Remember, your application will be assessed based on the information that you provide us with. Processing of your application will be interrupted if we need to come back to you for missing information.

WHAT IS THE ZERO FEES SCHEME?
The Zero Fees Scheme means we do not charge tuition fees. However, there is a Student Direct Material Cost that you need to pay and an administration fee. The administration fee is for processing your application and the Student Direct Material Cost gives you secure access to Blackboard® our online learning environment and to student support services throughout your study with us.
WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE ZERO FEES SCHEME?
A New Zealand citizen completing the full qualification or An Australian citizen/New Zealand Resident or Permanent Resident who is currently living in New Zealand and completing the full qualification.
INSTRUCTIONS TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR APPLICATION:
1. Read the attached Programme Fact Sheet and the SIT2LRN FAQs on the SIT website and find out if you meet the application criteria for both the programme and the unit/s you wish to study.
2. Check your eligibility for Zero Fees. If you are not eligible to study under this scheme, please call 0800 748 257 for further options.
3. Fill in the attached Flexible Learning Application Form & Enrolment Contract checking that: a. If you are a returning student you:

Attach photo identification (this must be a copy of your driver’s licence, passport or 18+ card).
This does not need to be verified.
Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page, and the completed checklist. b. If you are a new student you:
Fill in all sections of the application form.
Attach a copy of your verified ID (a copy of either your birth certificate or passport which has been stamped and signed by any one of the following JP, Barrister, Court Deputy Registrar, Member of Parliament, Land Transport NZ, Public Trust, member of the New Zealand Police, School Principal, Minister of Religion or GP).
Attach all academic documentation to support your application including copies of any certificates of courses you have undertaken / NZQA record of achievement / transcripts / CV. Attach supporting documents, as outlined on the previous page, including letter of intent, and
the completed checklist.
4. Remember to sign and date the application form and check it one last time to confirm you have included all the required information and supporting documents. Your application will be assessed based on the
information that you provide.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
You will receive acknowledgement confirming that we have received your application. Processing may take up to three weeks, however we will get in touch with you sooner if we require further
documentation.
Once your application has been accepted you will be sent a conditional offer of acceptance with an invoice and instructions on how to make payment.
Once we have received your payment (or if you have opted to pay by Student Loan or Purchase Order) you will be sent an Enrolment Confirmation Letter and Important Information Booklet. Closer to the start of the intake you will receive a Time To Get Started Letter which will give you all the necessary

PROGRAMME AIM
The programme will allow students to: Gain skills and knowledge that are directly
relevant to working or further training in the health sciences sector;
Demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate;
Develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the health sciences sector.
GRADUATE OUTCOME STATEMENT
Graduates from this programme will have gained an introduction to health studies and developed skills and knowledge for further tertiary study in health related areas.
Graduates will be prepared for further study in the Certificate in Health Sciences (Intermediate) (Level 4).
APPLICATION CRITERIA
All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in health sciences and academic attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme.
School leavers:
Minimum of 18 years of age, with a minimum of three years secondary education;
A minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 2 in each of four subjects.
Mature students are also welcome to apply.
ASSESSMENTS
Assessments for this programme include online tests and written, short answer assessments. There are no external exams for this programme.

PROGRAMME CONTENT
Please note: This programme is made up of local units,
rather than unit standards. Local units are written by SIT. They will not show on your NZQA Record of Learning, however the overall course is NZQA accredited. Upon completion students will receive a SIT qualification/transcript with a list of local units, levels, credits, and grades.
HSC101 - Normal human structure and function in a health context (Level 4) 5 credits
People credited with this unit are able to describe normal human structure and function in a health context.
HSC102 - Abnormal human structure and function in a health context (Level 4) 5 credits
People credited with this unit are able to describe abnormal structure and function of the human system, complementary philosophies, and a range of health care interventions.
PEH103 - Human biology (Level 3) 6 credits
People credited with this unit are able to demonstrate knowledge of the ten major human body systems (cells and tissues; musculoskeletal; digestive; respiratory; circulatory; urinary; reproductive; endocrine; integumentary), and integrate this knowledge.
PEH104 - Scientific notations and units (Level 3) 3 credits
People credited with this unit are able to: demonstrate knowledge of basic Système International (SI) units of measurement; understand the derived units used by laboratories and the corresponding quantities; demonstrate knowledge of quantity calculations; and use formulae to solve problems.
PEH109 - Work safely in a science laboratory (Level 3) 2 credits
People credited with this unit are able to identify and describe hazard in the laboratory and follow laboratory procedures for health and safety practices.
A visit to a scientific laboratory is recommended for this unit.
PEH110 - Describe ethical behaviour in a health, disability, or community setting (Level 3) 3 credits
People credited with this unit are able to describe consumer rights and ethical behaviour in a health, disability, or community setting.
PEH111 - Describe relationships between
practitioners, and roles and responsibilities in group processes in a health care context (Level 4) 4 credits
People credited with this unit are able to describe professional relationships between health care practitioners, and roles and responsibilities in group processes within a health care context.
PEH 112 - Number and measurement (Level 3) 7 credits
People credited with this unit will be provided with a body of functional mathematic skills. You will learn how to apply the four basic rules of arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions and decimals and how to apply the metric system of measurement.
PEH113 - Demonstrate knowledge of cultural identities and culture-related issues in an aged care, health, or disability context (Level 3) 6 credits
People credited with this unit are able to describe: their own cultural identity and its influence on their own work practices; other cultural identities and their influence on work practices; and policies, procedures, and resources used to assist in responding to culture-related issues, in an aged care, health, or disability context.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)
Students who have previously completed any NZQA unit standards relating to the above papers can apply to have the unit(s) recognised on their record of learning at SIT. This is done by filling in a ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ (RPL) application form and attaching proof of achievement. The RPL application form is available on MySIT or from the Programme Administrator.
CROSS CREDITS
Once completed, HSC101 and HSC102 can be cross credited into the Certificate in Health Sciences (Intermediate) programme. This is done by filling in a cross credit application form. The form is available on MySIT or from the Programme Administrator. Please attach the completed form to your application.
SUGGESTED STUDY PATH/COMBINATIONS
Full time study:
Full time study is completing all nine papers (41 credits) in one intake. This is roughly 34 hours of study per week. Full time acceptance into the programme is at the Programme Manager’s discretion.
Part time study:
The number of credits selected per intake should depend on work, family, and other commitments. Learners may complete the papers in any order. All papers must be completed in order to complete the qualification. Part time students are able to negotiate assignment due dates (within reason) within the intake, as the timetable is designed for full time students. You must contact your facilitator at the beginning of the intake to arrange this.

LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENT
The Tertiary Education Commission requires all learners enrolled in programmes at Levels 1 - 3 to complete literacy and numeracy testing. This is a Level 3 programme and therefore you will be required to complete at least one reading and one numeracy assessment during the course of your studies. Your facilitator will provide you with further details during your study.

The Southern Institute of Technology recognises the need for a recovery. The provision of Zero Fees tertiary programmes has enhanced educational opportunities for all students including non-traditional users of tertiary education.
Zero Fees allows New Zealand or Australian citizens or permanent residents the opportunity to study approved programmes without paying the tuition fees.
Zero Fees, where available, applies only to the base tuition fee attached to each programme of study. Particular programmes may incur additional costs to the students, for example: uniform, texts, tools, activities, NZQA charges.
Programmes that are o ered under Zero Fees are:
Tertiary Education Commission funded (you must be a New Zealand or Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to receive Tertiary Education Commission funding). Of twelve or more weeks in duration. Studied either full time or part time. Leading to a national
- Zero Fees applies to all approved programmes. Christchurch campus - Zero Fees applies to most programmes. SIT2LRN distance programmes - Zero Fees applies to all programmes.
(Zero Fees is available) as a result of present Government policies. Although not foreseen, SIT is unable to guarantee ongoing Zero
Fees provision should for any reason present funding arrangements and/or Government policies be reviewed.
In Order to retain the Zero Fees, students undertaking a programme of study at Southern Institute of Technology must meet the following criteria: •

• In any case of a breach of the terms and conditions, and after due notice. the Zero Fees status may be withdrawn. In this situation, if a student wishes and is eligible to continue in an enrolled programme of study after this has been withdrawn, he/she will than be liable for the pro gramme fees required for the remainder of the academic year.
• All matters relating to student rights and responsibilities will be handled in accordance with Southern Institute of Technology’s Policies and Procedures, as outlined in student handbooks.
Privacy- Southern Institute of Technology collects and stores information from
this form to comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Education (student registration and Unit Standard outcomes), Tertiary Education Commission (funding returns), Industry Training Organisations (funding and academic academic outcomes), and Inland Revenue Department (student loan interest rebate).
