Please remember all our deceased loved ones, especially Carole O’Neil and Eugene P. Marckini. May they rest in peace.
before his Creator. It is because God loves us that we have equality before him. For our part we must recognize this equality in all other persons and strive, therefore, to give them what is rightfully their due.
The story of the Wise Men, which we find in the Gospels, taught the early Christians the universality of God’s salvation plan. God loves the poor, the Jewish shepherd, the rich men from the East, all are his children.
How many and what other people came to see the infant, we do not know. Yet it can truly be certain that they were all graciously received. It is an interesting tradition that we retain the shepherds in the Christmas stable, even after the time of their visit is passed, while we place the Wise Men into the scene well before their time has come.
There is something in this understanding that admits our equality before God.
Like the Magi, we come offering gifts. At each Mass we give to the offertory collection, as we offer ourselves with Christ in the sacrifice on the altar. Let us be joyful that before God, our Creator, we stand as equals, redeemed in the precious Blood of Christ.
\May the Lord bless you always,
Father Albert L. Capone
THE FEAST OF EPIPHANY
The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the gifts of the Magi, three foreigners who came to adore the new-born King. One of the truths that the liturgy of the Epiphany is concerned with is the equality of all people before God, our Creator. It certainly is a truth that should concern us today. Christians in the early Church were confronted with the problem of exclusiveness. Like us, they had been taught that they were a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a special people through whom salvation was to come.
The early Christians inherited this idea from the Jewish religion from which most of the first converts came. After all, the Jewish people were the chosen ones from who would come the Savior of the World. They were the descendants of Abraham to whom the promise of redemption was given, and passed on through Isaac and Jacob and the twelve tribes that sprang from him. So it was natural for some of them to think of themselves as better than those who did not belong to their ranks. It was easy to forget that their faith was a gift from God, certainly not something they had merited. Equality of all people before God was admissible as a theory, but in practice there was a tendency among some Christians toward smugness and an attitude that their salvation was automatically assured no matter how they led their lives. In theory we, too, readily admit the equality of all people before God, but in practice we have a tendency toward exclusiveness and a complacent attitude of automatic salvation.
Yet, Scripture tells us that every nation on earth will adore the Lord. Saint Paul mentions frequently in his writing that there is no exclusiveness in God’s Kingdom.
He had no difficulty in admitting the equality of all people

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
Reading II Ephesians 3:23,56
Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other generationsas it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit:that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
The Word of the Lord.
Gospel Matthew 2:112
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,“Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.”
Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
“Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

Responsorial Psalm 72: 12, 78, 1013
R.Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
O God, with your judgment endow the king,
and with your justice, the king’s son;
He shall govern your people with justice
and your afflicted ones with judgment.
R.Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
Justice shall flower in his days,
and profound peace, till the moon be no more.
May he rule from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
R.Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts;
the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
All kings shall pay him homage,
all nations shall serve him.
R.Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,
and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.
He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor;
the lives of the poor he shall save.
R.Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
Reading I Isaiah 60:16
Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem!Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory.
Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you:
your sons come from afar and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.

THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI
The Magi are moved to give three symbolic gifts that
show some of what true faith includes.
And they are costly gifts.
Gold
is a symbol of all our possessions. In laying this gift before Jesus they and we are saying, “I acknowledge that everything I have
is yours. I put all my resources and wealth under your authority and will use them only according to your will.”
Also, Jesus is the King of Kings!
Frankincense
is the gift of worship, for in the Bible incense is a symbol of prayer and worship. In laying down this giftwe promise to pray and worship God all the days of our lives. To be in His holy house
each Sunday and render Him the praise and worship He is due. To listen to His word
and to consent to be fed the Eucharist.
To worship Him worthily by frequent confession and to praise Him at all times.
Myrrh
a strange gift for an infant. But not for Jesus, as Myrrh was used as burial ointment, and Jesus was born into this world
as a ransom - to give His life for us.
Surely this prefigures Jesus’ death but it also symbolizes our own.
In laying this gift before Jesus we are saying, my life is yours.
I want to die so that you may live your life in me.
May you increase and may I decrease.
Use me and my life as you will.
So here are gifts that are highly symbolic.
The magi manifest more than a little homage to Jesus.
They are showing forth the fruits of saving faith.
And if we can give these gifts so too are we showing forth our faith.

LORD JESUS, COME TO OUR AID
Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages
“curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your
healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus.
May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations
from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim
invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders. Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty
and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus.
May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and
grieve, defend them from illness and despair.
May they know your peace.
