DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME

The Agribusiness Chain is an in-depth, fun and challenging strategy trading game which is used as an instructional material in Econ 124 – Agribusiness Management. It is inspired by the concepts behind the classic board game Monopoly, Snake and Ladder, Chess and Playing Card games. Here the players may act as input supplier, crop producer, livestock raiser, food processor, distributor, transport operator, storage operator, farm worker, importer, etc. to buy or trade agribusiness products including farm inputs, crops, livestock and food products.

By performing the roles or functions of the stakeholders/participants of agribusiness commodity system and taking into considerations various economic concepts such as demand and supply, surplus and shortage, inflation, profit, loss, weather and opportunity costs, the goal is to dominate the play by acquiring agribusiness products as many and high as possible to become the richest player at the end of the game.

PLAYER COMPOSITION AND PLAYING TIME

This game can be played by 2 to 6 players. Ideally the game is played by four players. Ideally the game is played by 4 players. Set-up time ranges from 5 – 10 minutes. The playing time is about 1 – 3 hours.

OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME

The goal of the game is to become the richest player on the board at the end. This is achieved by strategically acquiring agribusiness products as many and high as possible through carrying out the roles of the stakeholders of the agribusiness system supported by luck from the dice and the cards.

GAME EQUIPMENT

The Agribusiness Chain game consists of a board, 2 dice, 4 pieces (tokens), 2 decks of playing cards, play money, a facilitator’s tray and 1 transaction pad.

Board Game. The board contains 60 spaces. These spaces house 46 agribusiness products, 4

agricultural markets, 4 auction sales, 4 agri-freeze, 3 non-agribusiness products, 2 taxes, 2 subsidies, 2 costs and 2 loans.

Tokens. These are gamepieces used by players to represent themselves as they move around

the board. Each player will get a mover to represent themselves as they move around the board.

Dice. The dice composes of two. The dice are used by the players to indicate the direction of the

token/pieces to move and land in a particular board space.

Decks of card. There are 2 decks of cards containing 75 playing cards each. One deck of cards

consists of the agribusiness stakeholders and the other deck of cards consists of money bills and special cards.

Play Money. These are faked bills intended to be used as a medium of exchange for all the

financial transactions made by players in the agribusiness chain board game.

Agribusiness Facilitator’s Tray. This is used by the Agribusiness Facilitator to keep and organize

play moneys, playing cards and other materials used in the game.

THE AGRIBUSINESS CHAIN GAMEBOARD

The board game consists of 69 spaces. Forty-six (46) of these spaces are agribusiness products which are designated with a corresponding name, market value or listed price and color type. There are 13 each of crops, livestock and food products and 7 agricultural inputs for a total of 46 agribusiness products that can be acquired by players. The non-agribusiness product spaces have a composition of 23 consisting of 4 agricultural markets, 4 auction sales, 4 agri-freeze, 3 non-agribusiness products, 2 taxes, 2 subsidies, 2 costs and 2 loans.

PLAYING CARDS COMPOSITION

There are two decks of cards. One deck of cards consists of the agribusiness stakeholders and the other deck of cards consists of money bills and special cards. Playing cards are used by players to buy or acquire agribusiness products, collect money bills, earn bonuses and incur fines.

AGRIBUSINESS STAKEHOLDER CARDS.

These are cards use by players to acquire agribusiness products, get bonuses and incur fines. The agribusiness stakeholders compose of 75 cards which include crop producer, livestock raiser, food processor, input supplier, consumer, distributor, transport operator, storage operator, wholesaler, exporter, importer, farm manager, farm worker, financial service provider and government.

MONEY CARDS.

These objects (cards) are generally accepted as payments of players to transact in the agribusiness chain board to buy or acquire agribusiness products. The money cards consist of 30 bills amounting to Ᵽ5.2 milliom with the following denominations: Ᵽ20 T, Ᵽ50 T, Ᵽ100 T, Ᵽ200 T, Ᵽ300 T, Ᵽ500 T and Ᵽ1M.

GAME PREPARATION

1. Place the board preferably on a table and put the playing cards on their allotted spaces on the board.

2. Each player chooses one token to represent him/her while traveling around the board. 3. Each player is given Ᵽ1 million divided as follows: 5 each of Ᵽ100 T bills, 2 Ᵽ200 T bills

and 2 Ᵽ50 bills.

4. Select an agribusiness facilitator who will hold all of the money and playing cards and will handle all agribusiness transactions during the game.

AGRIBUSINESS FALCILITATOR (LF)

One is designated as the Agribusiness Facilitator in every game. The Logic Facilitator assists the players as they acquire, buy and trade, acquire agribusiness products and perform decision makings in the gameboard. He receives and holds all of the playing cards once they are utilized or used by the players. He likewise facilitates all the moves and records all trading transactions and acquisitions of the players using transaction’s pad.

HOW TO PLAY?

1. Players will get a piece or token to represent themselves as they move around the board. 2. Each player starts with Ᵽ1 million amount of money on hand and 2 cards each of crop

producer, livestock raiser, food processor and 1 input supplier cards.

3. Players will roll 2 dice to know who moves first. The player who gets the highest point will go first, the second highest pointer goes next, and so on and so forth.

4. A player rolls 2 dice when it is his turn to act. The dice indicate the direction of the token or to know how many spaces they move on his turn.

5. The spaces on the board typically correspond to various agribusiness products that players can buy or acquire including crops, livestock, food products and farm inputs. The board also consist of non-agribusiness product spaces where a player consisting of agricultural market, auction sale, agricultural freeze, non-agribusiness product, loan, cost, tax and subsidy.

6. The player moves his token to that number of spaces. When he lands on an AGRIBUSINESS PRODUCT space, he has the chance to acquire this using a corresponding agribusiness stakeholder card. A player who lands on a crop product needs a crop producer card to acquire it, a livestock product needs a livestock raiser card, a food product needs a food producer card and farm inputs needs an input supplier card. 7. When the player lands on AGRICULTURAL MARKET space, he can buy crop product

within the 2nd row of the board, livestock within the 3rd row, food product within the 4th row and farm input within the 5th row.

8. When a player lands on an AUCTION SALE space, he initiates an agribusiness product’s auction. Here, the Agribusiness Facilitator will bid agribusiness product chosen by the player. All the players may bid a desired value/price for the auctioned product. Eventually, the highest bidder will acquire the product.

9. If a player lands on an AGRICULTURAL FREEZE space, he pays a fine of Ᵽ100 T and loses 1 turn.

10. If a player lands on a NON-AGRIBUSINESS PRODUCT space, the player misses to acquire an agribusiness product and cannot to do anything until his next turn.

11. If a player lands on a TAX space, he pays a fine of Ᵽ100 T (Low tax) or Ᵽ200 T (High tax). 12. If a player lands on a SUBSIDY space, he receives a cash grant of Ᵽ100 T (Low subsidy)

or Ᵽ200 T (High subsidy) from the AF.

13. If a player lands on a COST space, he incurs a fine of Ᵽ200 T (Low cost) or Ᵽ400 T (High cost).

14. If a player lands on a LOAN space, he gets a cash loan of Ᵽ200 T (Low loan) or Ᵽ400 T (High loan) from the AF.

15. If the agribusiness product landed on is already acquired or owned by another player, a player must pay the owner a corresponding rent which is Ᵽ50% of the product’s listed price.

16. A player draws one card each from two deck of cards in every turn. The first deck of cards consists of the agribusiness stakeholders cards which can be used by players to buy products. The second deck of cards contains money bills and special cards which can be used by players to collect money bills, get bonuses and incur fines when acquiring agribusiness products.

17. The AGRIBUSINESS STAKEHOLDER cards are used by each player in order to acquire agribusiness products, pay fines and get bonuses. The agribusiness stakeholders comprise of crop producer, livestock raiser, food processor, input supplier, consumer, distributor, transport operator, storage operator, wholesaler, exporter, importer, farm manager, farm worker, financial service provider and government. CROP PRODUCER card is only used to acquire crops, LIVESTOCK RAISER card for livestock, FOOD PROCESSOR card for food product and INPUT SUPPLIER card for farm inputs. DISTRIBUTOR card is used to move freely on the board horizontally and vertically to acquire agribusiness product. TARNSPORT OPERATOR card is used to move 5, 10 or 15 spaces forward and backward on the board. STORAGE OPERATOR card is used to secure or protect acquired product. WHOLESALER card is used to buy two agribusiness products in one turn. EXPOTER card is used to buy any products with 25% imposed tariff. IMPORTER card is used to pay half the amount of a product with 25% tariff. FARM MANAGER card is used to earn a salary of Ᵽ150 T or Ᵽ200 T. FARM WORKER card is used to earn a salary of Ᵽ50 T or Ᵽ100 T. FINANCIAL SERVICE PROVIDER card is used to provide loan of Ᵽ150 T or Ᵽ200 T. GOVERNMENT card gives subsidies of Ᵽ50 T or Ᵽ100 T. Finally, CONSUMER card is used to pay an amount of Ᵽ50 T, Ᵽ100 T and Ᵽ150 T. The player presents the agribusiness stakeholder card to the Agribusiness Facilitator every time he uses it.

18. A player may use the MONEY CARDS as payment to the acquisition of agribusiness products at any rate. The money on hand and collected money bills from playing cards of the player can be used to acquire products and pay fines. The player can also receive extra money from Agribusiness Facilitator gained from bonuses received. The latter is responsible for any transaction involving the use of money like money exchange, payment of fines, provision of bonuses, among others.

19. The SPECIAL cards provide fines or bonuses to the players. The special cards comprise of opportunity cost, fortuity, perishability, agri power, seasonality, weather, profit, loss, inflation, deflation, surplus, shortage, demand and supply. OPPORTUNITY COST card is used to act as any of the four agribusiness stakeholders (crop producer, livestock raiser, food processor and input supplier). FORTUITY card gives a chance to acquire any agribusiness product without pay. PERISHABILITY cards is used to forego an acquired agribusiness product. AGRI POWER card is used to capture and buy an acquired product at a half-price of its listed price. SEASONALITY card is used to receive a bonus (Ᵽ50 T) or incur fine (Ᵽ50 T). WEATHER card is used to receive a bonus (Ᵽ100 T) or incur fine (Ᵽ100 T). PROFIT card is used to obtain a bonus of Ᵽ50 T, Ᵽ100 T and Ᵽ150 T. LOSS card is used to incur a fine of Ᵽ50 T, Ᵽ100 T and Ᵽ150 T. SURPLUS card is used to reduce the value/price of the product to be acquired by 50%. SHORTAGE card is used to increase the value/price of the product to be acquired by 50%. DEMAND card is used to increase or decrease the value of the product acquired by 50%.
