Ex-cellent ranking results, the course accreditations by the FIBAA as well as the institutional accreditation by the Ger-man Council of Science and HuGer-manities testify to the high quality of our university. HSBA is strongly infl uenced by the model of the honourable merchant, whose entrepreneurial dealings lead to success in business and who also assumes social responsibility. Consequently, HSBA summarises its actions under the motto of „Excellence – Commitment – Fairness. Our Values. Your Success.“

Profile Logistics Management
The dual study programme Logistics Management offers practically oriented Business Administration studies with a special focus on the logistics sector, combined with simulta-neous systematic in-company training. It provides not only the fundamentals of Business Administration, but also se-lected contents from the specific logistics angle, adding modules such as Supply Chain Management, Transport Planning, and Production & Warehousing Logistics. The co-operation partners are mostly logistics companies.
International components
The Logistics Management study programme is taught in English with most of the modules covering international as-pects. Students may spend one semester at one of HSBA‘s partner universities or attend a summer school. Some inter-nationally operating companies offer an internship abroad.
Start date and duration
The course starts each year on 1 October. The duration of the programme is three years. It combines theory blocks at the university (20 weeks per year on average) with practical blocks in the company (32 weeks per year on average).
Course fees and funding
The course fees for students beginning in the academic year 2014 amount to EUR 580 per month. Up-to-date information on course fees is published at www.hsba.de.
The companies generally pay most of the course fees, at least if the student remains with the company after finishing his/her degree. It is not unusual for the agreement to contain a clause that specifies that the student must stay on in the company for a certain period of time. In addition, students receive traineeship remuneration, the amount of which de-pends on the respective industry and company. Students may also apply for student loans or public funding (BAföG).

Network approach
HSBA maintains close connections with a large number of institutions in Hamburg and around the world. Our more than 220 partner companies are at the core of our strong corpo-rate network, flanked by the Association of Friends and Sup-porters of HSBA, the VEEK (Versammlung Eines Ehrbaren Kaufmanns zu Hamburg e.V., The Hounorable Society of Hamburg Merchants), the HSBA Alumni Association and our international partner universities.
Service approach
Students receive academic support from the teaching staff and support in all other issues from the management (includ-ing Programme Management, International Office). Compa-nies can discuss their questions and suggestions with the responsible academic and administrative staff.
Dual approach
HSBA’s academic approach follows the basic principle of du-ality, which combines a challenging theoretical study pro-gramme with systematic practical professional experience. Students acquire knowledge and methodological skills in the lectures and apply these in practice. Based on the experi-ences obtained at the company, the knowledge acquired is then discussed, reflected upon and continuously expanded on in the seminars. In order to ensure the consistent transfer of scientific theory to company practice, we attach a great deal of importance to the interplay of academic excellence and many years of professional experience in well-known companies when selecting our teaching staff.
Employability approach
HSBA’s study programmes are geared to the needs of prac-tice and open up excellent career opportunities. Our gradu-ates have a solid basis in business administration with an in-dustry or function-specific focus and are quickly in a position to take on responsibility in the company.
Value approach
Excellence – Commitment – Fairness: These are the over-arching values on which all activities at HSBA are based. In our mission statement, which is adhered to by all university members and our partner companies, we have agreed to observe the values of the honourable merchant. Issues con-cerning (international) business ethics and sustainability are incorporated in all study programmes as an overlapping top-ic, and form a focal point of the academic gearing.
International approach
Internationality is an essential component of a state-of-the-art study programme, pstate-of-the-articularly in Hamburg, a city that sees itself as the gateway to the world. HSBA thus attaches great importance to the international nature of the course contents, offers a wide range of modules and events in Eng-lish and encourages studying abroad.

Course structure
Logistics Management
Business Administration core content and methods
The fundamentals of business administration comprise the modules Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Eco-nomics, Human Resources, Organisation, Investment & Fi-nance and B2B Marketing. Students also acquire in-depth method skills (Mathematics, Statistics, Quantitative Meth-ods, Operations research).
Logistics core modules
Following an introduction to the questions of logistics, the second year programme covers aspects of transport plan-ning and Supply Chain Management. Alongside these spe-cific subjects, it also includes general business administra-tion contents, taking a specific logistics approach to them. They include Strategic Management, Transport Law and Tax Issues, IT, and Risk Management and Controlling. The third year adds modules which deal with Logistics as functions within the company, such as Procurement, Production, Dis-tribution and Disposal Logistics (Logistics Functions) and Warehousing Logistics. The module Special Logistics 1 – 4 provides more in-depth, broader coverage of know-how and methods. It comprises relatively short seminars (16 hours) on subjects such as Spare Parts Logistics, City Logistics, Fleet Management and Container Logistics.
General Electives
The General Electives are interdisciplinary, giving students a chance for further development of their individual know-how and skills over the three years of their studies. The range of options extends from foreign languages to social skills and IT seminars to general studies, and also includes minor options for more in-depth treatment of selected contents. Sudents also have the opportunity to participate in a study trip, at international locations or in Hamburg.
Course structure
Students acquire practical business administration know-how, specialising in logistics with industry-specific learning modules. Special attention is given to method skills. The foundations of business administration knowledge are laid in the first year of the programme, together with an introduction to logistics, plus method modules such as languages and law. As the programme progresses, there is increasing em-phasis on logistics-specific modules, and the third year con-centrates fully on logistics modules.

„What’s special about HSBA is that the students themselves can help to shape the university. There is a committee for community projects, a debating club, a trade fair team, a hockey team, a row-ing team and much more. Also, the students can independently organise events under the auspices of HSBA, such as the annual Symposium or the HSBA Finance Conference.“

“As a Logistics Management gradu-ate, I don’t have to worry about my future career opportunities. There is so much demand for young people with qualifications in this area, be-cause companies are operating glob-ally today, and need specialist logistics know-how.”

Academic benefits
At HSBA a challenging theoretical study pro-gramme is combined with systematic practical professional experience, i.e. students acquire knowledge and method-ological skills in the
lec-tures and apply these in practice. For instance, a student may attend the module Marketing 1 at HSBA in Semester 3, go back to the company to work in the Marketing depart-ment and in Semester 4 follow the module Marketing 2 to discuss his or her experiences with the application of theory at the company. Consequently, the knowledge acquired is discussed based on the experiences at the company, reflect-ed upon and continuously expandreflect-ed on in the seminars. This creates a cycle that supports the students’ theoretical un-derstanding while enhancing their motivation and interest.
The role of the company
In university education that uses the dual system, the partner companies have a key role to play. Not only are they respon-sible for the students’ training, they also pay a large portion of the course fees as well as a monthly salary.
Prospective students apply to the company and not to HSBA. Students in the dual programmes at HSBA have to sign a contract with a company for the entire 3 years. By of-fering dual bachelor’s study places, HSBA’s partner compa-nies can attract high-performing junior managers and win them for their companies from an early stage.
Employability and career prospects
More than 90% of our graduates are offered a qualified posi-tion after finishing their studies. In addiposi-tion, our alumni sur-veys show that almost all of our alumni consider their career prospects to be good or very good.
The dual system
The dual principle involves students learning at two loca-tions, namely at the university and at the company. This prin-ciple has been in use in Germany for decades, particularly as part of dual professional training, and is one of the reasons for the success of the German economy. Dual university de-grees have existed since the 1970s, with more than 60,000 students currently registered at higher education institutions using the dual system.
Organisation of the study programme at HSBA
In accordance with their dual nature, practical and theoretical blocks alternate during the three years of study. Each se-mester 1 to 5 consists of 11 weeks of theory at HSBA and 15 weeks of practical training in the company. Semester 6 runs for only 5 weeks. Holidays and vacations have to be taken during the blocks at the company. Study programmes at HSBA may start with a theory block (Track A) or a practical block (Track B). This breaks down as follows:
Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep
Semester 1/3/5 Semester 2/4/(6)
Track
A Theory at HSBA In-company training Theory at HSBA In-company training

B In-company training Theory at HSBA In-companytraining Theory at HSBA In 2014 Logistics Management will start with a practical block (Track B).
Win-win situation for students and companies
Dual courses of study provide a win-win situation for stu-dents and companies alike. The stustu-dents receive an excel-lent education and can more or less pay their own way while studying. In the best case scenario, the company they train at will offer them a permanent position after they finish their degree. The companies in turn can recruit motivated and high-performing young people at an early stage, and can train them for practice and thus secure the company’s medi-um-term need for new skilled staff and junior managers.

Recognised quality of HSBA and the programmes
As a university, HSBA has a national institutional accredita-tion from the German Council of Science and Humanities. All of HSBA’s study programmes are state-recognised and have received excellent ratings in current national rankings. The programmes are officially accredited by the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). The B.Sc. study programmes comprise 180 European Cred-its (ECTS) and correspond to a workload of 4,500 hours. This guarantees the same academic quality as a full-time course of studies at a traditional third-level institution. Additionally, more than 95% of companies rate the dual study programmes as good or very good in terms of the spe-cialist knowledge learned and the methods used, while more than 90% of students receive offers to be kept on at the company for their next professional step immediately after finishing their studies. Almost 95% of graduates are satisfied with the study programme on the whole.
Student life and involvement
The students at HSBA organise leisure activities, a Symposi-um and a Finance Conference, perform in the HSBA band, write for the HSBA magazine, represent their university at trade fairs or face sporting challenges with the hockey and rowing teams. Our International Committee looks after inter-national students. HSBA is dedicated to encouraging stu-dent life and involvement, as these initiatives are of central importance both for forming one’s personality and for devel-oping social and methodological skills.
Excellent study conditions
The bright and friendly atmosphere of our campus provides students with the best possible conditions for learning. Our small study groups facilitate productive discussions and work. All of the literature, databases and journals relevant to the courses are available in the HSBA library. Students ben-efit from a campus located in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the city hall and the Chamber of Commerce.
Studying in Germany
The positive employment prospects in Germany as an eco-nomic location means that it is attracting more and more young people who wish to get a sound education and who can also benefit from the contacts they make in Germany in their later professional life. Another factor is the affordable cost of studying in Germany.
Studying in Hamburg
As a seaport, Hamburg is an important location for logistics and foreign trade as well as a leading financial centre in Ger-many. It is also home to many advertising and multimedia agencies, media companies and cultural institutions. In addi-tion, Hamburg is synonymous with aircraft and vehicle con-struction, is an important location for the health sector and has well-developed basic industry. This mix of economic po-tential and a good quality of life makes Hamburg one of Eu-rope’s most dynamic business regions. With the Inner Alster lake in the centre of the city, countless parks and green spaces, its proximity to two oceans, a large range of diverse leisure activities and excellent shopping, Hamburg is one of the top ten city destinations in Europe and a popular place to live and study. The high quality of life is also due to the fact that Hamburg is one of the safest cities in the world.
How to apply
Logistics Management
■
■
Applicants are also invited to contact a company that has not yet cooperated with HSBA. This may be a Germany based company or a foreign one. HSBA is happy to provide support when targeting new companies, especially when it comes to foreign companies.■
■
Other offerings such as applicant coaching and business “speed-dating” help in finding a study place (dates at www.hsba.de)The application should contain all of the customary docu-ments such as a CV and certificates proving that the appli-cant fulfils the admission requirements. These documents together with the study contract are then sent to HSBA by the company.
When to start with the application? When is the application deadline ?
There is no formal application deadline, but study places at HSBA are limited. In general, if HSBA receives all application documents before 31 May the student will be accepted for study programmes starting 1 October. Please contact HSBA, if you have not been able to match this date. The most time consuming part of the application is to find a company. Due to the high demand for a dual study place at HSBA, prospec-tive students should generally start searching for a place-ment company very early (12 months in advance), especially if the applicant wants to start with a specific company.
Is it possible to work for a foreign company or abroad?
Yes, it is possible to stay in Hamburg for the theoretical blocks at HSBA and to work, e.g., in Paris or Dubai for the practical blocks of the programme. HSBA will help with ad-vice on accommodation and other relevant issues.
Special information for non EU-students
Non-EU students may have to apply for a visa. They do not need a work permit as their status will be that of a student. For more information please consult our websites.
Personal fitting
Applicants should bear in mind that studying a dual pro-gramme is very demanding and sometimes stressful com-pared to traditional forms of studying. Additionally, applicants should be ready to high-perform at the company. The pro-gramme is ambitious, but, however, HSBA‘s students prove again and again that there still is time left for leisure or for get-ting involved in one of the many student committees at HSBA.
Application procedure
Prospective students should first find a company for the in-company part of the programme. From them they will get a so called study contract. The company will send all relevant documents to HSBA. Matriculation is possible if the appli-cant fulfils our admission requirements.
Admission requirements
Applicants need:
■
■
A study contract with a company where the professional part of the course is carried out■
■
Proof of a qualification to study at a university (generallyAbitur or Fachhochschulreife or a foreign equivalent)

■
Winning the best junior managers: The companies can attract school-leavers who are especially motivated and able to perform under pressure and keep them in their companies from an early stage.■
■
Tailored student qualifications: Companies can train their upcoming managers in a practice-based manner. The com panies can influence the academic part of the programme by proposing the topics for the in-company project work, the bachelor’s thesis or the specialisation.■
■
Immediate benefit: responsible workforce in the company. HSBA students are generally high performers, very motivated and dedicated. The students are quick to take on responsibility in the company.Responsibilities of partner companies
The companies act as partners to HSBA in training the stu-dents; as such they agree to teach certain (practice-based) content in the company and to give the student a broad in-sight into the company’s structures. HSBA provides support to new partners in particular in the form of workshops, guide-lines and assistance in preparing a suitable training plan. Costs: The students receive a payment toward their living ex-penses which is generally in the region of EUR 750 per month. The companies also usually pay most of the course fees (which currently amount to EUR 580 per month), at least if the student remains with the company after finishing his or her degree. It is not unusual to include a clause that specifies that the student must stay on in the company for a certain period.
How to become a partner?
It’s easy! Companies should contact our relationship man-agement at an early stage. Afterwards we will put your offer-ings on our online marketplace. Most probably you will re-ceive very good applications before long. Additionally, our colleagues will be happy to help you if you encounter any problems.
