The Lee Valley White Water Centre, located in Hertfordshire, will host the Canoe Slalom competition during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Opened in Spring 2011, the venue was the first venue to be completed and the only newly built London 2012 sports complex venue that the public have used ahead of the Games. It has been designed to become a centre of excellence for white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking for the local community and tourists after the Games.

The Centre features an independent dual-channel facility, the first of its kind.

This concept has a number of benefits, the first being legacy, the two courses increase flexibility and uses before and after the Olympic Games.

The second main benefit of the independent dual-channel is a reduction in energy use, with the smaller Legacy Course using 80% less power than the Olympic Course, ensuring the Centre continues to operate commercially after the Games.

This indoor powered rowing tank is ideal for refining elite athletes rowing technique and introducing rowing beginners to the sport. A top quality tank has been delivered for muscle specific conditioning, technique training and off season rowing.

Moving large volumes of water at a high velocity (9800 l/s, 3.2 m/s), for the purpose of athlete training, in the conditioned space of an indoor pool required detailed CFD analysis of the flow conditions. Minimising the turbulence of the water flow and generation of standing waves was critical, so the experience for the athlete was as similar to being on the river as possible and to minimise pumping energy and maximise the water speed.
