President Kathy A. Krendl
Kathy Krendl began her duties as president of OtterbeinCollege on July 1, 2009.
From her first career as a high school English teacher, Dr. Krendl’s focus has always been on students and helping them realize their full potential. “My five siblings and I grew up on a working farm in northwest Ohio. As first-generation college students, we faced many challenges but in the end we all discovered a love of learning, a respect for scholarship, and an appreciation of diversity. Otterbein provides the potential to change lives in a similar way. I welcome this opportunity to return to an intimate learning environment and to work closely with students, faculty, and staff in achieving Otterbein’s goals and securing its future.”
She previously served Ohio University as executive vice president and provost from 2007-2009 and as provost from 2004-2007. Her responsibilities there included
oversight of academic programs, university budget planning, eleven colleges, five regional campuses, international programs, and the offices of Research and Creative Activity; Diversity, Access and Equity; and University Outreach.
As provost, Dr. Krendl oversaw a strategic planning process involving over 600 faculty, staff, and students that led to the creation and implementation of the Vision OHIO Academic plan. The plan included a series of initiatives to enhance the first-year experience for undergraduates, focus graduate and research investments, increase faculty salaries, and strengthen undergraduate and graduate research, scholarship and creative activity. Dr. Krendl also established a comprehensive faculty development center and a Women’s Center as programmatic resources to support the academic plan. Prior to her appointment as provost, Dr. Krendl served as dean of Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication from 1996 to 2004. Dr. Krendl also developed partnerships focused on health and literacy with the American Cancer Society, Verizon Corporation, and the Governor’s Office of Appalachia.
Dr. Krendl served Indiana University for 13 years as professor and chair of the Department of Telecommunications in the College of Arts and Sciences and as dean of the system-wide School of Continuing Studies with offices on all eight IU campuses.
She earned a doctorate degree at the University of Michigan, a master of arts degree at The Ohio State University and a bachelor of arts degree at Lawrence University. She is the author of more than 50 publications in the area of media and learning. Dr. Krendl and her husband, Richard Gilbert, have two children, Claire and Tom. Richard Gilbert is a lecturer in journalism and English.
Institutional Artifacts Entrusted to President Krendl
• Philip William Otterbein’s Bible. A reminder of our namesake and our sacred heritage as given to us by the United Brethren Church.
• The original key to Towers Hall. Since 1871 the one experience shared by all of Otterbein’s students, past, present, and future, is taking a class in Towers Hall.
• The Medical Sword of Dr. Thomas McFadden. Dr. McFadden led a life of service; at Otterbein he began as a volunteer before taking up teaching duties, and in the Civil War he served as both a battlefield surgeon and as commander of Camp Chase, the Confederate POW camp in Columbus.
• The Book of the Minutes of the founding of The Otterbein University of Ohio. Our history of progressive governance and organization begins with this document.
• The Mace. Commissioned by former president Lynn W. Turner to represent the educational authority of the College.
• The Flambeau. Commissioned by former president Lynn W. Turner to represent the light of learning bestowed by the College.
The School Colors – Tan and Cardinal
In 1891 Florence Cronise chaired the “Color Committee” to select school colors. The committee chose tan and cardinal, the colors of the Class of 1893. The May 1891 issue of Otterbein Aegis, the Otterbein newspaper from 1890 to 1917, announced the new colors flew marvelously during the annual field day.
In 1921 the school newspaper, the Tan & Cardinal, described Otterbein tan as a “modest and retiring tint in itself, but striking in its luminosity, recognized in the artistic world as a symbol of Light and Warmth. Cardinal, on the other hand, connotes a warm heart, a desire for truth, love of our fellows, and beauty of character.” Otterbein College: Affirming Our Past/Shaping Our Future
Academic Regalia
A commission appointed in 1959 by the American Council on Education prescribes a code for academic regalia that consists of three main parts: caps, gowns and hoods. The first part, dealing with caps, allows the mortarboard or Oxford type cap. Occasionally, the Cambridge model, a soft cap resembling a beret, is worn. Either type is correct as long as it is black and of an appropriate material, except that velvet is reserved for doctors.
The tassel worn with the cap has three variations. First, it may be black for any degree. Second, it may be in the color of the major field of learning in which the degree was granted. Third, a tassel of gold metallic may be worn by doctors and governing officials of institutions. Some schools make a ceremony of switching the tassel from the right to the left at the moment the degree is awarded as a substitute for individual hooding of candidates.
The second main part of academic regalia concerns the gown which should be all black, aside from variations in materials and fullness. The bachelor’s gown falls in straight lines from a fairly elaborate yoke. Its distinguishing characteristic is the long pointed sleeves. A master’s gown is distinguished by an arc-shaped panel on the long or short sleeve. The doctor’s gown is an elaborate costume marked by velvet panels down the front and around the neck as well as by three bars of the same materials on the bell-shaped sleeves. It is cut much fuller than the other gowns and unlike them may be ornamented in color. Both the panelling and the sleeve bars may show the area in which the degree was awarded.
The third main component of academic regalia is the hood which makes clear the level of the degree, the area in which it was given and the institution which awarded it. The size of the hood and the width of the velvet trimming shows the level of study. The more advanced the degree, the longer the hood and wider the velvet trim. The color of the trim identifies the area in which the degree was awarded. Arts, letters and humanities are represented by white; education is light blue; fine arts is brown; law is purple; music is pink; nursing is apricot; philosophy is dark blue; science is golden yellow; and theology is scarlet. The lining of a hood bears the official colors of the institution from which the degree was received, in Otterbein’s case, tan and cardinal.

Otterbein College is a private, co-educational, comprehensive liberal arts college founded in 1847 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. In appreciation of the opportunities that Otterbein College provides to both faculty and students, this podium is given through the efforts of Professor Donald Austin and current art students Emily Bonnette and Hannah Teitt.
The design of the podium was arrived at through a process of creating an aesthetic representation of the College as it enters a new era of leadership, program and curricular offerings. The design is also a visual representation of the outstanding preparation Otterbein offers its students who will enter the marketplace and society as productive contributors. The podium incorporates both contemporary and traditional design elements and is constructed from cherry and maple hardwoods—native trees to Ohio.
