Short Learning Programmes

South Africa (Unisa)

Short learning programmes normally have a duration of 6 to 24 months and culminate in an examination conducted at the University’s examination centres. On completion of the examination, a certificate is issued to the successful candidates.

This information brochure for prospective students is not complete. Additional information about specific programmes and application forms can be obtained from the address which appears under the relevant short learning programme.

The University reserves the right not to offer a programme in a particular year.

Tuition for most of the short learning programmes in this brochure is provided by means of distance education. For some programmes, a�endance of a study school is compulsory.

Certificate Programme in Basics of

Business*

The aim of this programme is to train entrepreneurs and managers in the basic principles underlying business. The programme consists of four modules and focuses on the economy; the business enterprise and business management; financial, legal and risk aspects; and management aids.

Students who have passed this programme may apply for possible exemption from the requirement to register for and pass the modules in Introduction to the Economic and Management Environment (INM101 and INM102) when they register for a BCom, BCompt, BAdmin, BBA or BBanking degree at Unisa. Students with a Std 10 (Grade 12) certificate without matriculation exemption who want to gain admission to degree studies at Unisa can apply a�er completing this programme.

Programme in Marketing and Marketing

Research*

The objective of the programme is to offer training in marketing and marketing research. The programme is practical, geared to South African conditions and occupation oriented.

The following people would benefit from the programme:  persons involved in marketing products and services in

business and financial institutions  marketing researchers

 advertising practitioners

 managers/owners of small businesses  sales representatives

 persons who wish to make a career of marketing, advertising and/or marketing research

Admission requirements: Senior Certificate or an equivalent

qualification.

Duration of study: The programme can be completed in a minimum period of one year. Students are, however, advised to spread their studies over two years.

Course in Taxation

OBJECTIVE

With the exception of specialised areas, the course covers the entire field of taxation. The objective of the course is to enable students to calculate the tax of individuals in employment and those involved in various types of enterprises, as well as those of companies, close corporations and trusts.

Target group: The benefits of this course will be enjoyed inter alia, by those who are employed, the holders of public office, sole traders, partners in partnership, farmers and those involved in smaller businesses with a more formal business structure such as a close corporation or company.

Admission requirements: Senior certificate or equivalent qualification or appropriate experience in taxation

Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced

Taxation

OBJECTIVES

The Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Taxation has been designed to provide the student with a solid foundation and an in-depth knowledge of the legal principles to enable him/her to provide professional advice to clients and to perform advanced tax planning on their behalf. The certificate is classified as being at the same level as an honours degree conferred by the University.

Target group: Persons involved in accounting and/or auditing practices, tax consultants, public officers of companies, Inland Revenue officials, lecturers at universities, technikons or similar institutions and legal practitioners

Course in Intermediate Financial

Accounting

OBJECTIVES

This course offers further tuition and more advanced applications in financial accounting to candidates who have a reasonable knowledge of fundamental accounting.

This course primarily focuses on financial reporting by companies and evaluation of the operating results and the financial position of business concerns.

OBJECTIVES

The primary objective of the course is to prepare students to meet the accounting demands of the information age. The course will provide students with a thorough understanding of essential accounting concepts, and teach them to apply these concepts in a computerised accounting environment.
