AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
Participation at Romkey Park dropped significantly last fall. The after school program only had 5‐6 kids attending daily. Due to these low numbers, we have decided to use the CDBG funding differently in 2018. Boys and Girls Club will be using a portion of this money to run a Play Outside Daily (P.O.D.) program at Queens, Belsly, and Stonemill. The P.O.D. is a mobile recreation unit that travels with play equipment. These 3 parks had attendance of 15‐25 kids daily in the summer of 2017, so we feel this will be our best way to service the most kids. We will try to run a Summer Park Program at Romkey, but will need a minimum of 15 kids to do so.
ART CLASSES
We offered a variety of fall and winter classes. Painting pumpkins and parent/child painting classes were the favorites. We also held our second year of the winter art camp and had 20 kids enroll. This is a 4 day camp that was offered over the holiday break. Multiple parents mentioned that it was so nice for their kids to have something to do during this time. We have a full line up of spring and summer classes.
BASKETBALL ‐ MINI
Numbers were down this year for the mini basketball age group. Last year we offered two classes and they were both full and had kids on the waitlist so this year we decided to offer three timeslots. We ended up merging two of them together to make two full classes. We’ll probably go back to just offering two classes next year.
BASKETBALL – YOUTH (3rd and 4th grade boys and girls)
Numbers for this program continue to hold steady. We run this program as totally instruction based and don’t play any formal games. Our focus is on fundamental skills and drills. Most kids that are serious about basketball play in the metro youth league with competitive games and tournaments. We cater to the kids that are just getting into the sport and want to learn in a fun environment before jumping into competition.
DISC GOLF‐FROSTIVAL
We had 36 participants this year which is our best turnout so far for this tournament. The tournament was held at Woodlawn Park. The local disc golf club runs this tournament for us and they do a nice job recruiting players from all over North Dakota and Minnesota to come participate. We will continue to keep this as one of the Moorhead’s offerings for Frostival.
FITNESS CLASSES
All fitness classes are held at the Community Life Center and offered to ages 15 and older. Certified Fitness Instructors are provided by Total Balance Physical Therapy and Fitness. This fall and winter we offered Yoga and Dance Attack. All classes are designed to challenge a variety of fitness levels. Both classes will continue through the spring and summer months.
KICKBALL‐FROSTIVAL
Six teams in two different divisions this year made for a fun tournament. This continues to be a fun Frostival event. Three of the teams in it this year have participated in it since our first Frostival in 2016. We are still waiting for a tournament where we actually have a decent amount of snow to play on.
OPEN GYMS
In the fall we offer open gym at Good Shepherd church and in the winter we are at Ellen Hopkins. It’s a good program for kids and families looking to play basketball and volleyball. It’s typically a mix of families with young kids and then middle and high school kids that come with friends.

Ideas for next year
The Iceberg Stage became THE place to be because of the snow slide on the side. Maybe we could consider building a snow playground that more intentionally makes a great place for the kids to play.
More fire pits and heaters. People wanted to be outside longer, but there were only the two fire pits. At some points, ours had a dozen people around it. We had an extra heater, so we gave it to the volunteers at the entrance. It would be good to plan for that next year and tell them to wear more layers. We also could have had more of the heating towers that we brought.
Some food or drink for sale outside would be nice for parents while their kids were running around.
Could be interesting to have a winter camping demo with gear, etc. and other things to check out outside. Just more opportunities to highlight nature and the beautiful scenery!
The ski trail there should have been groomed the day before the event. It was frightfully icy and beginners really struggled
Offer a kids sculpture event
One Enchanted Evening – February 24, 2018
Everyone enjoyed the evening. Open up to all ages including babies/toddlers. Continue $12 admission fee/person.

Celtic Festival – March 10, 2018 Attendance 3210
The event went smoothly and attendance increased since St. Patrick’s Day was the following Saturday and weather was nice. The performers, vendors and cultural organizations did a great job. Through evaluations the audience enjoyed the music, dancing, food, booths and just experiencing their Celtic heritage.
Suggestions for next year:
Admission fee for Adults
Kids Activity Passport fee increase
No programs – easel displays of performers/presentations on all levels
HHIC rental rate increase to $1,000
10% of food sales from Concordia Catering
SPORTS SAMPLER
Numbers were better this year so we were able to hold two different classes. This continues to be a popular program for really young kids. Next year we will be having classes during the weekday afternoons. Currently we’ve been offering classes on Saturday mornings. A session is 8 Saturdays in a row and it gets to be a bit much for families and staff to be there that many weekends in a row.
SWIM LESSONS
Fall Swim Lessons were held on Saturday mornings at the Moorhead High School. Overall, lessons ran very smoothly. Our Swim Instructors were excellent, kids had fun and many parents complimented the program. Spring lessons are currently in session, with maximum attendance in every level. Lessons will also be offered this summer at the Municipal Pool.
TAE KWON DO
Tae Kwon Do program has been holding pretty steady with the amount of kids participating. Master Roy and his instructors continue to do a nice job with this program.
VOLLEYBALL – 3rd ‐ 6TH GRADE CO‐ED
We added a class for 3rd and 4th graders this year and we had a great turn‐out. Our numbers for the 5th and 6th grade group has been slowly declining. More kids in that age range are playing club volleyball.
VOLLEYBALL –WOMEN’S
We will not offer women’s volleyball moving forward. We had one team that registered. The last few years we have struggled to get teams to offer a league.
WATER EXERCISE
This is a year round program we offer for ages 15 and older. During the fall and winter, classes are held two nights a week at the Moorhead High School. Aquatics Coordinator, Barb Chamberlain, leads the hour long classes and features barbells, kickboards and noodles as part of the different exercise routines. We use a punch card system so people can pick and choose the days they attend. Participants have commented on how much they appreciate this flexibility. This program will continue at the High School until May and will then start up with summer hours in June at the Municipal Pool.
