Year 2009

For the third consecutive year, The Regent Berlin’s Fischers Fritz restaurant has earned two stars from Michelin, the French guide to fine dining. Chef de Cuisine Christian Lohse has maintained his crown as Berlin’s only 2 Michelin-starred Chef for his classic French cuisine with a contemporary twist. In fall 2007, Lohse’s dedication to his craft and relentless pursuit of perfection has placed him firmly at the forefront of Berlin’s culinary world, when he became the first Berlin chef in 13 years, who merit 2 Michelin stars.

“I am delighted to be celebrating this most sought after culinary honor, with Christian Lohse and his team”, says Stefan Athmann, General Manager at The Regent Berlin. “To receive two stars from Michelin is an impressive achievement, to retain them for the third succeeding year, is a great motivation for us all to continue to strive even further in the pursuit of excellence.”

By sustaining the two Michelin stars for the third time, Christian Lohse confirms his position as one of the most celebrated chefs in Germany and follows up on his previous awards. Prior to his engagement at The Regent Berlin he worked at such renowned places like 3-starred “L’Espérance” in Vezelay, the “Guy Savoy” in Paris and “The Dorchester” in London, where he became the personal chef to the Sultan of Brunei.

Roman Schneider:

Rising star of Manchester

Hand-picked by head chef Andy Green of the Park Inn Manchester Victoria (UK) as a star of the future, chef Roman Schneider recently took part in the Young Star Chef Initiative, an idea developed and led by the tourist board Visit Manchester, launched to recognise the city’s emerging chef talent by providing a showcasing opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments. Roman’s challenge was to design and produce his own menu and lead the kitchen for one night only. Judging by the rave reviews he received, Roman is certainly helping to put the Park Inn Manchester Victoria on the culinary map!

Teaming up for victory

A team from the Radisson Blu Hotel in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, has landed first prize in the Unilever Chef of the Year

competition. Six teams were given a mystery basket and 30 minutes to plan and create their culinary surprises. With Executive Chef Stuart Cason at the helm devising the menu but restricted to a supervisory and advisory role, the Radisson Blu team beat off stiff competition from all over the country to take top honours.

Surprise tally of medals

The Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek, has yet again notched up an impressive array of medals at the annual festival event Dubai Summer Surprises: 31 in all! Chefs competed in a series of events and categories and the hotel picked up a total of 6 silver medals for Ice Carving, Practical Cookery and Four

Plated Desserts, along with 13 bronze medals ranging from Four Plated Desserts, Practical Cake Decoration, Fruit & Vegetable Carving and Five Course Gourmet menu to Ice Carving and Practical Cookery, not to mention 12 merit medals.

Setting

a good example

Vienna’s Radisson Blu Palais Hotel claimed one of the awards in the Amuse Bouche 2009 Top Apprentice Competition, as apprentice Nicole Wesolowski (pictured left) beat 20 competitors to win the “Most beautiful table-setting” category.

Amuse Bouche is an initiative developed by representatives of Vienna’s top hotels. It was established to improve the image of apprenticeships in Austria’s tourism industry under the patronage of Eckart Witzigmann, one of the world’s most renowned chefs. The aim is to activate, motivate and train young apprentices in the hotel and tourism business, as well as to improve the communication of careers opportunities to the public.

After winning the title of Croatian Barman of the Year, Srecko Šoh, currently Bar Manager at the Regent Esplanade Zagreb, finished in an excellent 8th place in the World Championships in Berlin last August with his Red & Fancy cocktail. But Srecko is no stranger to winning prizes, having taken part in regional, national and international competitions since 1999, when he began his professional career as a waiter. His latest achievement is still attracting press interest, with a recent six-page interview featuring in gourmet magazine Gastro Exclusive.

Certo, the Italian restaurant at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Media City won the double at the Time Out Dubai restaurant Awards 2009. Fist place for the ‘Highly commended Italian Restaurant’ and ‘High commended Business Lunch’ categories.

RBG Bar & Grill at the Park Inn Belfast receives a great review from Darryl Greer of the Irish News newspaper - ‘Understated New York style’.

Radisson SAS Carlton Hotel, Bratislava

The Executive Chef of the Oasis restaurant at the Radisson SAS Carlton Hotel, Bratislava - Peter “Fesi” Dudas - was recognized at the course in Yves Thuries Culinary Academy Slovakia to stay 2 weeks in restaurant “Le Grand Ecuyer” in Cordes sur Ciel, France which was awarded by Guide Michelin with one star.

Radisson SAS Carlton Hotel, Bratislava

According to independent judges in publication TREND TOP RESTAURANTS AND HOTELS 2009, the Oasis Restaurant at Radisson SAS Carlton Hotel, Bratislava becomes one of 12 best Trend Top restaurants in Slovakia and Peter “Fesi Dudas, Executive Chef become Trend Top Chefs in Slovakia.

The basserie de Verres en Vers at the Radisson Blu Astorija Hotel, Vilnius wins the Platinum Platter 2009 Award in the nomination of ‘Best New Restaurant in Vilnius 2009’

Manchester’s Waiter of the Year

Henning Gallinat of the Radisson Blu Hotel Manchester Airport has been crowned Waiter of the Year at the Manchester Festival of Food & Drink. After notching up the top score in the semi-final, the final saw him competing against the very best waiters from restaurants and hotels across the region. His final challenge was to serve a table of four in restaurant conditions, including mise en place, and even

coordinating the kitchen team. Henning was rewarded for an excellent performance with first prize of a study trip to Dubai.

Croatian Barman of the Year

Srecko Šoh, Bar Manager at The Regent Esplanade Zagreb, has won the Croatian Barman of the Year award after his Angel cocktail attracted top marks for appearance, aroma, taste and overall impression. Srecko will now represent Croatia at the World Bartenders Championships in Berlin in August. He started his professional career 10 years ago and has been winning prizes ever since!

Radisson Blu: No. 1 Restaurant in Czech Republic

The Alcron restaurant at the Radisson Blu Alcron Hotel, Prague is on top of the charts of the Czech gourmet guide, Grand Restaurants 2009. La Rotonde restaurant is also ranked as one of the Top 10 restaurants on the same guide.

Radisson Blu: Best Restaurant in Johannesburg

Vivace, at the Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton, Johannseburg, has won the Best Restaurant in Johannesburg award at HOSTEX, South Africa’s international hospitality & catering exhibition. Executive Chef Paul Gindra and Sous Chef Jelele Mokhine weaved their magic by creating a divine menu that helped Vivace beat eight top restaurants, including Roots, which is frequently voted one of South Africa’s best restaurants.

The prestigious and influential restaurant guide Gault Millau published its 2009 edition, ranking the Sea Grill restaurant at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Brussels amongst the top three restaurants in Belgium, with an impressive score of 19/20. Not only famous for the exquisite gastronomic creations of Executive Chef Yves Mattagne, the restaurant is also very much appreciated for its fine wine cellar selected with savoir-faire by restau-rant director Marc Meremans. Gault Millau 2009 lists more than 1,000 best restaurants in Belgium and Luxembourg.
