Before installation and before using for the first time, read the operating instructions carefully. They contain important notes on safety and the operation and care of the ap-pliance. Please read these instruc-tions carefully to prevent accidents and machine damage.
Keep these instructions in a safe place and pass them on to any fu-ture user.
This appliance is intended for domestic use only for the preparation of es-presso, cappuccino, coffee and hot water for tea and similar drinks. Any other use is not recommended by the manufacturer and could be dan-gerous. The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use of the appliance.
Technical safety
Before connecting the appliance to the electrical supply, make sure that the rating on the data plate corre-sponds to the voltage and frequency of the household electrical supply. If in doubt, consult a qualified electri-cian.
The electrical safety of this ap-pliance can only be guaranteed when continuity exists between the ap-pliance and an effective grounding sys-tem which complies with local and na-tional regulations. It is imperative that this basic safety requirement is tested by a qualified electrician.
The manufacturer cannot be held re-sponsible for the consequences of an inadequate grounding system.
The appliance must be built into cabinetry before operation to en-sure that no electrical components are accessible. Ensure that electrical power is not supplied to the appliance while installation work, repairs or main-tenance is performed.
Do not use an extension cord to connect the appliance to elec-tricity. Extension cords do not guaran-tee the required safety of the appliance (danger of overheating).
This equipment has not been de-signed for maritime use or for use in mobile installations such as aircraft or recreational vehicles. However, under certain circumstances it may be possible for an installation in these applications. Please contact the near-est Miele Dealer or the Miele Technical Service Department with specific re-quirements.
Before the appliance is connected, the steam selector must be in the off position to prevent an uncontrolled escape of steam or hot water and possible burns.
Installation work and repairs should only be performed by a trained technician to ensure safety. Re-pairs and other work by unauthorized persons could be dangerous and the manufacturer will not be held respon-sible.
The appliance is only completely isolated from the electrical supply when:
– the fuse is withdrawn

Brief description
Unlike standard coffee machines, this appliance has a container for coffee beans so that they can be freshly ground for each cup for the best flavor. First the ground coffee is moistened with hot water (pre-brewing), to de-velop the aroma. Then hot water is forced at high pressure through the ground coffee. The pre-brewing pro-cess is optional.
The used coffee grinds are automati-cally emptied into the waste unit, so there is no need to remove the grinds after each cup.
The size of cup (max. 1 cup or 250 ml) can be programmed in so that the cor-rect amount of coffee is dispensed. If the cup being used has a smaller ca-pacity than the programmed cup size, dispensing can be stopped at any time by pressing one of the coffee serving buttons.
If two cups of coffee or espresso are needed at the same time, the appropri-ate coffee portion button must be pressed twice. The machine will fill the cups in two stages, a few seconds apart.
The machine can be programmed to grind from 6 to 9g of coffee. The pro-grammed quantity will be the same for all serving sizes (espresso, coffee, large coffee). Only the amount of water will change.
The fineness to which the coffee is ground can also be programmed in. The hot water from the hot water spout is at an ideal temperature for making
The light can be turned on inde-pendently of operation.
As a safety feature, power is turned off as soon as the front of the appliance is opened. There is also a system lock to prevent children from operating the machine.
The easy to use programming allows the coffee system’s features to be cus-tomized to each household.
To fully develop and maintain the flavor of espresso, the appliance has an addi-tional feature to prewarm the system. Hot water from the hot water spout can be used to pre-warm cups.
The appliance can be programmed to switch to standby mode so it is always ready for operation but does not con-sume unnecessary electricity. This can be programmed to happen between 15 minutes and 12 hours 45 minutes after coffee was last dispensed.
To save time when preparing coffee for a number of people, pre-grind can be selected, so there is always a portion of ground coffee ready for brewing.

Setting the water hardness
For easy operation of the coffee machine, and to en-sure that the descaling indicator comes on at the ap-propriate time, it is important to program the water hardness. The water hardness indicates how much calcium is dissolved in the water. The higher the cal-cium content, the harder the water is.
The machine monitors the volume of water passing through it in conjunction with the hardness of the water. Descaling will have to be done more often for hard water.
The local water authority will be able to tell you the hardness of water in your area or you can measure the hardness yourself using the enclosed test strip: Dip the strip in your drinking water for one sec-ond, then shake off any excess water.
The result will be evident after a minute.
If the hardness level exceeds40 gr/gal (approx. 700 ppm), the water must be mixed with noncar-bonated mineral water in a proportion of 1:1, otherwise scale will develop too quickly. Never use distilled water.
Use programming option “Water hardness” to pro-gram the water hardness.
There are four programmable levels:
Level

Filling the water and coffee bean containers
Please clean the machine thoroughly before fill-ing the water container and the coffee bean con-tainer, (see the Section on Cleaning and care).
Filling the water container
The quality of the water is important in the overall quality of the coffee. The water container must be emptied, cleaned and freshly filled every day.
Hot water and other liquids could damage the machine. Replace the water daily with cold, clean drinking water.
Open the front of the machine.
Lift the water container up and pull it forward to remove.
Open the lid and fill the container with cold, clean drinking water to within about 1” (2 cm) of the top. A valve in the base of the container will ensure that no water can escape.
Close the lid and place the container in the ma-chine, pushing it straight to the back.
The container should now be sitting flat on the floor of the machine.
Filling the coffee bean container
Only put espresso or coffee beans in the con-tainer. Anything else, including ground coffee, hot cocoa, or instant coffee could damage the grinder. Only use pure coffee beans. Do not use coffee beans treated with caramel, any kind of sugar or anything else. Do not remove the coffee bean con-tainer from the appliance unless it is completely empty, otherwise coffee beans will spill out. @KLOTZ = Carefully pull the container out as far as it will go, so that the lid is fully visible. Lift the lid.Fill the container with coffee beans to within about 1” (2 cm) of the top.
Close the lid and push the container back into place.
Setting the serving sizes
The flavor of the coffee produced depends on the type of coffee, how finely the beans are ground and the quantity of water used. Espresso, coffee and tea cups vary in size. To ensure the machine uses exactly the amount of water to suit your taste and your cups, there is a choice of four different serving sizes(max. 8 oz. or 250 ml):
three serving sizes for espresso/coffee and one for tea.
The coffee serving buttons are designed for the fol-lowing types of coffee:
The espresso button a dispenses a standard size espresso to be served in a standard espresso cup. The coffee button b dispenses coffee for a stand-ard size coffee cup. It uses the same quantity of ground coffee as an espresso, but adds more water. The long coffee button c dispenses a long coffee, suitable for a large coffee cup or mug. Again, only the volume of water is increased, resulting in a milder flavor.
The volume of water dispensed by each button can be adjusted to your taste.
Have the correct size of cup available to carry out the following steps.
Coffee and espresso cups
Turn the program selector clockwise to the “On” position (with or without lighting).
The following will appear in the display window:
If the machine is cold and the rinse program has been selected, the following message will be dis-played once the water is hot:
Once the water is hot, it will automatically be ex-pelled from the coffee dispensers.
Wait until the following message appears in the dis-play window:
Place one cup under the two coffee dispensers. Coffee is always dispensed simultaneously from both spouts.
Press the coffee serving button appropriate to the size of cup until the cup is full as desired. Re-lease the coffee serving button.
The procedure is the same for the other two cof-fee serving buttons.
The volumes of water programmed in will now be dispensed every time.

Leave the cups under the spouts until the two cups have disappeared from the dis-play window. The process is now finished.
Cappuccino
To make cappuccino, a china or porcelain cup, a heat resistant pitcher, and milk are needed.
Cold, low-fat milk (1.5% fat) is best for cre-ating foam. Ideally it should be prepared in a cold, stainless steel pitcher that nar-rows towards the top.
Fill a third of the pitcher with cold milk and dis-pense a serving of espresso into a china cup. The volume of the milk in the pitcher will double or triple when foamed. If the pitcher is too full the milk could overflow when steaming and cause burns.
Direct the steam spout towards the drip tray and slowly turn the steam selector counterclockwise. Any condensed water in the spout will be ex-pelled.
As soon as steam appears from the spout, shut the steam off by turning the steam selector clock-wise, to the o position.
Position the steam spout just below the surface of the milk in the pitcher and slowly turn the steam selector counterclockwise.
Move the pitcher in circles until a thick foam ap-pears, then lower the spout deeper into the milk to heat the rest.
The milk must not be allowed to boil or the foam will collapse and a skin will form. With a little practice, you will soon achieve perfect results.
Turn the steam off by turning the steam selector clockwise to the o position.
Pull the pitcher away from the steam spout. Care-fully pour the milk into the coffee and spoon some foam onto the surface.
As a finishing touch, sprinkle a little cocoa powder over the foam.
Always clean the steam spout immediate-ly after use, as it is harder to clean once milk has dried. (See section on “Cleaning and care”.)
Hot water
When turned on, the machine will dispense hot water at any time for tea or other drinks.
Turn the program selector clockwise to the On po-sition (with or without lighting).
If the program selector is already in this position with the message “Standby. . .” shown in the dis-play window, the machine is in energy-saving mode. Press ENTER to activate use.
The following will appear in the display window:
Wait until the following appears in the display win-dow:
Place a suitable container (e.g. a tea cup) under the hot water spout.
Press the hot water button d.
Hot water will be dispensed . As soon as the con-tainer is full, press the hot water button d again.
The machine will stop automatically if a volume has been programmed in for hot water and feature “Prog. hot water” is acti-vated.

Before turning the machine off for an ex-tended period, the coffee dispensers and the brew unit must be flushed cleaned with fresh water.
Press the Rinse/pre-warm button.
The display window will read:
Press ENTER and the display will change to:
Hot, fresh water will flow through the brew unit and out of the coffee dispensers, cleaning them in the process. The display will show:
Programming the coffee grinder
A good espresso with a thick, even foam depends not only on the quality, pressure and temperature of the water and the quality of the coffee beans, but also on the quantity of beans and how finely they are ground.
The foam should have an even color with dark stripes running through it.
Grinding the coffee
To prevent machine damage, the slide control for the coffee grinder setting should be moved care-fully and in small adjustments.
There are various ways to tell whether the coffee grinder is set correctly:
– If the espresso flows too quickly into the cup, the coffee has been ground too coarsely and the pressure is not sufficient. The grinder should be adjusted to a finer setting.
– If the espresso only trickles into the cup, the beans have been ground too fine and the coffee will be bitter. The grinder should be adjusted to a coarser setting.
– If the foam is evenly colored but pale, this is also a sign that the ground coffee is too coarse. – If the foam is very dark brown on one side,
grad-uating almost to white on the other, it suggests that the ground coffee is too fine.
To adjust the grinder setting
push the upper slide control to the left (for finer grinding) or to the right (for coarser grinding). You should be able to feel the notches clearly when moving the slide control.
If the slide control will not move,
close the machine and dispense a cup of coffee. Then try to move the slide control again.
Setting the quantity
Both the flavor and the foam on the coffee depend on the quantity of ground coffee used.
6 to 9 g of coffee beans are used per cup, depend-ing on the type of coffee. The greater the quantity, the stronger the flavor will be. The quality of the foam is also affected by the quantity:
– If the foam is evenly colored but pale not enough coffee is being used.
– If the foam is very dark brown on one side, grad-uating almost to white on the other, too much cof-fee is being used.
To adjust the amount of coffee to be ground, push the lower slide control to the left (to grind less coffee) or to the right (to grind more coffee).
Cleaning and care
Danger - always allow the machine to cool be-fore cleaning. Danger of scalding.
Do not clean the appliance with a steam cleaner. Steam could penetrate electrical components and cause a short circuit.
Never use a detergent containing sand, soda, acid or chlorine as these will damage the sur-face.
The machine must be cleaned daily to prevent haz-ardous bacteria or mold gowth on used coffee grinds.
Rinse/pre-warm button
Before turning the machine off for an extended period, the coffee dispensers and the brew unit must be flushed clean with fresh water.
Press the Rinse/pre-warm button m. The display will read:
Press ENTER and the display will change.
Hot, fresh water will flow through the brew unit and out of the coffee dispensers, cleaning them in the process. The display will read:
The appliance front and interior
Clean the front and the interior of the machine with a mild solution of hot water and liquid dish soap. Dry with a cloth. Stainless steel exteriors can be polished with a stainless steel cleaner.
On the inside of the front there is a drip catch, and underneath this there is a small sponge to absorb drips. Rinse the sponge daily with clean water.
Water container
Empty the water container daily and fill with fresh, cold drinking water just before use.
Clean the water container by hand using a mild solution of hot water and liquid dish soap.
Waste unit
The waste unit should be cleaned daily to prevent bacteria and mold growth on coffee grinds. There will probably also be water in the waste unit from the rinsing process.
Grasp the waste unit and pull forward to remove.
Clean the waste unit by hand with hot, mild soapy water and dry with a cloth.
Push the unit back into the machine, positioning it over the notches.
Make sure that the container is seated cor-rectly.
It must stand firm and flat or the appliance will not work.
If the “Empty wasteunit” message appears in the display window after you have just cleaned out the unit you will need to reposition the waste unit and then press the ENTER button. Otherwise the machine will not operate.
This is a safety feature to prevent the waste unit from overflowing. The machine counts the num-ber of times coffee grinds are emptied into the waste unit and automatically prompts you to empty it after a certain count.
Brew unit
After the waste unit has been cleaned, the brew unit must also be cleaned.
The brew unit can only be removed after the waste unit has been taken out.
The brew unit must be cleaned by hand be-cause the moving parts are lubricated and the rubber seals could become brittle in a dish-washer.
Lubricate parts of the machine as necessary (ap-prox. every 500 servings) with the silicone lubri-cant supplied, to keep the machine working smoothly (see “Lubricating the brew unit”).
Grasp the brew unit by the handle and press the part marked PRESS with your thumb.
Carefully pull the brew unit out.
If the brew unit does not slide out easily, it is not correctly positioned, (see Problem solving guide).
Clean the brew unit thoroughly under hot running water without soap.
Wipe any remaining coffee off the steel filters. There is a filter inside the funnel and a second one to the left of it. The second can be removed for cleaning (see the section on “Cleaning the fil-ters”).
Dry the funnel area to prevent ground coffee from sticking to it.
Immediately after cleaning, press the part marked PRESS once.
When replacing the brew unit do not press the part marked PRESS as this will damage the rear edge of the unit.
Slide the brew unit back into the machine along the guiding runners, without pressing the part marked PRESS, until you hear it click into place.
Using the Cleaning Tablets
Warning: Please exercise caution when using the Coffee System cleaning tablets. These ta-blets can be harmful if not handled carefully.
Keep away from children and pets Do not swallow or inhale
Wash hands after handling
Depending on the fat content of the coffee used, the brew unit could become
blocked. Therefore, it should be cleaned after every 500 servings with a cleaning tablet.
Remove the brew unit and place a cleaning tablet in the funnel.
Replace the brew unit in the appliance and close the door.
Place a liter sized container under both coffee dis-pensers.
Press the m button.
Make sure the machine is turned on and has had a chance to warm up. If it is not warm, pressing the button will have no effect. The display will show:
Press the button e again to move the asterisk to the “Rinsing cycle”.
Press ENTER
The display window will show:
A small amount of water will run out of the coffee dis-pensers, then stop. This process will ocur four more times until the cleaning cycle is complete. During the last step, approximately a pint of water will be ex-pelled. The total cleaning cycle will take about 5 minutes and a message telling you it has ended will appear in the display.
Cleaning the steel filters
Wipe any remaining coffee off the steel filter in the funnel of the brew unit to keep the machine working smoothly.
The steel filter to the left of the funnel can be removed for thorough cleaning. This filter should be checked regularly to see if it needs to be cleaned.
Remove the brew unit.
Fit the Allen wrench supplied to the connection point in the brew unit, turn counterclockwise while gripping the filter firmly.
Remove the filter with the screw.
Clean the filter with hot water and dry thoroughly. Replace the filter in the brew unit and secure it by carefully turning the Allen wrench clockwise, while gently pressing down on the filter to ensure that it is engaged.
Lubricating the brew unit Remove the brew unit carefully.
When lubricating the brew unit make sure it is properly positioned. For this the funnel must be set a little higher and the socket standing vertically (see the illustration, or the prob-lem solving guide).

The metal grill can be washed in the dishwasher. The plastic should be washed by hand with a mild solution of hot water and liquid dish soap.
Open the appliance front.
Carefully remove the drip catch and wash it by hand with a mild solution of hot water and liquid dish soap.
Dry all the pieces and replace them in reverse order.
Milk foamer
The milk foamer should be washed after every use. Milk is more difficult to clean once dried.
Pull the steam spout cover downwards.
Clean the cover with a mild solution of hot water and liquid dish soap or in the dishwasher. Dry thoroughly.
Push the cover back into position on the steam spout.
Replacing the seals
The appliance has three ring seals, one in between the steam spout and the steam spout cover, and two more behind the brew unit on the outlet housing.
Descaling the machine
The machine should be descaled regularly
(depending on the hardness of the water) to ensure that it works properly. The message “Descaling” will appear in the display window when descaling becomes necessary.
To prevent damage, descaling must be done as soon as the “Descaling” message appears.
The machine can still be operated without de-scaling when this message appears, but if left damage could occur.
Only use a citric acid based descaling agent. Do not use anything else, including powder deter-gent, vinegar, or formic acid, as these could damage the machine and cause an unpleasant odor and taste.
Please follow the instructions on the descaling agent carefully and use the exact proportions recommended to avoid machine damage. Allow the machine to cool before descaling and remove the steam spout cover of the milk
foamer, as this could be damaged by the descal-ing agent.
Open the front of the machine.
Remove the water container and fill it half way with the correct solution of descaler and warm water as indicated on the descaling agent pack-age. The water temperature must not exceed 122 °F (50 °C).
Close the lid of the water container and place it in the appliance.
Close the front of the machine.
The descaling process can now be carried out using the “Descaling” program or manually.
Automatic descaling

The water temperature could be too high. The machine will remain off until the water has cooled. There could be stones among the coffee beans, in which case the machine will turn off automati-cally within 20 seconds to prevent damage. – Call the Miele Technical Service Department.
. . . coffee was not dispensed even though the water tank is full and the coffee beans were ground?
Was the coffee grinder set to the finest grind se-lection or to the maximum quantity of coffee selec-tion?
The coffee grinding is a timed process that depends on the fineness of the grind and the quantity of beans being ground. Therefore, depending on the type of beans being used, setting the fineness at minimum and quantity at maximum may not allow enough time for the process to be completed. This would result in coffee not being brewed.
Set the grinder on a coarser setting or select a smaller quantity of coffee.
. . . the espresso is dispensed too quickly. The coffee is too coarsely ground.
. . . the espresso is dispensed too slowly. The coffee is ground too fine.
Set the grinder on a coarser setting.

. . . the foam produced is not as it should be. Check that the grinder setting is not too coarse or too fine.
The coffee is stale.
The coffee blend is unsuitable. The dispensers are set too high.
Check the temperature setting of each drink op-tion.
If the temperature is too high, there will be dark pat-ches in the foam.
. . . the warm up time is getting longer, the amount of water dispensed is incorrect and the machine is not performing properly.
. . . no water comes out of the coffee dispensers. The steel filters are dirty.
Clean the steel filters.
. . . the slide control for the grinder setting will not move.
Close the front of the appliance and dispense a cup of espresso.
The slide control will now move.
. . . there is water in the waste unit.
This is not a fault. The water is left over from the cleaning process.
. . . the brew unit can not be removed.
The brew unit is not seated correctly. For this the fun-nel must be set a little higher and the socket stand-ing vertically.
If the brew unit still can not be removed, then it is not seated correctly.
Close the front of the appliance and turn the cof-fee machine on.
. . . the brew unit can not be pushed into place in the machine
The brew unit is not seated correctly. For this the fun-nel must be set a little higher and the socket stand-ing vertically.

.Glossary
Arabica is a high quality coffee bean. It is long and flat with a groove running around it. The caffeine content is ap-proximately 0.8 - 1.3%. It is strong and aromatic, but less bitter than the Ro-busta bean.
Blending is the secret of the coffee roaster. The blend determines the fla-vor and quality of the coffee and varies according to how the coffee is to be used. The only way to decide on the blend to suit your taste is trial and error. Caffè is the Italian term for a standard espresso. Its full name is caffè es-presso.
Caffè americano is a thin espresso with water added.
Caffè corretto is espresso with a dash of something stronger such as grappa, brandy or a liqueur.
Caffè freddo is iced coffee. An ex-tended version of espresso, it is served in summer with ice.
Caffè latte is a double espresso in a large cup filled with hot milk, topped with little or no foam, for people who enjoy milk.
Caffè moca consists of one third es-presso, one third hot milk and one third cocoa. Often served in a tall glass. Caffè ristretto is the strongest, most concentrated espresso. The water is reduced to 2 tablespoons (30 ml) per serving.
Caffeine - the caffeine content of es-presso is only a third or half the caf-feine found in coffee. The stronger the
Cappuccino is espresso with foamed milk. It is one third espresso, one third hot milk and one third foam. To obtain a good foam, the milk should be cold and foamed in a cold container.
Cappuccino chiaro is a “light” cappuc-cino with less espresso and more hot milk.
Cappuccino scuro is a “dark” cappu-cino with more espresso and less milk. Cappuccino senza schiuma is a cap-pucino without the foam.
Crema is the sign of the perfect cup of espresso - a fine, nut or cinnamon brown foam on the surface of the es-presso, which is only created when the pressure is sufficiently high. The crema contains the foamed oils which are rich in flavor and aroma and helps to keep the espresso warm.
Espresso, see Caffè
Espresso corto is a “short”, strong es-presso.
Espresso doppio is a double portion of normal espresso.
Espresso lungo is the longer, less con-centrated version served in a standard coffee cup.
Espresso ristretto is a double strength, bitter tasting espresso. Grinding - the success of the es-presso depends on how coarse or fine the coffee beans are ground. If the grinds are too coarse, the water flows through too quickly and does not cre-ate sufficient pressure to release the aroma. If the grinds are too fine, it hin-ders the flow of water, so the prepara-tion time is too long and the espresso will taste bitter. In a humid atmosphere the beans swell more, so they should be ground more finely.
Macchiato is espresso with a dollop of hot, foamed milk giving a dappled (macchiato) appearance.
Pressure is important as it releases the suspended particles in the coffee which give it its aroma. If the pressure is too low, the aroma can not fully de-velop. If it is too high, it releases tannin creating a bitter flavor. Pressure is also important for creating the crema. Pre-warming the cups is recom-mended to prevent the espresso from cooling too quickly.
Quantity - the quantity of ground cof-fee used for each cup can be set be-tween 6 and 9g per cup, depending on taste. Generally 6 to 7g are used for a cup of espresso, but there are no abso-lute rules.
Robusta is a cheaper coffee bean. It is round and convex with an almost straight groove. The caffeine content is around 2 to 2.5%. It is more bitter than the Arabica bean.
Roasting is very important for the fla-vor and caffeine content of espresso. Roasting releases the ethereal oils which create aroma and flavor. As roasting concentrates the flavor it burns off the caffeine, so the darker the roast, the lower the caffeine content. Lightly roasted beans have an acidic flavor, dark roasted beans taste more bitter.
Storage - coffee is best kept in the re-frigerator to preserve the aroma. Water hardness can affect the flavor of the coffee. Water harder than
700 ppm (40 gr/gal), should be mixed with an equal amount of non carbo-nated mineral water.
