APICS Colorado Adopt a Family

Program for the Holidays

With the events of the past several months, I believe there will be more need than ever for our APICS Colorado Christmas Adopt a Family Program. Many corporate sponsors were forced to freeze funds this year due to their own business situation due to the pandemic. Our Colorado Chapter will be sponsoring our Adopt a Family program to help brighten up the holidays for local children. In 2019 we were able to provide gifts to 217 local

children from 72 families with 100% fulfillment! If you or your company

would like to donate time and or dollars that would be fantastic. Last year, for every dollar donated, we turned it into $1.6 dollars under the tree!

We will be NOT be having our annual wrapping party in December. We have a safe plan for shopping, sorting, wrapping and delivering. Elves, who volunteer to help, will pick up gifts in Lakewoord for a family. The gifts will be bagged for each child separately. The Elves will take the bags home and wrap the gifts according to “Roger’s Rules” and then deliver to the family or families prior to 12/24/2020. This is a less social approach. This is a leaner approach, eliminating several handling steps in the routing. Self-assessment of quality will be in action. This is a safe process for all this year. I will miss seeing you all at this annual wrapping event, that has happened each year for almost 3 decades. As a team, we will safely accomplish this important mission and truly feel the holiday experience. Please let me know if you would like to help.

Education News

Hello, Everyone – The first vestiges of spring happened while I wasn’t looking and now we are neigh on full summer. I have noticed a definite increase in interest to complete APICS certifications while some folks find themselves with a bit more time to attend online classes, read, and prepare for the exams!

Coach’s Corner

We are in the middle of the holiday season and many are not feeling the holiday spirit. 2020 has been a tough year for most of us professionally and/or personally. I know some days I don’t feel like celebrating anything. I think that many of us have the “pandemic blues” from time to time. If you sit down and think about it, most of us have a lot to be thankful for and to celebrate, even with the chaos going on around us. Am I glad to see 2020 go?………..Yes, it cannot be gone quick enough for me. We all need to manage our way through these times for ourselves, our families and our friends the best we can. I suggest going outside every day and getting some fresh air, getting some exercise each day, doing something you really like to do at least for a few minutes each day and of course looking at the world as a glass half full instead of half empty.

The BOD’s of the Colorado Chapter are going to do everything we can to help you stay current on Supply Chain topics and help you to network virtually as well as we can.

Our Winter / Spring 2021 plans will include full sessions of CPIM, CLTD, CSCP, Lean and S&OP courses. We will have Dinner Meetings/Network sessions Jan-May 2021 and some tours as well. We will continue in a virtual mode until at least March 2021. A lot to choose from to stay involved and get information on Supply Chain Management.

As I said elsewhere in this newsletter, we are going forward with a safe plan to help many children in the area have a better Christmas season. I just want to say ahead of time that I appreciate all of the support you have given in time and finances in the past and already this holiday season. Thank you!

Thank you for being part of the Colorado APICS Chapter. Please let me know if you have questions or need something from the Chapter.

I want to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy, Healthy, Safe New Year 2021!

Roger Harris, CFPIM, CIRM, C.P.M., PMP, CSCP, CPSM, CLTD President & Coach, Colorado APICS Chapter

Thank you for being part of the Colorado APICS Chapter. Please let me know if you have questions or need something from the Chapter.

Education News

Happy holidays to each of you!

I hope the end of this year finds you well. What a bumpy ride 2020 has been!

As we head into the New Year, be sure to mark your calendars for upcoming Colorado APICS courses! See the 2021 scheduled dates in the following newsletter pages.

We’ve added a Lean Enterprise Workshop to the roster beginning in mid-February, as well. We are offering a full slate of classes early in 2021. CPIM begins in February for Part 1 and March for Part 2. CLTD and CSCP begin in March and our new Sales & Operations Planning course is planned for April.

With everyone’s safety in mind, we will continue with the online format for all of our Colorado APICS classes until we are entirely comfortable that face-to-face meetings pose no risk.

Saturday classes continue to be our most requested format, but we know that it may not meet every organization’s needs. If it is better for you and your company to hold classes during the week, please contact me and we can discuss private course options.

If you are preparing for your CPIM exams soon, PLEASE NOTE: A new version of CPIM (7.0) will be released in 2021. Please consider the following dates as you prepare for your CPIM exams:

Both CPIM EXAM versions (Current 6.0 and New 7.0) will be available through April 2022

 March 30, 2021 - Last day to purchase the current CPIM (Version 6.0) Exam Credit  September 30, 2021 – Last day to purchase CPIM 6.0 Approval To Test (ATT)

 April 2, 2022 – CPIM 6.0 Exam is discontinued

Contact me directly to request your Exam Credit or if you have questions on the CPIM exam transition. As always, if you or anyone you know have any questions on APICS Education please contact me. My best wishes to you & your families for a peaceful Christmas & Hanukkah.

And more than anything, I wish you each a Healthy & Happy New Year. Honey

Shortly after I took the CPIM classes and certified, now several years later it seems time to expand my knowledge and certification with CSCP. In my current position the knowledge I have acquired through CSCP has been extremely helpful in balancing the lead times and costs associated with bringing everything together. "Enrolling in and attending the Colorado APICS Chapter classes that accommodate the material in preparation for taking the CPIM exams was extremely beneficial for me. Roger & Honey do a fantastic job of giving real life examples of the topics discussed, which can be extremely useful in some of the broader subjects like the ones found in SMR, that aren't as straight forward on paper as some of the other topics. They also are very good about hitting the highlights and main points within each topic, which really helps breakdown and digest the material better." Carter Henderson, CPIM, Demand Planner

& S&OP Process Manager, Innospec, Inc.

“I’d like to thank Roger Harris and Honey Johnson for their outstanding effort in delivering the APICS CPIM classes. Their presentation and materials go beyond what I would have ever received without them and definitely contributed to my passing both Part 1 and Part 2 CPIM exams. On a final note, both Roger and Honey made the classes fun and interesting, adding much color to the class materials” Jeff Lane, CPIM, Operations, Supply Chain & Information Systems Professional

"I was privileged to be include in the first class for the APICS Certification in Logistics, Distribution and Transportation in Denver Colorado. This class was my introduction to this discipline. The instructors were knowledgeable, helpful and dedicated in getting the subject matter across not just to pass an exam but on how to use this information to improve a business. Even though this is the first of its kind class in Colorado and was also pretty much my introduction to Logistics, Distribution and Transportation it provided me the knowledge and insight to pass the certification exam on my first try.” Ken Fiore, CPIM,

““I recently completed the excellent S&OP training class offered through ASCM Colorado Chapter. About 1 year

ago my company began a formal S&OP process, and I was asked to take on the facilitator role. Although I’ve been exposed to S&OP concepts, I found the training class covered essential fundamentals that reinforced and strengthened by understanding. The learning environment created a solid forum to discuss specifics about our business and how the S&OP process can be more effective. The course pacing allowed time to absorb material and understand the critical factors to ensure S&OP success. I took away several important changes to implement in the S&OP process which will strengthen my company’s bottom line! This course was the same high quality product I’ve come to know ASCM Colorado Chapter to offer, and I speak from experience holding my CPIM and CSCP training through the chapter classes!” Tony Fabrizio, CPIM, CSCP, Business Analytics Manager, General

What are Students saying about APICS

Education in Colorado?

“Even though my position is far from the production line, I am able to see how I can implement some of these principals when dealing with internal stakeholders I work with. I am also able to apply this at home as well. I think this class will greatly help us to speed up our order processing and help us to eliminate unnecessary waste. Super excited to finally be working towards my certification. Thanks again.” Daniel Cummings, Business Process Analyst/Customer Solutions,

Danone North America

“It (S&OP Class) was fantastic. I think it was a huge eye opener for everyone involved, and showed us a lot of gaps we have where we need to focus our efforts. I’ve received nothing but positive feedback on the class so far. Everyone is really getting a lot from it.” Rachael LaFollette, CPIM, Supply Chain Planning Manager, AlloSource

“Getting involved with APICS opened up several opportunities my career. I was able to start taking classes for my CLTD certification during graduate school which helped me secure a supply chain internship with my current company. The classes not only prepared me for my exams, but enabled me to network with other professionals with similar interests. APICS Colorado is a great organization that seeks to promote the importance of supply chains through education, but also gives back to the community that supports them.” Aaron Goldschmidt, CLTD, Supply Chain Manager, Gates Corporation

“I am currently taking the CPIM online course taught by Roger Harris and Honey Johnson. While this course is full of material, both instructors go above and beyond to ensure proper understanding of all the material that is being covered. Each class brings direct knowledge to many different high level supply chain practices that can directly reflect to many different job titles and positions. With the understanding of this material, I believe that this course sets each student up for much success in many different career areas. I am thankful for the time that both Roger and Honey take to ensure that all students are keeping track with the high speed material that is covered. This course is great for a very wide range of business practices and I am certain that it will only help to expand on my own personal career path. I believe that this online structure is greatly suited for success in passing the CPIM test that follows.” Brian Robles, Supply Chain Professional

“I would like to thank Roger Harris and Honey Johnson for their dedication in the APICS CPIM classes. I did the self-study on the CPIM Part 1 and passed, so I attempted the self-self-study on the CPIM part 2. I scored a 299 and failed. I got right back on it and was studying again, and I could just not get my head into it. I discovered the classes with Roger and Honey and decided it would be worth the 8 Saturdays to become CPIM certified. I found the classes kept my attention and kept me on track better than learning on my own and found myself immediately using what I learned in my job. Roger and Honey kept the classes very entertaining and used real life scenarios to teach each subject which helps the students grasp the materials better. I took the CPIM part 2 immediately after the class and passed with room to spare. I think the classes were very much worth the time and the money and would recommend them to become certified.” Dorothy Monsees, CPIM, Buyer/Planner, Nordson Medical

The Membership Spotlight

How did you first get involved with APICS?

While completing my MBA at the University of Connecticut we re-established the dormant Operations Management Club, and looked for ways to add value to the graduate experience. The best thing we did was engage with professional organizations to accelerate our learning and integration into future job roles. APICS was one of the three organizations that we affiliated with, creating a student chapter. We even entered and won a case competition later that same year.

What have you found most enjoyable about being an APICS member?

Definitely the company tours. That was eye-opening for me as a graduate student with no manufacturing experience. I knew I wanted to get into aerospace, and I think getting some early looks at just-in-time and lean production systems in the Hartford area really gave me a leg up when I started as a program manager after graduation.

Unfortunately, the APICS chapters in Vermont and Boston, where I moved next in my career, were not nearly as active. So I was pleasantly surprised to see such an active chapter in Denver. I also realized that reinvesting in my CPIM certification and knowledge would benefit me in my new position at Sierra Nevada Corporation.

How do you fill your free time (hobbies, family, etc.)?

I’m a pretty avid skier, having been a certified professional ski instructor for the past 21 years. My wife and I relocated from New England to get back to the “big” mountains out West, where we first met. I’ve also been a very active member of the Navy Reserve, having commanded five Reserve units, deployed overseas six times, and served for over 26 years.

What’s next for you now?

Last fall, on day one of my new job, at a new company, after having moved across country … I was notified by the Navy Reserve I was being mobilized in three months. Somewhat ironically our mission with the International Maritime Security Construct was to monitor maritime security, provide assurance to merchants, and enable the free flow of shipping in the key waterways of the Middle East.

Partway through my deployment I started exploring ways to prepare for reintegration into my civilian occupation. I studied for and recently retook the CPIM exams, regained my CPIM, and completed my CSCP.

The last year has been a bit of a whirlwind. I am looking forward to getting back to my job, applying my knowledge (new and old), family life, and a full ski season!
