Program overview

Developing the software engineering leaders of tomorrow

Software is ubiquitous in today’s modern society. Software is

used in the product industry, including consumer electronics, industrial automation and manufacturing, as well as in the service industry, including health care, fi nance, and banking.

Engineering the complex software systems used in these industries requires an engineering approach that combines knowledge across multiple disciplines, including computer science, computer engineering, economics, and management. The Software

Engineering Master’s Program unites multiple disciplines that encompass the frameworks, tools, and analysis approaches used to create and implement complex software systems.

Given the breadth and scope of domain knowledge needed to build these systems, a new generation of software engineers is needed. The Software Engineering Master’s Program is designed in collaboration with industry to provide students with a unique blend of both theoretical and application knowledge; the program enables students to immediately contribute in an industrial setting upon entering the workforce, all the while having sound theoretical foundations. This unique blend is achieved through summer internships with participating companies, focused mentoring from academic and industry advisors, joint workshops with industry, and traditional classroom instruction.

Program highlights

- Projects conducted in close

cooperation with industry

- Summer internships at

participating companies

- Individual industrial mentoring

- Individual academic mentoring

- Workshops and coursework with

industrial participation

- Curricula developed in cooperation

with industry

- Active interaction with expert

researchers

The Software Engineering Master’s Program is structured in four tracks: - Industrial Track – focus on industrial knowledge

- Research Track – focus on research skills - International Track – focus on global exposure - General Track – combine focus from multiple tracks

(3)

Topics covered

- Software Architectures

- Global Software Development

- Software Verifi cation & Validation

- Component-based Software Development

- Embedded Real-Time and High-Integrity Systems

The tracks are designed to develop domain knowledge in specifi c

industries, to foster research skills, and to provide a general understanding of the global nature of software development. Students in the program will learn the key skills needed to engineer large software-intensive systems, including managing software projects, architecting software systems, and developing software. Students graduating from the program will be able to excel both as engineers and as managers for software development projects with global scope.

Four tracks to a successful career

The Software Engineering Master's Program provides four alternative tracks

Industrial Track Students in the industrial track work in close

cooperation with a partner company. Each student is assigned an industry mentor, who plays a signifi cant role in defi ning and supervising both project and thesis work. This track provides students with valuable insight into the inner workings of a high-technology company, and provides deep industry knowledge.

International Track Students in the international track spend

their second year of the program at another university within Europe. Students are exposed to the global nature of software development through exposure to multiple European environments. Additionally, students have the option to obtain a dual degree - a Master’s degree from each of the two universities in the program.

Research Track Students in the research track work in close cooperation with faculty and researchers on projects within the university. This track provides students with an opportunity to refi ne their research skills through interactions with

internationally recognized researchers. The student’s thesis work will be an integral part of critical research projects within the university, and will be supervised by an academic advisor. General Track Students in the general track can select elements from other tracks to create a custom program of study. For example, a student could combine all three tracks in the following way: project work could be industry-related, thesis work could be research-related, and the thesis work could be completed at another university. The exact combination of tracks is selected at the discretion of the student, in agreement with an academic advisor.
