INTRODUCTION

The Advanced Health Management Programme (AHMP) is an internationally co-certified, intensive management development short course, tailor-made for the needs of the healthcare executives and professionals in the public or not-for-profit sector. This course has been specifically customised for health managers working in the HIV/AIDS field and is designed to take into account the time constraints of managers who work full-time. The programme is offered by the FPD in association with the Yale University, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. The programme is designed to develop the participants' strategic management capabilities by broadening their views of their roles in the HIV sector and developing key managerial competencies required to successfully manage in such an environment. INTRODUCING YALE UNIVERSITY

As one of the world's leading centers for learning, Yale aspires to attract, educate and motivate a diverse group of the most highly talented men and women in order to advance and

disseminate knowledge and to promote the scholarship, high character, values and leadership that can be directed toward sustaining and improving society.

The AHMP is a unique collaboration between FPD and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale. This international intensive management development course is the only external course currently co-certified by Yale.

INTRODUCING FOUNDATION FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The FPD was established in October 1997 by the South African Medical Association and commenced its first course in 1998. FPD is currently the largest self-funding educational provider in the health sector in South Africa. FPD's mission is to improve healthcare in Africa through education, research and capacity development.

FPD provides training to 12 000 healthcare professionals and managers every year across Southern Africa.

Since the AHMP was started in 2005, 389 managers have registered for the course. WHO SHOULD ENROLL?

All healthcare managers in the public or not-for-profit sector with a leadership role in HIV/AIDS. COURSE DESIGN

The programme is designed to give participants a holistic perspective so that they can address the complex, unstructured problems of management in a changing healthcare environment with confidence. In order to achieve this, FPD incorporates the following learning methodologies: • Modular format supported with pre-course learning materials

Each module is supported with customised workbooks that incorporate key concepts, activities, case studies, readings and “think points”.

Participants must be prepared to invest 5-7 hours of self-study per week, for the duration of the programme in order to complete the pre-course materials prior to the full-time workshops. • Full-time workshops

The AHMP is supported with 12 one-day contact sessions, run in modular study blocks every 3 months over a twelve month period.

(3)

FPD uses a variety of teaching methods to maximise active and participative learning

including industry guest speakers, case discussions, lectures, group work and presentations. • Faculty

The AHMP faculty are leading-edge and acknowledged international and national experts in their particular fields.

• Assignments

Four (4) in-depth practical work-related assignments to be tackled individually over the duration of the programme provide a powerful means of integrating learning across the different disciplines and afford the opportunity to further reinforce the application of key concepts. These assignments form the basis for evaluation of participants' successful completion of the course.
