“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” ~Mark 10:25 Jesus uses tough language that we may not want to hear. But, we are all called to be generous with all our gifts. Not just the ones we pick and choose, but all our gifts: our time in prayer to God, our talent in participating in parish ministries, and our treasure supporting our local parish and other charities.

Thank you to all who made our patronal feast day possible! I know that the Archbishop enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate Mass here at St. Jerome. The Lord blessed us with beautiful weather for our Eucharistic procession, and to hear our school children and parish families praying the rosary and singing hymns while processing behind the Blessed Sacrament was deeply edifying. If you had the chance to come to hear Fr. Kizewski speak, or to join us for Vespers, I hope you’ll agree that it was a beautiful and prayerful evening. If you missed any of the evening events, be sure to check out the video posted on our YouTube page! The music for Vespers was led by ‘Musica Oramus.’ If you’re interested in learning more about this group, or supporting their mission, visit www.musicaoramus.org.

The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady — particularly, the Rosary. It is also a month dedicated to the protection of life, from conception to natural death. We live in a throwaway culture — if something is broken or unwanted, we throw it away. If my iPhone breaks, I throw it away and get a new one. If a particular meal is not cooked to my liking, or to my taste, I toss it out. This throwaway culture translates to how we treat each other. Those who are an inconvenience to us are cast aside, maltreated, or even worse, killed. It is most appropriate to speak about the most extreme violations against life: abortion and euthanasia, most especially. These are terrible atrocities that are far too common. Every life is sacred and worth living. We must continue to fight to protect life at every moment.

We also see our throwaway culture manifest itself in how we treat our neighbor. If someone is obnoxious to us, or an inconvenience, or gets on our nerves, we do everything possible to be rid of them. We see it manifested in how we treat our peers at school or at work — in cliques or gossip circles, in bullying, or treating someone with disrespect. We destroy people’s reputation through detraction. Depression and suicide is on the rise, especially in young people. We must ask ourselves how we participate in a culture that might exacerbate this tragedy. We spend more time placing unnecessary burdens and expectations on others rather than reminding them of God’s love for them. We often tear down by our words rather than build up.

It is our duty to fight against this throwaway culture by professing and living out the truth that every life is sacred and has been willed by God — even and especially lives that are seemingly miserable. “God chose the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him” (James 2:5).

Jesus says in the Gospels, “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Our Lady is the example, par excellence, of one who lived with an abundance of life. Despite living through immense external turmoil, she maintained inner peace and joy in the knowledge that she was loved infinitely by God. Even in watching her Son be nailed to the Cross, she trusted in God’s love. God desires that same abundance of life for each soul on this earth — a life that is only brought about by the knowledge of God’s love for us. St. Irenaeus famously said, “The glory of God is the living man and the life of man is the vision of God.” Let us give glory to God by promoting life — a life that, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, rejoices in being loved infinitely by God!

In Christ, Fr. Gibson

Baby Bottle Collection

The St. Jerome Respect Life Committee is sponsoring its annual Baby Bottle Collection during October — Respect Life Month. All families are invited to take part in this wonderful project that helps save the lives of unborn children and makes an eternal difference in the lives of their young mothers. Parishioners are asked to pick up a baby bottle from the baskets at the church entrances, take it home to fill with coins, cash or a check, and return to the bassinet in the narthex no later than the weekend of October 30 & 31.

This year all proceeds will benefit Life’s Connection Pregnancy

Center in Waukesha and Mukwonago. For more information on

all the wonderful work that Life’s Connection provides, please

go to their website: www.lifesconnection.org. (Donations are

tax-deductible.) Thank you in advance for your pro-life

Thackeray Trail Project

As you know, the construction of the new section of Thackeray Trail along our St. Jerome property was completed last year, and the construction on the existing Thackeray Trail continues into the Fall.

According to an agreement made at the time our school and church were built at our current location, St. Jerome Parish would be assessed to help pay for the portion of new road along our property. The final amount is still unknown, but it will be between $500,000 and $700,000.

To help meet our payment schedule, we will continue to use the monthly Debt Reduction envelopes which are included in your packet. In addition, any memorials received will go to the Thackeray Trail Fund unless designated otherwise. If you do not receive church envelopes, please indicate on your own envelope or check if you would like your donation to go toward this fund. For those who use online giving, please select

“Thackeray Trail Fund” for your donation.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped us retire

our mortgage debt! May God continue to bless your

generosity.

Vincentian Awareness Month

WEEK 1- SPIRITUALITY

On September 27th we celebrate the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, the patron saint of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Vincent was a priest during the 17th Century renowned for his compassion, humility, and generosity and is known as the

"Great Apostle of Charity." His teachings about God’s special presence in the poor are revolutionary even in our day. The St.

Vincent de Paul Society was established in Paris, in 1833, as an organization of faith by young men who wanted to live their faith more fully. The St. Vincent de Paul Society has been present in the United States for over 175 years. The Society is represented in the Milwaukee Archdiocese by over 120 conferences throughout our Catholic parishes.

Essential to the foundation of a conference is a focus on the elements of Spirituality, Friendship and Service. Journeying together towards holiness is central to the calling of a Vincentian (member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul). They dedicate time to showing Christ’s love to people experiencing poverty, suffering, and need. They gain the inspiration to do so through their shared spirituality along with a life of prayer and reflection on the Holy Scriptures, devotion to the Eucharist and by seeking the protection of the Virgin Mary.

Today begins our month-long awareness series to inspire you to learn more about the society and how the loving presence of God is found in service to the poor. Vincentian members of our parish ask for your prayers to encourage them in their mission of following Christ through compassionate service to those in need.

You can find more information about the National Society of St.

Vincent de Paul at www.svdpusa.org. Our local website is
