Abstract

LetEbe a real normed linear space, letKbe a nonempty convex subset ofE, and let T:KEbe a uniformly continuous

-pseudo-contractive-type mapping. It is proved that both the Mann-type and Ishikawa-type iteration schemes converge strongly to the unique fixed point ofT, without requiring that the sequences associated with the schemes be bounded. Our theorems are significant improvements on the results of Changet al.(Iterative methods for nonlinear operators in Banach spaces, 2002), those of Gu (Northeast Math. J. 17(3):340-346, 2001), and those of a host of other authors.

1 Introduction

LetEbe a real normed linear space. A mappingJ:E→E∗defined by

Jx:=x∗∈E∗:x,x∗=xx∗,x∗=x,xE,

where·,·denotes the duality pairing between the elements ofEand those ofE∗, is called the normalized duality map onE. IfE∗is strictly convex, thenJis single-valued (see,e.g., [] or []). An operatorA:D(A)⊆EEis calledstrongly accretiveif there exists some

k>  such that for eachx,yD(A), there existsj(xy)∈J(xy) such that

AxAy,j(xy)≥kxy. (.)

The mapping Ais said to be strongly φ-accretiveif there exists a strictly increasing functionφ : [,∞)→[,∞) with φ() =  such that for any x,yD(A), there exists

j(xy)∈J(xy) satisfying

AxAy,j(xy)≥φxyxy. (.)

The mappingAis calledgeneralized-accretiveif there exists a strictly increasing func-tion: [,∞)→[,∞) with() =  such that for anyx,yD(A), there existsj(xy)∈

(2)

J(xy) satisfying

AxAy,j(xy)≥xy. (.)

It is well known that the class of generalized-accretive mappings includes the class of stronglyφ-accretive operators as a special case (one sets(s) =(s) for alls∈[,∞)).

LetN(A) :={xE:Ax= } =∅. The mappingAis calledstrongly quasi-accretiveif there existsk∈(, ) such that for allxD(A),x∗∈N(A), there existsj(xx∗)∈J(xx∗) satis-fying

AxAx∗,jxx∗≥kxx∗; (.)

A is called strongly φ-quasi-accretive if there exists a strictly increasing function φ : [,∞)→[,∞) withφ() =  such that for allxD(A),x∗∈N(A), there existsj(xx∗)∈

J(xx∗) satisfying

AxAx∗,jxx∗≥φxxxx∗. (.)

Finally,Ais calledgeneralized-quasi-accretiveif there exists a strictly increasing func-tion: [,∞)→[,∞) with () =  such that for allxE,x∗ ∈N(A), there exists

j(xx∗)∈J(xx∗) satisfying

AxAx∗,jxx∗≥xx∗. (.)

A mappingT:EEis calledstrongly pseudo-contractiveif for allx,yE, the following inequality holds:

xy ≤( +r)(xy) –rt(TxTy) (.)

forall r>  andsome t> . Ift=  in inequality (.), thenTis calledpseudo-contractive. The relation between the class of accretive-type mappings and those ofpseudo-contractive typeis contained in the following proposition.

Proposition . A mapping T:EE is strongly pseudo-contractive if and only if(IT)

is strongly accretive,and is stronglyφ-pseudo-contractive if and only if(IT)is strongly

φ-accretive.The mapping T is generalized-pseudo-contractive if and only if(IT)is generalized-accretive.

Proposition . If F(T) :={xE:Tx=x} =∅,the mapping T is strongly hemi-contractive if and only if(IT)is strongly quasi-accretive;it isφ-hemi-contractive if and only if(IT)

is stronglyφ-quasi-accretive;and T is generalized-hemi-contractive if and only if(IT)

is generalized-quasi-accretive.

Numerous convergence results have been proved on iterative methods for approximat-ing zeros of Lipschitz-strongly accretive type (or fixed points of-strongly pseudo-contractive type) nonlinear mappings and their stability (see, e.g., Chang et al. [], Chidume [, ], Chidume and Zegeye [], Deng and Ding [], Shahzad and Zegeye [] and the references contained therein). Also, many authors have proved convergence the-orems under the assumption that these operators havebounded range(see,e.g., Browder and Petryshyn [], Hirano and Huang [] and the references contained therein).

Some of these results have been extended to uniformly continuous mappings. The most general results for uniformly continuous-pseudo-contractive-type andφ -hemi-contractive-type mappings seem to be the following theorems (see also [], Chapter ).

Theorem G([], Theorem .) Let E be a real normed linear space,let K be a nonempty subset of E,and let T:KE be a uniformly continuous-pseudo-contractive-type oper-ator,i.e.,there exist x∗∈K and a strictly increasing function: [,∞)→[,∞),() = 

such that for all xK,there exists j(xx∗)∈J(xx∗)satisfying

Txx∗,jxx∗≤xx∗–xx∗. (.)

(a)If y∗∈K is a fixed point of T,then y∗=x∗,and so T has at most one fixed point in K; (b)Suppose that there exists x∈K such that both the Ishikawa iterative sequence{xn}with error and the auxiliary sequence{yn}defined by

yn= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+vn, n≥, (.)

xn+= ( –αn)xn+αnTyn+un, (.)

are contained in K,where{un}, {vn} are two sequences in E and {αn}, {βn} are two se-quences in[, ]satisfying the following conditions: (i)αn,βn→ (n→ ∞)and αn=∞; (ii) un=o(αn)andvn → (n→ ∞).If{xn}is a bounded sequence in K,then{xn}

converges strongly to x∗.In particular,if yis a fixed point of T in K,then{xn}converges strongly to y∗.

Theorem G([], Theorem .) Let E be a real normed linear space,let K be a nonempty

subset of E such that K +KK.Let T :KK be a uniformly continuous -pseudo-contractive-type operator.

Let{un},{vn},{αn},{βn}be as in TheoremG.For any given x∈K,the Ishikawa iterative sequence{xn}with errors is defined as in TheoremG. (a)If y∗∈K is a fixed point of T,

then y∗=x∗,and so T has at most one fixed point in K; (b)If{xn}is a bounded sequence,

then{xn}converges strongly to x∗.In particular,if yis a fixed point of T in K,then{xn} converges strongly to y∗.

Theorem CCZ ([], Theorem ..) Let E be a real normed linear space, let K be a nonempty convex subset of E such that K +KK,and let T :KK be a uniformly continuous andφ-hemi-contractive mapping.Let{αn},{βn}be two real sequences in(, )

satisfying the following conditions: (i)αn,βn→ (n→ ∞); (ii) αn=∞.Assume that {un},{vn}are two sequences in K satisfying the following conditions:un=u

sequences{un},{un}in K with un<∞;un=o(αn)andvn →as n→ ∞.Define

the Ishikawa iterative sequence with mixed errors in K by

yn= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+vn, n≥, (.)

xn+= ( –αn)xn+αnTyn+un. (.)

If{Tyn}is bounded,then the sequence{xn}converges strongly to the unique fixed point of T.

Theorem CCZ([], Theorem ..) Let E be a real normed linear space,and let T:E

E be a uniformly continuous and stronglyφ-quasi-accretive mapping.Let{αn},{βn}be two real sequences in(, )satisfying the following conditions:

(i) αn,βn→ (n→ ∞); (ii)

αn=∞.

Let{un},{vn}be as in TheoremCCZ.Define a mapping S:EE by Sx:=xTx for each xE.For an arbitrary x∈E,define the Ishikawa iterative sequence{xn}with mixed errors by

yn= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+vn, n≥, (.)

xn+= ( –αn)xn+αnTyn+un. (.)

If{Syn}is bounded,then the sequence{xn}converges strongly to the unique fixed point of T.

Remark . Theorems G, G, CCZ and CCZ are important generalizations of several results. We observe that the class of mappings considered in Theorems CCZ and CCZ is aproper subclassof the class of mappings studied in Theorems G and G in which (s) =(s). However, the requirement that{xn}be bounded imposed in Theorems G and G is stronger than the requirement that{Tyn}or{Syn}be bounded imposed in Theorems CCZ and CCZ, respectively.

In Theorems G and G of [], convergence of{xn}under other conditions of the the-orems is guaranteed if the sequence{xn}is bounded.

Remark . Similarly, the sequence{xn}defined in Theorem CCZ is guaranteed to con-verge if{Tyn} is bounded. Finally, the sequence{xn} defined in CCZ is guaranteed to converge if {Syn}is bounded. The requirements that{xn},{Tyn}and{Syn} be bounded before convergence in these theorems is guaranteed is a huge constraint in any possible application of these theorems. The verifications that these sequences are bounded are, in general, very difficult.

2 Preliminaries

In the sequel, we shall make use of the following results.

Lemma . Let E be a real normed linear space,and let J:E→Ebe the normalized

duality map.Then,for any x,yE,there exists j(x+y)∈J(x+y)such that the following inequality holds:

x+y≤ x+ y,j(x+y). (.)

Lemma .(Chidume and Chidume, []) Let X and Y be real normed linear spaces,and let T:XY be uniformly continuous.For arbitrary r> and fixed x∗∈X,let

BX

x∗,r:=xX:xx∗≤r.

Then T(B(x∗,r))is bounded.

Since this lemma is new and is yet to be published, we reproduce its short proof here.

Proof By uniform continuity ofT and by taking= , there existsδ>  such that for all

x,yX,

xy<δTxTy< .

Forr> , letzB(x∗,r) be arbitrary. Choosen∈Nfixed such thatr<nδ.

By uniform continuity ofT,Tzk+–Tzk< . Furthermore,

Tz=Tzn ≤ Tzn–Tzn–+Tzn––Tzn–+· · ·

+Tz–Tz+Tz ≤n+Tz.

Hence,T(B(x∗,r)) is bounded.

Theorem . Let E be a real normed linear space,let K be a nonempty subset of E,and let T :KE be a uniformly continuous-pseudo-contractive-type operator.Suppose that

{xn}n=is as defined in TheoremG,then there existsγ> such that ifαn,βn,unαnγ ∀n≥,then{xn}is bounded.

Proof We have

yn= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+vn,

(6)

Letx∈Kbe as defined in Theorem G withx=x∗. Define

a:=x–Tx ·x–x∗+  > .

Then from (.) we obtain thatx–x∗ ≤–(a).

Observe that since{un}n=and{vn}n=are bounded,un,vnB(x∗,r)n≥ for somer> . Let

Claim xnx∗ ≤–(a)∀n≥.

The proof of this claim is by induction. Clearly it holds for n= . Assume it holds for somen≥,i.e.,xnx∗ ≤–(a). We prove thatxn+–x∗ ≤–(a).

Sup-pose this is not the case. Thenxn+–x∗> –(a). This implies that(xn+–x∗) >

(–(a )).

We compute as follows:

xn+–x∗≤xnx∗+αnxnTyn+un

xn+–yn ≤ xn+–xn+xnyn ≤γM+γ(M+γ)

Hence,Txn+–Tyn<. Now,

Hence,xn+–x∗<xnx∗ ≤–(a), a contradiction. So,{xn}is bounded.

Corollary .(Theorem G ([], Theorem .)) Let E be a real normed linear space,let K be a nonempty subset of E,and let T:KE be a uniformly continuous -pseudo-contractive-type operator, i.e., there exist x∗ ∈K and a strictly increasing function: [,∞)→[,∞),() = such that for all xK,there exists j(xx∗)∈J(xx∗) satis-fying

are contained in K,where{un},{vn}are two sequences in E and{αn},{βn}are two sequences in [, ]satisfying the following conditions: (i)αn,βn→ (n→ ∞)and αn=∞; (ii) un=o(αn)andvn → (n→ ∞).Then there existsγ> such that ifαn,βn,unαnγ ∀n≥,{xn}converges strongly to x∗.In particular,if yis a fixed point of T in K,then{xn} converges strongly to y∗.

Proof Observe that Corollary . is the same as Theorem G without boundedness as-sumption on the sequence{xn}but with the assumption that there existsγ>  such that

αn,βn,unαnγ∀n≥ made in Corollary .. The proof that{xn}is bounded follows from Theorem .. The rest of the proof of convergence is as in Theorem G. This completes

(8)

Theorem . Let E be a real normed linear space,let K be a nonempty convex subset of E such that K+KK,and let T:KK be a uniformly continuous andφ-hemi-contractive mapping.Suppose that{xn}n=is as defined in TheoremCCZ [],then there existsγ>  such that ifαn,βn,unαnγ∀n≥,{Tyn}is bounded.

Proof The boundedness of{xn}in Theorem . follows as in Theorem .. Since{xn}is bounded, by Lemma . and the uniform continuity ofT,{Txn}is bounded. This with the boundedness of{vn}implies, from the relationyn:= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+cnVn, that{yn}is bounded. Again, by the uniform continuity ofT and Lemma .,{Tyn}is bounded.

Corollary . (Theorem CCZ, []) Let E be a real normed linear space, let K be a nonempty convex subset of E such that K +KK,and let T :KK be a uniformly continuous andφ-hemi-contractive mapping.Let{αn},{βn}be two real sequences in(, )

satisfying the following conditions: (i)αn,βn→ (n→ ∞); (ii) αn=∞.Assume that {un},{vn}are two sequences in K satisfying the following conditions:un=u

nfor any

sequences{un},{un} in K with un<∞;un=o(αn)andvn →as n→ ∞.Define

the Ishikawa iterative sequence with mixed errors in K by

yn= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+vn, n≥, (.)

xn+= ( –αn)xn+αnTyn+un. (.)

If{Tyn} is bounded, then the sequence{xn}converges strongly to the unique fixed point of T.

Proof Corollary . is the same as Theorem CCZ but without boundedness assump-tion on the sequence{Tyn} but with the assumption that there existsγ>  such that

αn,βn,unαnγ∀n≥ made in Corollary .. The proof that{Tyn}is bounded follows from Theorem .. The remaining proof of convergence is as in Theorem CCZ. This

completes the proof.

Theorem . Let E be a real normed linear space,and T:EE be a uniformly contin-uous and stronglyφ-quasi-accretive mapping.Define a mapping S:EE by Sx:=xTx for each xE.Suppose that{xn}is as defined in TheoremCCZ [],then there existsγ>  such that ifαn,βn,unαnγ∀n≥,{Syn}is bounded.

Proof Syn:=ynTyn. Using the boundedness of {yn} and {Tyn}, we have that{Syn} is

bounded.

Corollary .(Theorem CCZ, []) Let E be a real normed linear space,and let T:EE be a uniformly continuous and stronglyφ-quasi-accretive mapping.Let{αn},{βn}be two real sequences in(, )satisfying the following conditions:

(i) αn,βn→ (n→ ∞); (ii)

αn=∞.

(9)

errors by

yn= ( –βn)xn+βnTxn+vn, n≥, (.)

xn+= ( –αn)xn+αnTyn+un. (.)

If{Syn}is bounded,then the sequence{xn}converges strongly to the unique fixed point of T.

Proof Corollary . is the same as Theorem CCZ without boundedness assumption on the sequence{Syn}but with the assumption that there existsγ>  such thatαn,βn,unαnγ∀n≥ made in Corollary .. The proof that{Syn}is bounded follows from

Theo-rem .. The rest of the proof of convergence is as in TheoTheo-rem CCZ. This completes the

proof.

Remark . Theorem . shows that Theorems G and G remain valid without the re-quirement that{xn}be bounded. Also, it shows that Theorems CCZ and CCZ remain valid without the requirement that{Tyn}and{Syn}be bounded, respectively.

Remark . Part of the aim of includingboundederror terms in recursion formulas of

Theorem . and Corollaries . and . is to illustrate the fact that if the theorems are proved without these error terms, then addition of bounded error terms in the recursion formulas leads to no generalization. The proof in the case with error terms is in general an unnecessary repetition of the proof using recursion formulas without error terms (see Chapter  of []).

Prototype An example of iteration parameters satisfying the conditions of our theorems is as follows:

αn=βn= γ

n, n≥.
