T h e r a n k i n g of p e r t i n e n c y of d o c u m e n t s and its u t i l i t y is dis-c u s s e d .

QUERY F O R M U L A T I O N Use r' s Que r y

It is the i n f o r m a t i o n r e q u i r e d by a p a r -ticular u s e r of an i n f o r m a t i o n s y s t e m . In o t h e r words, it is a q u e s t i o n by an u s e r of an i n f o r -mation s y s t e m . In a b a t c h p r o c e s s i n g s y s t e m , a n i n f o r m a t i o n s p e c i a l i s t i n t e r p r e t s the " u s e r r e q u i r e m e n t s " and " f r a m e s the q u e s t i o n " -may be in a d i f f e r e n t f o r m , - t o the i n f o r m a t i o n system. In an o n - l i n e i n f o r m a t i o n s y s t e m , the user is n o r m a l l y guided by "a s h o r t t r a i n i n g " in i n f o r m a t i o n of the q u e r y , which is a c h i e v e d by "dialogue with the s y s t e m " and h e n c e , in an o n - l i n e s y s t e m the b u i l t - i n c a p a c i t y of " u s e r guidance" is e s s e n t i a l . H o w e v e r , in the p a p e r , I am c o n s i d e r i n g the b a t c h p r o c e s s i n g only, where the u s e r q u e r y is not put d i r e c t l y to the system, but i n t e r p r e t t e d b y a n i n f o r m a t i o n specialist.
