Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks – Rocks that form from the changing of existing rocks by heat pressure or both.

1) Heat from magma causes minerals to grow larger. . . . Heat causes minerals in the rock to become unstable allowing the minerals to migrate together = larger mineral crystals.

2) Pressure, from tectonic plates moving or from the weight of layers on top, causes minerals to line up in bands or layers. 3) Two types of Meta Rx: Foliated and Nonfoliated

A) Foliated Metamorphic Rx. – Meta Rx with mineral bands or layers.

Foliated Meta Rx

Rx Name Rock formed from Amount of change Slate Shale SMALL – microscopic

muscovite/biotite

minerals began to reform giving it a slightly shiny

surface.

Phyllite Shale MEDIUM- tiny muscovite/biotite minerals have

reformed giving it a definite shiny surface.

Schistvarious (often shale) LARGE – minerals in the rock completely reform

and can easily be seen. Gneiss Granite LARGE

B) Nonfoliate Metamorphic Rx – Nonbanded metamorphic rocks.

+ Usually formed from existing rocks that have only one mineral.

nonFoliated Meta Rx

Rx Name Rock formed from Minerals Marble Limestone, Calcite

Dolomite

Quartzite Sandstone Quartz

C) Regional Metamorphism – Metamorphic change that occurs over a large area of the crust.

+ Commonly associated with mountain building processes.
