From the Desk of Deacon Anthony Viola

Retreat opportuni es are popping up all over for everyone—from business execu ves to social workers, to churches, youth groups, and more. A retreat day in the corporate world might look different than a weekend at a monastery or a few hours at our Parish Center, but the concept s ll holds—it's a chance for us to step back from the dai- ly happenings of our lives.

Many of us may be speeding through complicat- ed lives, faced with challenges and choices with no

me to deal with experiences and feelings. Many of us could use a day to rest, regroup, reassess how things are going, and refocus. As someone said recently to me, “there’s no space in my life, no

‘margin’ to handle what comes up, much less process it.” Are YOU worn out by this current Pandemic Experience?

Your retreat me can be used for reflec- on, prayer, medita ng on Scripture, or just

being with God, especially si ng before Him in Ado- ra on — allowing your heart and the heart of God to engage in a dialogue. When you pour out your heart to Him, He will pour His heart into yours.

If you have never a ended a silent retreat, please consider it. Whether you are coas ng through life with no major complaints or are going through a difficult me or a major transi on in your life, it is a “great gi ” to give your spiritual life and rela onship with God the space it needs to grow and deepen.

If you are married, and more so if you have chil- dren, you might wonder how you would be able to carve out even a couple of days in your schedule.

However, even if you do have a family, the benefits of doing a silent retreat far outweigh the challenges that will arise from you leaving home for a few days or a few hours.

If this is a challenging season of life for you, then going on a retreat could make all the difference. The greatest blessing of going on a retreat will be that you will return from your retreat closer to God. And your newfound spiritual vigor will definitely flow in- to your marriage, family and everyday life.

Saint Teresa of Calcu a once said: “We need to find God, and God cannot be found in noise and rest- lessness. God is the friend of silence. See how na- ture—trees and flowers and grass—grow in silence.

See the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence. The more we receive in silent prayer, the more we can give in our acƟve life.”

Silence!

Our Parish Mission Statement

The Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Concep on and Assump on of Our Lady is a Eucharis c community: glorifying the Father, united with the Son,

led by the Holy Spirit and protected by Mary. We are called to pray, educate and serve God’s people in this life and in the hope of eternal life.

Prayer Before a Ret eat

Father, we ask for your divine presence before, during, and a er a retreat.

We ask for healing, worship, and salva on.

Supernaturally remove obstacles and distrac ons that may prevent us from receiving from you.

Open up our thoughts to the life-changing truths of your Word, and give us a new understanding

of your character and your love for us.

Touch each of us profoundly so that our lives are forever changed by your touch.

Thank you for loving us and for reaching out to us. Amen.

If you have a quesƟon about any aspect of our Catholic Church and faith, contact us and we will answer to the best of our ability.

306. “Why do we say the Church is apostolic?"

The word “apostolic” refers to ac vi es done by the apostles or their successors. The Church was founded on the Apostles, sent by Christ to “make disciples of all na-

ons...teaching them to observe all that I have com- manded you” (MaƩhew 28:19-20). The Apostles con- ferred their mission and authority on their successors with the imposi on of hands, s ll done today.

The faith of the Apostles was preserved through me via this apostolic succession. “[The Church] con nues to be taught, sanc fied, and guided by the Apostles un l Christ’s return, through their successors in pastoral office” (CCC 857).

Join Us for Mass at St. Joseph’s, Bronx ille

Next Saturday | Noon

To commemorate the Year of St. Joseph, we have de- cided to make a short pilgrimage to our daughter parish in

Bronxville: St. Joseph’s Parish. It was founded as a Mission of Im- maculate Concep on in 1905 and in 1922 became its own Parish with its center in the beau ful church that stands today. Fr. Sorgie has spoken to Fr. Peter McGeory, Pastor, and he would love to have us come and pray at the Noon Mass on November 13. Follow- ing the Mass, a short talk about St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, will be presented.

The Parish and School of Cristo Agonizante del Rosario, Old Managua, Nicaragua:

A note from Fr. O’Dowd:

“De profundis clamavi te Domine…” Out of the depths, I cry to you, Lord. A truly apt psalm prayer for the many hardships that our good people have suffered this past year in so many senses. Thank God for our faith, ever hopeful. Once again, as we ap- proach Thanksgiving, we’re reminded that giving thanks is all part of the two Great Commandments:

love of God and love of neighbor, especially the most needy.

Our kids, families, and local community here in Managua are ever grateful for the kindness you have shared with us. Our sick, abandoned, and most needy here in our barrio parish thank you from the warmth of their hearts. As pastor and principal of our churches and school, I am proud to see how much love and goodness help us from “home.”

God bless you and keep you safe!

Father Aurelian O’Dowd (Kingsbridge naƟve of 1946) Half of all our Thanksgiving collec ons and financial gi s will be shared directly with Fr. O’Dowd’s parish and ministry in Nicaragua.

A Time to Share: Thanksgiving 2021

This Thanksgiving season, we will share your generous support with two wonderful causes.

Read about both below…

Missionary Sisters of the Poor of Christ, Philippines:

Sr. Lourdes Lopez y Gomez, a member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul in Spain, arrived at the Diocese of Catarman, Philippines, in 1975 for a mission to serve the poor. In 1976, Bish- op Anghel Hobayan permi ed Sr. Lopez to found her congrega on, and on September 14, 1978, the same bishop formally accepted the newly formed community as a Diocesan Congrega on.

Their charism is to serve the poor by caring for the abandoned, provide pre-school educa-

on, prison ministry, forma on of

catechists and ser- vices to the parish.

In 1978, the

community welcomed to their convent a woman who was pregnant and abandoned by her husband.

She would become the first person cared for by the nuns. A few months later, this woman gave birth to her son. Years later, a er working for the nuns as their cook and housekeeper, she le her son in the care of the nuns to raise and educate him. This child, born among them, would become the first orphan of the congrega on.

The nuns took care of the boy and other abandoned children. The boy was raised by them un l high school and he subsequently discerned a voca on to Religious Life, ul mately entering the seminary. He would become a priest in New York in 2015, and his name is Fr. Adolfo Novio.

Half of all our Thanksgiving collec ons and financial gi s will be shared directly with the Missionary Sisters of the Poor of Christ and their con nued ministry in the Philippines.

Fr. Novio as a child, center, with the Sisters who raised him.

The Mardi Gras dinner dance will be cancelled for 2022 but will be scheduled for February 18, 2023, to coincide with the 170th anniversary of the founding of our parish. An off-site venue will be explored for this special event.

Fr. Sorgie reports that the house at 253 White Plains Road will be razed by January 15. Permis- sions are in progress, and an architect is being sought for the design of a new entrance. This project will reach its conclusion in two years.
