ABSTRACT:
Android is becoming very popular and reason for Android platform it requires an open source development which is probably the most feasible and a user friendly approach. This represents an approach using android SDK and google API as to develop application for intelligent mobile devices mainly GPS. This application uses the GPS function, available in most of Smart phones today, to pin point current location accurately. Driver will update the location of bus on server. The Co-ordinates of location will be sent to server, and server will send current location of bus to student which will provide additional services through notification if any changes made in route and time table of bus.
Keywords: GPS, GPS transmitter, GPS receiver, Google map.
I. INTRODUCTION
Android is becoming very popular in market for two mainstream reasons first, source code is completely free and second, android is highly suitable for expansion as the developer see fit. The core part of this project is Bus tracking system is an application of Android phones [3]. This application uses the GPS function which is available in most smart phones today, to pin point bus location fairly accurately. This application installed on student’s Smart phone, the need is to start up the app when they want to track the bus location. This application also deals with location based Services, which are used to track the current location of the bus as well as give an estimate remaining time for the tracked bus to reach its destination using the client – server technology. Also it displays the required maps with the help of GPS [9]. The need for Bus tracking and navigation has brought the emergence of GPS technology and the revolution in mapping procedures has brought GIS technology to the everyday life of common people. In this project, "Android application for college bus tracking" we tracking the location of the bus using GPS and display it on google map. Here we are using android mobiles as it contains GPS transceiver [2].
II. LITERATURE SURVEY
“Dynamic Bus Time-table Using GPS” [1] is GPS based and manual system designed to display the real-time location and time table of buses which can be useful for any public transport system. The system will required working internet connection and may or may not be GPS tracker. For these mobile phones containing android OS will be useful.
Land Vehicle Tracking Application on Android Platform [6] is done to solve the issues like accidents, traffics, vehicle theft etc. It tracks vehicles through android application using GPS to find out where a bus is using a web application which requires login of administrator. This web application intimates the administrator and people sitting in bus to come in front for their stop.
Bus Locator via SMS using Android Application [5] sends current location of the bus to the server at specific pick up point. Then the server sends SMS to registered students who are supposed to board at next pick up point. Here the mobile phone is used as a GPS receiver. This is the tedious process where the details of the students are to be maintained and updated. The server is overloaded frequently to get details of student at every stop.

79 GPS Based Vehicle Navigation System using a google map [3] mainly focuses on developing an enhancement of GPS based vehicle navigation system using google map. This project helps to locate the routes in which buses are travelling and displays the bus position in google map. The motion of the vehicle is traced continuously and the message is send to the owner of the vehicle on demand or automatically. Here both GPS and GPRS are used but the movement of the vehicle is not displayed.
Android Application for Vehicle Theft Prevention and Tracking System [7] provides the information like location, speed, distance travelled etc., can be viewed on google Map with the help of API via internet. The administrator can also forward the SMS containing the GPS coordinates to his close friends and relatives if he wishes to, so that they can track the vehicle using google earth.
An Android Application for Tracking College Bus Using Google Map[2] track the college buses of St. Peter's College of Engineering and Technology in chennai city which would give the exact location of buses with the help of Google map and help the users to plan their way to reach their college on time. This application may be greatly used by college students and staffs since Android mobiles has become common and spread everywhere.
GPS Enabled android application for bus schedule [8] this application uses the GPS function also, available in most smart phones today, to pin point users location fairly accurately. User has to select the source and destination. This application will show you the bus timings with the accurate fare as per your source and destination.
III. PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
The proposed methodology consists of three major modules such as Admin, Driver and Student. The proposed system allows the user to find exact location of the bus. The bus routes are displayed in the user interface so that students can select the bus route through which they want to travel. The position of the bus is displayed in the google map. User can easily view the bus time table. Depending on the information like distance and position displayed on google map, user can plan and start accordingly. Modules are as follows:
Admin Student Driver
A. Admin
Admin can login to its account after authentication and authorization. Admin can enter new route details and can select the routes from the list of routes corresponding to the stops can be viewed. If admin wants inform students about any changes made in bus routes and time table then notification will be sent to the student.
B. Student
Student has to enter the pass no, login id and password to login into application. To search for a bus, Student has to enter bus number in the search bar. Then map will be displayed which shows the current location of bus. He/she can also receive an alert notification from admin when any changes made regarding to the routes. When the student selects a route, corresponding stops will be fetched from the server and binded to the spinner for the student to select.
C. Driver

80 Figure 3.1: System Architecture
The system is composed of client and server interface. At client side we have an android application which runs on device attached in the bus or provided to driver. At server side we have website to store all details related to services like student details, bus details, and bus stop details. Student can track the current location of bus on google map fetch from server. Admin maintains all information on the server.
IV. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS
A. Home page of Mobile form
The following figure is of the Start Activity called as Splash Activity. When user will download this app and starts it, this activity will be displayed to the student as a homepage.
