THE HERALD
FROM THE ASSISTANT PASTOR
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
I’m enjoying summer weather, but also looking forward to fall! We have many activities lined up for fall and hope that you will all join us!
This month, our gospel lessons return to Mark 7, where Jesus performs miracles for those who are not Jewish and outside of the establishment, for the removal of a demon from Syrophoenician (Gentile) woman’s daughter and to heal a deaf man. Jesus was not only welcoming to people outside of their community, but Jesus also healed them, which led them to have a great belief in his being the Messiah.
In our society today, we are protective because we fear people who could harm us, and sometimes with good reason. We fear being scammed by people on email and the phone, we are protective of those who could steal from us or harm us physically, and these days, we don’t know who to trust. But in a church, we must also be welcoming to those who may be different or those who may have very different opinions.
So, the best thing we can do right now with everyone is to be good listeners. It can be hard to listen, especially when you don’t agree with the person. But we don’t want to cause people to be defensive or aggressive, especially when we are greeting those who are new or maybe not so new. There are several websites that can provide information on how to listen or active listening. Here are some suggestions based on https://www.mindtools.com/CommSkll/ActiveListening.htm:
1. Pay attention (i.e., look directly at the person)
2. Show that you are listening (i.e., nod that you are listening)
3. Provide feedback (i.e., reflect to the person what you heard from them) 4. Defer judgement (i.e., allow the person to finish speaking and don’t interrupt) 5. Respond appropriately (i.e., assert opinions respectively and honestly)
Keep in mind how you might want to be treated by someone else. If you think about it, Jesus listened and responded to the woman in Mark 7:25-30, even if at first it didn’t seem like it. “Yet he could not escape notice,
25 but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered him, “Sir,[h] even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” 29 Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.”
30 So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.” Jesus responded as we would expect; that’s how you treat someone in need.
As summer ends, may you all be blessed and safe in the fall with the new school year.
Blessings, Pr. Caroline

JOIN US FOR A NEW BOOK FOR THE BOOK CLUB!
We will gather at the Stanton Daily Grind for another meeting of the book club on Tuesday, September 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. We will discuss the book "Lamb: The gospel according to Biff, Christ's childhood pal" by C. Moore. It's a light-hearted story about the life of Jesus outside of what we know about Jesus. Here is a brief synopsis of the book: “The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirteen birtday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years – except Biff, the Messiah’s best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in this divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work
“reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams”
(Philadelphia Inquirer).” Please contact Pr.
Caroline at
[email protected] or724-837-7327 if you plan to attend or would like more information or a book. Please also feel free to suggest books for future readings. We welcome all to join us!

MUSIC MINISTRY CORNER
Hello Harrold Zion Family!
Another season of music is set to begin! I have many exciting things planned for this year. If you are interested in participating in any of the following, please email me at: [email protected]
Choirs and Bells to Resume in September!
Youth Choir & Musicians, Adult Choir and Bell Choir will all resume on Wednesday, September 1st!!! I can’t wait to make beautiful music together again! The schedule will be:
5:30 Youth Choir & Musicians 6:00 Handbells
7:00 Adult Choir Youth Music
As many of you know, one of my main goals at Harrold Zion has been to build a youth music program. Music education not only benefits children’s growing minds, it also helps them understand the Word like no other method can. When children participate in service music, they feel involved and connected to the Lord and to the congregation. This year, I am seeking both youth instrumentalists and singers for opportunities throughout the season. No experience is needed! All skill levels accepted!
Campfire Hymn Sing
Come join us on September 25th at 6:00pm for our second Campfire Hymn Sing! Bring a lawn chair, grab a snack, sit by the fire, and sing along with your favorite hymns! If you play an instrument and want to join the Campfire Ensemble, get in touch with me! Thank you to all who braved the cold during our first event in March; this new date should be far more pleasant!
Reformation Sunday
Musicians needed for Reformation Sunday! I am planning to arrange “A Mighty Fortress” for a large choir and instrumentalists. All instruments and skill levels welcome! If you are not member of the choir, but are interested in singing on this special Sunday- Let me know!
Thank you to all my Harrold Zion family for all the prayers,
thoughts and positive messages that you have given me over the last several months.
I am happy to report that I am recovering from my surgery and healing.
I praise God for modern medicine and his healing hand that he had upon this whole process.
Blessings to you all,
Mandy Kanouff

11 COUNCIL MEETING July 19th, 2021
CALL TO ORDER: 6:30 Present: Larry Myers, Joanne Gebhardt, Bob Eicher, Ross Thompson, Pastor
Caroline, Don Freeman, Pastor James West, Bob Majcher, Bonnie Free, Josh Chenoweth, Mandy Kanouff and Sheri Anderson. Devotion by Pastor West
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: Minutes approved as recorded.
TREASURERS REPORT: Motion to accept Treasurer’s report by Bob Eicher. Second by Don Freeman.
Motion carried.
SENIOR PASTOR’S REPORT: I trust that you had an enjoyable Summer. It is vital for you to enjoy this all too short respite from the work of the congregation. Savor the wonder of being able to enjoy so many things that we once took for granted. The Transition Team is phoning the membership, first from church and now from home. They leave messages and record responses. This Wednesday we will meet with one of our new members to catch a glimpse of what attracted her and her family to the congregation. The next phase of the self-study will be to offer forums at church and in homes to share what the team is learning. These small group conversations will fill in the picture of who we are and what God is calling us to do. Emily O’Neil and I reviewed the differences between our current constitution (adopted in 2010) and the model constitution. The model constitution (2019) has the amendments that we agreed to at the several Churchwide Assemblies that convened since 2010. If you are interested in meeting with boards and agencies, let me know. As an interim pastor, I rather enjoy inviting myself to meet with local leaders. You are welcome to join me on these courtesy calls. I hope that you do because you will be around long after I have left. The purpose of these calls is to find out what is on the hearts and minds of our local leaders. Sometimes an opportunity emerges where we can be of service in areas that we had overlooked. August marks the beginning of Harrold Zion’s 250th year of being a congregation. I asked Pastor Peter Asplin how to invite our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Easton, to attend one of our events. He recommended contacting her directly. It has been about four years since she visited the Pittsburgh area. Bishop Kurt Kusserow is looking forward to joining us for one of our yet to be scheduled events, as well. August 5, 1774 is the official date of our establishment. Do you know of people who are willing to serve on the 250th Anniversary Committee? It’s okay to volunteer yourself. I am excited about the Fall Carnival and the start of our education program. As I said at the beginning, I hope that you enjoyed the Summer with its time of relaxation and reflection.
ASSISTANT PASTOR’S REPORT: Assistant Pastor’s Council Report – July 19, 2021 The following contains updates for the time period June/July:
1. Preaching – Pr. James and I have been splitting preaching and presiding duties.
2. Worship – Pr. James and I are working on worship and bulletins for regular services. There is still one student who needs to be confirmed, date TBD. I met with the altar guild; there is a person who may be interested in taking over the altar guild, but she is still weighing the pros and cons. We have most months covered currently. The staff and I will be doing some organizing of the communion sacristy later in the month to make it easier for those setting up for communion.
3. Visitation –Visits are taking place when needed, mainly at hospitals, although retirement communities are opening up. I had a meeting for the at-home communion people in late June, and those in this ministry are looking forward to visiting people again. However, we still run into issues with COVID restrictions when a case happens in the retirement community.
4. Special Events –I participated in VBS in leading Bible Adventures all five days in mid-June. We also had a bike blessing along with a kite flying activity on June 20; the fellowship committee took care of providing snacks. The Sonshiners met for the first time in over a year, at Hoss’s. It was very well attended, and it was clear the group was excited to get together. Since preparing food could be an issue for COVID and people being ready for a change, lunch will not always be provided, although some meetings food will be brought in or an event will be scheduled at a venue in advance. The group is also looking for other ideas to center the meeting around. I am starting a book club to meet once or twice a month; the first book has been on Cross Roads by Paul Young, and we met on July 14th and will meet again on July 28th.
12 5. Meetings – I have attended several Zoom meetings: Synod Committee meetings, meetings with the
Lutheran Campus Board of Pittsburgh, and pastor bible studies (pastor bible study has now moved to in person). The synod ministerium meeting has changed to meet monthly rather than weekly. We have had staff meetings in person. Pastor West has been meeting with me and the staff weekly. Led meetings for altar guild and home communion. A new member class will be held on July 24th, with at least 3 people interested in joining.
6. Funerals, Baptisms, and Weddings – Met with a couple on Zoom in order to make plans for their wedding.
They will be in town sometime in August to meet in person (wedding in December). Also working with one couple who will be having a wedding here and another pastor will co-preside with me (wedding in October). We have had three baptisms in the last few weeks. I led a funeral at a funeral home.
7. Choir –Choirs will not rehearse or be included in worship over the summer.
8. We had a holiday for July 4th.
FAMILY MINISTY CORRDINATOR REPORT: I have been spending this past month planning upcoming events and preparing for the 2021/2022 Bible School curriculum, backpack blessing and meetings. I have joined the Rally Day Carnival planning committee. I also planned for our annual God’s work. Our hands.
outreach project with a T-shirt sale. I continue to reach out to families. A few have conveyed concerns for returning back to in-person worship, since no vaccine available for their children. My future plans are to continue planning for the upcoming events, bible school, First Holy Communion class and continuing my education.
COMMUNICATIONS: Meals on Wheels sent a “thank you” card for the $500 donation from HZ VBS.
AUDIT COMMITTEE: No Report.
CALL COMMITTEE: No Report.
CEMETERY COMMITTEE: No Report.
YOUTH AND FAMILY COMMITTEE: Meeting will resume the first Sunday of each month after the 10:30am worship service. The next meeting will take place on September 5th.
Upcoming events:
Splash day 8/8
Family Fun Night 8/18 Juice, Joe and Dough 8/22 Halloween party, October TBD Talent Show 11/12
Jesus Birthday Party, December TBD Winter VBS, January 2022 TBD
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Sunday Bible Classes for all ages; resume Sunday September 12th 2021. As always, we are in need for adult leaders. Pastor Caroline is overseeing Adult Christian Education. All adult bible groups should contact her for scheduling and materials needed. A new curriculum has been chosen for confirmation classes. A confirmation information meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 29th at 2:00pm. A Christian Education Committee meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 29th at 9:00am.
EVANGELISM COMMITTEE: Since the last Council meeting, the Evangelism Committee met once on July 11th, and were joined by members from the Fellowship Committee. Those in attendance included Linda Boyer, Rick Yaksic, Sue Yaksic, Kelly Perry, Joanne Gebhardt, Sue Molnar, Jack Molnar, Lisa Zundel, Brad Zundel, Bonnie Free, Kim Cribbs, Ross Thompson, Pastor James, and Sheri Anderson. Among the topics covered were… RALLY DAY – September 12th Jack Molnar suggested the name be changed to RALLY DAY CARNIVAL, so that it would be more in keeping with the celebratory atmosphere we hope to convey. It was decided to ask for a free-will offering for the meal instead of setting specific prices. The meal will include a
13 Burger, Chips, a beverage, and a coupon for an ice cream treat. Most of the costs are being covered through donations (from Thrivent Action Dollars and others). Last year about 200 meals were served. This year we hope to increase this number through additional promotion and advertising… • On the Church Website • Facebook • Newspaper ads • Signage visible from the road • Decorations & Balloons to attract attention In addition to the meal, the Carnival will include… • Games for Kids • A Mission Tent promoting the Opportunities that exist at Harrold Zion • Free books for Pre-schoolers • Some sort of a drawing/contest to get names, addresses and emails • Possibly a “Bounce House,” after costs and any other issues are explored
REGARDING JOYS AND CONCERNS… Due to time limitations, there was limited discussion on this topic.
However, there was consensus that Joys and Concerns would be best just following the Sharing of the Peace, rather than at the beginning of the service. OTHER ITEMS BEING CONSIDERED - Compiling a complete list of ministries at the church to be used at the Mission Tent - Updating the Welcome packet available to visitors - Suggested changes to the Web Site were given to Sheri Anderson. Submitted by Ross Thompson
FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE: The Bike and Hike event was held July 10th at Cedar Creek Park. The weather was perfect, the park is beautiful, and everyone had a good time.
Outdoor Movie Night
Join your Harrold Zion family for a showing of the 2019 Live Action Disney’s The Lion King on Friday August 6 th at dusk (Rain date of Friday August 13 th). Please bring a can/dry good to donate to the local food bank and your lawn chairs/blankets for the viewing. Seating will be on the hillside next to the pavilion.
Fellowship Committee will help the Evangelism committee with the events for Rally Day September 12, 2021
FINANCE COMMITTEE: No report.
INVESTMENT COMMITTEE: Motion by Bob Majcher: as per the recommendation in the Investment
