GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

SOCIAL QUARTERS

PRELATE’S MESSAGE

It seems just yesterday we were looking forward to Spring and suddenly July is upon us. Named after Julius Caesar, July used to be called Quintilus, meaning fifth. The old Roman calendar had only ten months of 28 to 35 days. They just ignored the other 60 days in the winter because the earth was inactive and other reasons.

Long before Caesar, January and February had been added and then Caesar Augustus took over the sixth month. That’s why the last four months of our calendar have names that mean seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth. You can take the teacher out of the classroom but you can’t take the classroom out of the teacher.

July offers a lot of activities for our lodge – the VMA convention, Nat’s baseball trip, NASCAR camp over, entertainment.

Hope to see you on some of these adventures.

Renovation of the social quarters is progressing. I would like to thank Dan O’Connor for sanding the walls after the mud maniac had been there. Our appreciation goes also to the many volunteers who pitched in to clean up and spruce up the facilities.

The Building Committee has had its first meeting which was basically a brain-storming session for possible changes and renovations. By the time this is printed, there will have been a second meeting. The members of the committee are Dick Sarna (Chairman), Jim Moore, Rick Moore, Kim Stephens, Bob Skinner, Don O’Connor, Billy Moriarity, and Byron Bailey. If you have any questions or recommendations, please address them to the committee.

Have a good summer.

Byron Bailey Governor

Thanks to all the volunteers who have volunteered and assisted in the various projects we have been accomplishing inside and outside of the lodge. There are too many to list by name but you know who you are and I, and the members of this lodge, truly do appreciate all of your efforts. Thanks again.

The Nationals bus trip tickets are now on sale behind the bar. The tickets are $40.00 each and include the bus ride and ticket to the game. The game is against the Chicago Cubs and is on the 16 of July. The tickets will be available to non-th members starting on the 1 of July. If you don’t have yourst ticket yet, please get it before the trip is sold out. The raffle tickets are also on sale for the two season tickets the lodge has for the Pre-Redskins games against the Steelers and Patriots.

There will be a Kabob Cook Off on the 19 of July.th More information will be posted in the lounge and rules will be behind the bar if you’re interested in signing up.

The lodge will be having its second Pavilion NASCAR Party and camp out on the 11 of July. Come onth out and pitch your tent. Enjoy the evening with your fellow Moose members.

Again, thanks to all of the members who volunteer to make things happen at the lodge. If you would like to volunteer to help us out, just let me or one of the members of the Board of Officers know. We would love to have you help out.

Hope everyone has a great summer.

Billy Moriarity

Social Quarters Manager

I am pleased to once again begin my monthly message on a happy note. Congratulations go out to Billy Moriarity on the birth of his granddaughter Vienna Dona on May 21, 2009, and to H.J. and Shannon Brenner on the birth of their daughter Zoe on June 11, 2009.

Please keep the following members and their families in your thoughts and prayers while they continue to recover from recent illness and injury: Denyse Slovick is out of Fairfax Hospital and continues her recovery; Winnie Pim’s sister Louise Easter continues to courageously fight her battle with a serious illness; Jim Cooper is recovering from emergency surgery to repair a broken leg; and John Van Pary (Bundy) is recovering from recent back surgery.

Condolences go out to the family and friends of Joe and Ginny Pesek on the recent loss of Ginny’s mother Louise Posey.

Please feel free to contact me should you hear of a member or a member’s immediate family in need of support from our lodge. This will also allow me to keep the membership informed of illnesses and distress within our Moose family.

MOOSE MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to everyone because the Lodge was awarded the Bronze Level Premier Award at the International Convention. We were one of only three Lodges in the District to receive this award.

We are starting our sign up sheet for the September 25 Golf Tournament. We are expecting to have a large turnoutth so don’t wait too long and get left out.

Thanks to Jerry Campbell, Donald Bell, Cindy O’Connor, Jen Sarna, Byron Bailey, Todd Palmer, Don Truslow, Chris Sarna, and Mary Crawford for prepping and painting the Social Quarters. We have ordered new flooring and are going to put in a new ceiling so we will have a fresh new look in the bar area.

WOTM Board of Officers

Congratulations to the following Moose member for being selected as the Moose member of the month for the month of May.

Ken Grimm

I selected Ken as the Moose Member of the Month. Ken had volunteered and assisted in the landscaping project to spruce up the front of the building. He worked for two straight weeks at the lodge tearing out trees and bushes and watering new plants that were in the front of the building and up the side of the driveway into the lodge parking lot.

Ken has continued to come out to the lodge to ensure the plants were being watered and that the plants that were moved to other locations are taking. He has also assisted in numerous other projects which have improved the appearance of the lodge.

If you see Ken around the lodge, please join me in congratulating him on being selected as a Moose Member of the Month. Also, thank him for everything he does for our lodge and our members.

MOOSE HEALTH

IT’S SUMMERTIME!!! LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL BUT AVOID TICKS

Limiting exposure to ticks reduces the likelihood of infection with tick borne diseases. A common one for our area is Lyme’s Disease. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria and is transmitted by the bit of infected blacklegged ticks. Take extra precautions in May, June, and July. These months are when ticks that transmit Lyme Disease are most active.

Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a skin rash. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. It usually takes at least a 24-hour attachment time before the organisms are transmitted.

Take the following precautions:

– Avoid wooded and bushy areas with high grass and a lot of leaf litter.

– Wear light-colored clothing so you can see ticks that are crawling on your clothing.

– Tuck your pants legs into your socks and, if out for an extended time, tape where the pants and socks meet.

– Use insect repellent with 20% - 30% DEET on exposed skin clothing to prevent tick bites.

– Perform daily tick checks after being outdoors, even in your own yard. Inspect all parts of your body carefully including your armpits, scalp, and groin.

– Check children for ticks, especially in the hair.

If you do find a tick, remove it:

1. Use fine-tipped tweezers.

2. Protect your fingers with a tissue, paper towel, or latex gloves.

3. Grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible.

4. Pull upward with steady, even pressure

a. Do not twist or jerk the tick because the mouthparts may break off.

b. If this happens, remove the mouthparts with tweezers.

5 After removing the tick, thoroughly disinfect with bit site and wash your hands with soap and water.

6. Do not squeeze, crush, or puncture the body of the tick because the fluids can be infected.

7. Save the tick for identification in case you become ill.

a. Place the tick in a sealable plastic bag and put it in your freezer.

b. Write the date of the bite on a piece of paper and place it in the bag.

8. Do not use petroleum jelly or hot matches to detach ticks from skin as it may irritate the tick and cause it to release additional saliva into you.
