Remote  DBA  Services  and  Systems  Administration  for  Chemeketa   Community  College  

CLIENT

Chemeketa  Community  College  is  a  comprehensive  educational  institution   located  in  the  Willamette  Valley.  The  College  serves  an  annual,  unduplicated   student  headcount  of  approximately  50,000  students.  The  College  employs   approximately  1,700  faculty,  staff,  and  administrators.  The  curriculum  includes   vocational  programs,  community  education,  academic  transfer  courses,  and   classes  in  basic  skills.  The  main  campus  is  located  in  Salem,  Oregon  with  

additional  campuses  located  in  Dallas,  McMinnville,  and  Woodburn.  Revenues   received  by  the  College  are  derived  from  tuition  and  fees,  property  tax  levies,   state  funds,  grants  and  contracts,  interest  on  investments,  and  other  

miscellaneous  sources.    

CHALLENGE  

Chemekta  Community  College  was  in  need  of  a  firm  to  support  the  Database   and  Systems  Administration  team  at  CCC.  The  emergency  was  because  of  the   resource  turnover  and  also  overload  of  tasks  for  the  current  teams.  The  critical   issue  that  N2N  team  was  tasked  to  handle  was  to  support  the  migration  of   CCC’s  Banner  ®  environment  from  Solaris  to  Linux.  In  addition  to  hardware   migration,  N2N  team  was  tasked  with  the  application  of  11g  upgrades.    

The  contract  awardee  was  required  install  and  support  Oracle  APEX  in  an  

Oracle  Web  Logic  middle  tier.  This  project  scope  included  Luminis  deployments   and/or  integration  with  SunGard  Banner  channels;  CAS,  GCF,  and  IDM

development;  the  installation  and  support  of  Banner  baseline  products,   including  internet-­‐  native  Banner  (INB),  self-­‐service  Banner  (SSB)  and  Banner   SaaS  modules;  and  the  integration  of  software  solutions,  including  integrating   reporting  and  analytical  tools,  within  the  Banner  environment.  

SOLUTION

The  N2N  team  has  experience  in  Solaris,  Linux  (RHEL,  Oracle,  Centos,  Ubuntu,   SUSE),  Windows  (as  it  pertains  to  WebLogic  and  Oracle).    Our  Systems  and  DBA   teams  have  spent  the  past  9  years  on  Banner  consulting.  6  years  in  an  

enterprise  level  environment  at  Portland  State  University  before  moving  to   work  in  the  consulting  realm  of  Higher  education.    The  majority  of  N2N's   implementations  are  migrations  from  OpenVMS  and  Solaris  to  Linux.    Very   rarely  do  clients  choose  to  use  Windows  for  any  of  the  application  servers,  but   this  does  come  up  from  time  to  time.  Our  team  has  successfully  completed   numerous  Luminis  conversions  and  upgrades,  as  well  as  fresh  deployments.   We  have  completed  several  installations  of  Luminis  IV.    The  bulk  of  these   implementations  used  the  GCF  to  Banner,  MS  Exchange,  and  D2L/WebCT.  CAS   is  a  required  component  when  installing  Luminis  IV  rather  than  being  optional.   We  have  setup  several  custom  java  and  PHP  applications  to  work  with  CAS  as   the  authentication  mechanism.    Regarding  the  integration  of  Google  Apps  we   have  completed  to  date  two  installations  where  we  implemented  a  custom   account  creation  system  in  PERL,  and  SSO  is  handled  via  a  SAML  server.  The   SSO  to  Google  Apps,  and  the  customization  of  the  portal  to  point  to  these   services/applications  is  not  a  complicated  endeavor.    The  most  notable   challenge  we  have  overcome  is  getting  the  accounts  created  in  real  time.       Most  schools  do  not  have  an  IDM  system  in  place  to  handle  these  types  of   events.  Leveraging  our  strengths  in  custom  programming  and  extensive   integration  experience  N2N  wrote  a  custom  PERL  module  to  handle  this.     Modern  IDM  systems  correctly  installed  usually  come  with  a  common  SDK  to   follow  for  integrating  with  Google  (i.e.  BEIS  or  Sun  IDM).

RESULTS

N2N  has  performed  in  a  Managed  Services  fashion  to  migrate  the  Banner®   environment  of  the  client  from  Solaris  to  Linux  environment.  In  addition  to   hardware  migration,  N2N’s  Systems  and  DBA  teams  have  upgraded  the  Oracle   RDBMS  from  10g  to  11g  and  SSB  environment  from  Oracle  Application  Server   to  WebLogic  platform.  

As  part  of  the  Project  Management  Methodology;  N2N  and  the  client  have   jointly  established  a  project  management  team  to  manage  the  project  plan,   project  resources,  scope,  as  to  serve  as  the  escalation  point  for  project  issues.   As  part  of  the  project  cycle,  the  project  management  team  will  prepare  the   project  plan  that  must  be  submitted  to,  reviewed,  and  approved  by  the  client’s   Steering  Committee,  including  the  N2N  representatives.    The  approved  project  

plan  will  be  the  mechanism  by  which  the  project  management  office  and  the  

Steering  Committee  monitor  project  progress  and  identify  changes  in  scope.     The  project  plan  will  also  identify  the  project  team  members  other  than  the   project  management  team;  the  deliverables  and  the  timing  of  the  deliverables   and  such  other  items  as  the  parties  mutually  agree  should  be  included.    

By  following  a  structured  and  disciplined  approach,  N2N  has  delivered  the   project  on  time  and  budget.  Client  has  N2N  on  an  ongoing  support  contract  to   support  the  Banner  Database  Administration,  Monitoring  and  SLA  based

SIMILAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

OpenVMS  to  Linux  Migration  –  As  of  July  2010  –  SunGard  dropped  the  support   for  Banner  Database  on  OpenVMS  Operating  System.    

N2N’s  Systems  and  Database  Administration  teams  have  assisted  several  

schools  in  South  Carolina  with  the  migration  of  their  Banner  environment  from   OpenVMS  to  Linux  Platform.    As  part  of  this  migration,  N2N’s  team  has  assisted   the  client  with  Banner  INB,  SSB,  Portal  and  third-­‐party  migrations.
