Gain a network from
Shanghai and Vancouver
As a UBC IMBA student, you will study part time for 20 months in Shanghai, including four weeks (two separate two-week trips) in Vancouver, Canada. You have the opportunity to build your network from your classmates in Shanghai, as well as classmates from the Vancouver MBA program.
Learn on the weekend.
Apply your knowledge during the week.
You’re an expert in your field, but you may not have had the opportunity to fully learn how an entire organization comes together. This curriculum is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the broader picture of business, so you can immediately add value to your organization and your clients. The program gives you insight into every aspect of business, so what you learn on the weekends can easily be applied the following week in your job.Add Value
to Your Career
Regardless of what industry you work in, an understanding of the different business functions and how they work together, is extremely valuable. At graduation, you will not only be an expert at your job, but you’ll also be trained to think about business on a holistic level.
The curriculum
The program begins with eight foundation modules: Organizational Behaviour
Strategy
The curriculum provides an essential foundation in advanced business and management techniques, and our courses enable you to showcase your analytical and problem-solving skills through active learning. When you come to class, you will be expected to be prepared, contribute, defend your opinions, and support others.
As the program progresses, you’ll find yourself thinking more and more like a top-level manager and making critical decisions that can affect the success of a company.
Here are some examples of projects where you’ll put those skills to the test:
Business Strategy Integration
Business Strategy Integration is a key component in the first year of the program. The goal of this course is to develop your skills in managerial decision-making across disciplines, perspectives and cultures. Integrated case days, presentations to clients and business case coursework are key components to achieving this goal.
Accounting Marketing Operations Finance Statistics Managerial Economics
Capstone
A highlight of the IMBA program, Capstone is taken in conjunction with our MBA students in Vancouver. It is an exhilarating two-day event where you will use your skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program and apply them to case studies and presentations.
“ While I was researching the next steps to advance my career, I found everything I wanted in the UBC IMBA. I was attracted to the program design, which
emphasizes professional and network development. My peers were very strong and ambitious, and having close access to high-quality professors with the right knowledge and experience was the extra edge I needed to succeed.”
Patrick Ye IMBA Class of 2014 General Manager
Just like in any organization, you will work alongside people from all backgrounds. Since the structure of our classes emphasizes collaboration, you could be participating in a variety of discussions, such as marketing complexities within the retail industry, or challenges with implementing process flow in the healthcare industry.

It Works
The UBC IMBA is a 20-month, part-time program composed with a similar curriculum as the top-ranked MBA program in Vancouver. Classes take place at the SJTU campus in Shanghai, are taught entirely in English by faculty from the Sauder School of Business, and take place on weekends from May 2016 until December 2017. As part of the program, there are two 2-week Vancouver trips that are intensive full-time residential study. (Please refer to Page 6 for the program calendar.)
The UBC IMBA is challenging. Classes and exams are delivered approximately every three to four weeks through intensive weekend sessions. Combine this with additional course work outside these weekends, plus your Monday-Friday job, it is a program that requires dedication and commitment.
However, the rewards are big, and they reveal themselves throughout the program, not just after you graduate. The program teaches every aspect of business, and you can easily apply what you learn on the weekends—whether it is a presentation, brief, or budget strategy—the following week in your job.
“ The UBC IMBA provided me not only with a comprehensive
and integrated view of business, but also real skills that I was
able to immediately apply to my position, resulting in promotion
opportunities and career growth. Furthermore, it has also helped me
gain a stronger understanding of business in China.”

evaluate and forecast firm performance and engage in equity research.
“China is arguably the most interesting, most rapidly-changing economy in the world.
The IMBA class represents a broad range of experiences that, collectively, gives a wonderful
snapshot of what is happening in this fascinating country. In class, I try to get them to think about
how the broad forces that they see will impact individual companies.”

undergraduate and Executive Education programs. She has more than 25 years of C-level marketing experience at Coca-Cola, Papa

strategy, providing new insight to this outside company for both their and your growth and advancement.
“IMBA students bring to the class their “whole selves”, meaning their life and professional experiences. Your instructors will use learning activities—cases, exercises,
exams, and projects—to integrate what IMBA students have already as skills, and those recently learned, to
create new and better thinking as a business professional.”
Mahesh Nagarajan
Mahesh Nagarajan is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Operations and Logistics Division. His research is in the area of optimization and game theory, which he applies to

various healthcare agencies and hospitals in Canada and the USA, such as Dow, Mattel, Boeing, and Alipay.
In his course, Operations and Logistics, you will build on concepts of operations management, strategy, uncertainty
and risk to understand how operations integrate with various business functions and how to make intelligent
data-driven decisions. The course emphasizes real-life cases, taking examples from corporate industry leaders.
“The IMBA students come from diverse backgrounds. One interesting aspect of the IMBA class is that in China, and other parts of Asia,
