be much more beneficial without wasting time on getting money from doing simple part-time jobs.
The fact comes out that I’ve made one of the most important decisions in my life. During my study in GIM, I touched almost every aspect of the entire business process. This really broad-ened my vision and helped me to think “out of the box”.
Not only was the study very interesting and useful, but also personal life was very enjoy-able. Since I stayed in UK and Germany which speak totally different language, I needed to improve my language skills in both English and German. For me, to learn a new language is good chance to learn a new culture. And with the language skills built, I was actively involved in the local activities which open my eyes to the different lifestyle people are follow-ing. Therefore, I become much more open minded regarding to different customs, cultures and religions.
The two year study in GIM study is very valuable experience to me, with the new language skills gained and the improved understanding of people with different backgrounds and from different areas, I become more capable to do business in a global environment. With re-gard to innovation, it is no longer just a fancy word in my mind, but a practical and touchable tool which I can use to make difference to organizations. Moreover, I strongly believe that the different things I experienced in GIM will be also a valuable part of my entire life.
Although I am still looking for a job currently, I’ve been invited for interview by several com-panies in UK, Germany and Switzerland. With the unique profile built by the GIM program, I am very confident that I will find an ideal job soon.”

I was born in Bangalore, a cosmopolitan city in the south of India. After graduating with a Bachelor’s in Technology in Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology Durgapur, I began my corporate career in the Datawarehousing and Business Intelligence Department of IBM and then worked on software research at SAP Labs. Given the rich milieu of influences which I was fortunate to experience, the European Joint Master’s in Global Inno-vation Management (GIM) seemed like a natural step in my career progression. At work, I was having difficulties, convincing my management to embrace my project idea which ultimately was not realised. Simultaneously, the GIM consortium awarded me the Erasmus Mundus scholarship which was simply ‘too prestigious an offer to refuse’. Thus, being aware of the gaps in knowledge which I had to bridge, and the opportunity that I had, I became a GIMmer. I’ve always felt that ‘innovation is the closest thing to magic that we have’. All the interesting problems of our day and age cross boundaries. Some straddle borders, some straddle disci-plines. Some require co-operation between business, government, academia and non-profit groups. So training, which helps one to cross these boundaries is a vital skill in today’s day and age. The GIM program delivered at the University of Strathclyde Glasgow and Technische Universitat Hamburg Harburg, introduces you to some of these problems and gives you the flexibility and resources to develop the skills required to tackle and overcome some of these problems. The opportunity to live in two European cities, work on industrial projects with companies in United Kingdom and Germany, share a classroom with students from 30 different nationalities, travel and experience the food and culture in Europe have all been enriching and rewarding experiences.
Personally, I consider the opportunity to work with the Indian government on innovation policy and winning the ‘Tata Crucible UK Business Quiz’ by defeating the top British universi-ties including the University of Oxford and London Business School as proud achievements during the GIM stint.
After the GIM programme, I hope to work in the sphere of business and economic devel-opment. I have thoroughly enjoyed the programme and would strongly recommend it to
