BYU vs. PEPPERDINE: BATTLE OF TOP-RANKED TEAMS

Coming off its first road trip of the season, BYU will return to Provo to play Pepperdine in a battle of the

top teams in the country as the Cougars are ranked No. 2 and Pepperdine is ranked No. 1. The teams

will play Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

The No. 2 Cougars are 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while Pepperdine is

5-0 overall and 5-0 in the MPSF. Pepperdine is first in the MPSF while BYU is second. The Waves handed

previously ranked No. 1 Long Beach State its first loss on Thursday Jan. 28 to move into the top spot.

“These matches are the most important of the season to date and they could end up determining if we

have a chance at hosting the MPSF Tournament,” BYU coach Tom Peterson said. “We have to win these

matches to have a chance at hosting the MPSF playoffs. Pepperdine has already defeated Long Beach

and I don’t expect them to lose many more matches.”

The MPSF regular-season champion earns the right to host the postseason tournament. The tournament

champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Final Four. Since 1999, BYU has hosted the tournament

three times (1999, 2001 and 2004) and Pepperdine has hosted four times (2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005). The

Cougars won the tournament in 1999, 2003 and 2004 while the Waves won in 2002 and 2005.

Last weekend, BYU split with UCLA in Los Angeles. The Cougars lost game one of the first match but

then put on a dominant offensive display to take the next three. The second match went five games as

BYU took a 2-1 lead but then yielded games four and five to the Bruins. Ivan Perez led the Cougars in

kills both nights with 21 and 20 kills. Perez leads the team in kills per game at 4.74.

Pepperdine has four players averaging over 3.50 kills per game, led by Jon Grobe at 3.84. Andy Hein

averages 3.60 and is hitting .534.

BYU outside hitter Yosleyder Cala will suit up for the first time this season. The Cuban native was

recently cleared by the NCAA to compete. He brings valuable experience to the Coguars, having played

several years for the Cuban National Team.

“He’s such a great talent and will be an impact player,” Peterson said. “He’ll be an exciting player to

watch.”

Friday’s match can be seen live on BYUTV. Check your local satellite and cable provider for availability.

PEREZ SWEEPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS (Jan. 23)

Ivan Perez swept the national and league weekly honors the week of Jan. 23 by being named the

American Volleyball Coaches Association and Mountain Pacific Sport Federation Player of the Week

for his play in No. 2 BYU’s back-to-back wins over then No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. On Friday, the

sopho-more from Puerto Rico had a season-high 23 kills, hit .472 (23-6-36) and recorded six digs and four

blocks in leading the Cougars to a 3-1 win over Santa Barbara. BYU started the match with 14 kills on

15 attempts, including Perez going six-for-six. Perez continued his hot play by pounding out a

match-high 19 kills and hitting a season-match-high .571 (19-3-28) on Saturday. For the weekend, Perez averaged 6.00

kills per game, hit .516 (42-9-64) and had 46 service return attempts without and error.

ALMOST PERFECT

The Cougars had their second game of the season in which they hit over .600 in their win over UCLA,

Friday Jan. 26. After dropping game one to the Bruins and then winning game two, BYU dominated

game three, hitting .636 (15-1-22) and winning 30-14. The Cougars’ other game in which they hit over

.600 was game one against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 20. BYU started that game 14-for-15 without any

errors and finished at .682 (17-2-22). Ivan Perez was a perfect 6-for-6 that game.

STRONG SERVING

Last season, BYU set a school record by serving 174 aces. While the Cougars are not on pace to match

that total in 2006, they had their best service match of the season on Thursday, Jan. 26 against UCLA.

In that match, BYU had nine aces, led by Victor Batisa’s career high of four and Taylor Evans’ three.

Rodrigo Gomes came off the bench to serve his first-career ace and Jonathan Charette added another.

MPSF PRESEASON COACHES’ POLL

BYU was picked to finish first in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for the 2006 season in the

first-ever MPSF Preseason Men’s Volleyball Coaches’ Poll. The Cougars finished third in the MPSF at 15-7

last season and were 20-10 overall and ranked No. 8 in the final USA Today/CSTV Coaches’ poll.

“It’s a great honor to think other coaches think so highly of our program,” BYU coach Tom Peterson

said. “Obviously it’s a good challenge for us to live up to those expectations. Of course the idea is to

be in that same spot at the end of the season.”

A LOOK AT PEPPERDINE

Pepperdine enters the weekend ranked No. 1 for the first time this season. The Waves, 5-0 overall and

in the MPSF, received 15 of the possible 16 first-place votes in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Poll. Last

week, the Waves defeated then No. 1 Long Beach on the road in four games and then swept UC San

Diego. Pepperdine has four players averaging over 3.50 kills per game, led by Jon Grobe at 3.84.

LAST YEAR VS. PEPPERDINE

Pepperdine was the only team that BYU did not defeat in 2005 at least once. The Cougars and Waves

played two matches in Malibu, Calif. and Pepperdine won the first meeting 3-1. The Waves won games

one and two 30-27 and 30-25 and hit over .400 in each. BYU came back to win game three but lost game

four 30-17. Michael Burke had 11 kills, no errors and hit .611. The Waves swept the Cougars the next

night, 30-20, 30-28, 30-14. Pepperdine hit .500 compared to .206 for BYU. Burke had nine kills and hit

.571 whileVictor Batista and Ivan Perez had 12 kills apiece to lead the Cougars.

SERIES NOTES

The Cougars and Waves will meet for the 37th and 38th times in the history of the series when they

square off Friday and Saturday in the Fieldhouse. Pepperdine owns a 21-15 lead but BYU has a 10-6

advantage in Provo, including three-consecutive wins in the Fieldhouse in 2004. The Waves won the

first nine matches of the series, from 1990-94. The teams have met 10 times since Tom Peterson took

over the BYU program in 2003, each team winning five times. Under Peterson, the Cougars have

knocked Pepperdine out of the MPSF tournament twice. In 2003, BYU went to Malibu and defeated

the Waves for the MPSF tournament title. In 2004, the Cougars defeated Pepperdine in the semifinals

in Provo. Both matches went to five games. Interestingly, BYU is 10-0 against Pepperdine when the

match reaches a fifth game.

Tom Peterson, coach of two NCAA national championship teams, BYU alum

and 1994 NCAA Coach of the Year, enters his fourth year as the head coach of

the Cougar men’s volleyball program. In 2005, he led BYU to a 20-10 overall

record and a third-place finish in the MPSF at 15-7 despite returning just two

starters from the 2004 National Championship team. It was the Cougar’s

fourth-consecutive 20-win season and third in three years under Peterson. He coached

four All-MPSF performers and three All-Americans in 2005.

Peterson guided the Cougars to one of their most successful seasons in 2004,

leading BYU to a 29-4 record and a first-place finish at the NCAA Tournament

while coaching four All-Americans and the school’s first AVCA National

Player of the Year. He also guided the Cougars to regular-season and

MPSF-tournament championships. By defeating UC Irvine in the first round of the MPSF Tournament, Peterson

earned the 300th win of his collegiate coaching career. His record currently stands at 200-72 coaching NCAA

men’s volleyball (BYU and Penn State) and 324-151 overall.

With a victory over Lewis in the NCAA Semifinals, Peterson led BYU to its fourth National Championship

match in six years. After splitting the first four games with Long Beach State, the Cougars came back from a

10-6 deficit and saved two 49er match points to win the decisive fifth game, 19-17. A native of Orem, Utah,

Peterson came to BYU in 2002 with over 20 years of volleyball coaching experience, including 17 years as

a collegiate head coach. In 1983, he was an assistant to women’s coach Elaine Michaelis. In 1984, Peterson

assumed the head-coaching duties of the BYU men’s volleyball club team, guiding the Cougars to three

consecutive National Collegiate Club Championships from 1986-88.

After five seasons at BYU as coach of the club team, Peterson was hired as the head coach of the Penn

State NCAA men’s volleyball team (1989-94). He guided Penn State to five NCAA Final Four appearances

in six years, including a National Championship in 1994. That National Championship victory was one

of Peterson’s most memorable coaching experiences, as it was “a thrill to be the first non-California team

to win.” The Nittany Lions earned a 25-3 (.893) record in 1994 and Peterson was named the NCAA Men’s

Volleyball Coach of the Year. During his six years at Penn State, Peterson guided the Nittany Lions to a

128-50 (.719) overall record.

His next coaching stop was a three-season stint as the head women’s coach at Salt Lake Community

College, where he posted an 83-38 (.686) record from 1996-98. He had been working full-time as a physical

education teacher at SLCC when he was asked to start a women’s volleyball team. The team was ranked

No. 7 in its first year.

After SLCC he coached the Utah State women’s team for two seasons, leading the team to a 22-10 record in

2000, only his second year with the program. That season, the Aggies earned an NCAA Tournament berth

for the first time in program history, advancing to the second round. Peterson guided Utah State to as high

as No. 17 in the national polls and finished ranked No. 22, marking the program’s first top-25 ranking.

The University of New Mexico then hired Peterson as the head coach of its women’s team. He coached the

Lobos for one season before returning to BYU in 2002.

Education has always been important to Peterson, who holds a doctoral degree in physical education

administration, curriculum and instruction from BYU with a minor in educational psychology (1992). He

earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and his secondary teaching certificate from BYU in 1978.

In 1982 Peterson earned a master’s degree in professional leadership from BYU. He currently teaches sports

psychology at BYU. Peterson is married to the former Sheryl Rice of Bakersfield, Calif. Sheryl is also active

in the volleyball circle, having served as the director of the Lobo Volleyball League in Albuquerque, one of

the largest recreational volleyball programs in the country. Outside of volleyball, the Petersons enjoy
