overview

it is increasingly inefficient and expensive for utility iT departments to own, operate, and maintain all of the infrastructure and software needed to run their business from a physical location. This is largely due to the massive volume of data being collected by their organizations through the grid and their customers, as well as their desire to analyze this data to inform better decisions and make business improvements.

Looking for new, efficient and affordable storage and computing options is the new imperative, and the cloud is an attractive solution for a growing number of utilities. Cloud computing shifts the management and storage of data from circuits and cables — that reside in an organization’s brick-and-mortar location — to an ‘invisible’, pay-as-you-go network of remote servers, hosted on the internet through a third party provider.

Despite the proven benefits of leveraging technologies, increasing efficiency and cost reduction that cloud computing can bring to utilities that deploy this cloud computing strategy, many power organizations are still cautious to trust the cloud out of security and privacy concerns.

This webinar will explain the cloud in the context of the utility industry. it will also describe the benefits and risks, both perceived and real. Utility and technology experts will discuss the prioritization of categories of cloud-based initiatives from low to high risk and low to high reward, and they will shed light into determining a utility’s cloud maturity. They will also provide self-assessment recommendations so that utilities can answer for themselves the question, “What’s next?”
