Laptops Require Protection Too

PC hard drives on desktops and laptops represent a huge amount of data outside the network. It’s easy to ignore or forget, but that data creates major weak spots in an organization’s security defenses. A growing number of workers are remote – 25% in some industries – and their notebook PCs are extremely vulnerable.

Back up of those hard drives can easily be le out of the IT budget. Data is some-times seen as noncritical or it’s assumed that users can easily recreate it. However, the fallout from unprotected PC or notebook data can include legal and compliance issues, customer service problems and brand or competitor issues. Consider that the average PC contains more than 4,000 unique files, but only 25% of companies

routinely back up client hard drives. When hard drives fail, or laptops are lost or stolen, this has significant impact on both IT and user productivity.

Even if recovery attempts work, the negative impacts of a loss or breach aren’t trivial. One study found that each incident of hard drive failure, including both IT staff time to recover data and lost employee productivity, carries a $2,900-plus price tag to resolve. For even a medium-sized organization, that could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars per year that they don’t need to spend.

The Challenges of Protecting Laptops

Laptop backup policies may be piecemeal and insufficient, but they’re hard to enforce, too. It is essential to identify a consistent, secure, organization-wide approach to PC backup.

Laptop protection must work everywhere the user needs it to, whether connected to the internet or not. It has to protect data from the minute it’s created through its lifecycle. And it must constantly work in the background.

But laptop and notebook protection doesn’t need to be a burden for IT staff. A comprehensive solution like Data Protector Notebook Extension protects data

regardless of whether the user is on- or offline, creates a transparent user experience, and unburdens IT staff from the task of laptop data recovery.

Freedom To Roam

Data Protector Notebook Extension combines a local repository with a network data vault so that notebook users are protected whether they are connected to the internet or not. e local repository eliminates the need for users to be connected to the corporate network in order for their data to be protected. It also allows data to be protected continuously, and eliminates the end user urge to opt out of their backups.

Reduce Impact on IT Staff

Centralized protection of laptop data can save IT staff endless hours – and hundreds of thousands of dollars – dealing with hardware failures and lost or stolen note-books. In addition, Data Protector Notebook Extension allows end users to recover lost or accidentally deleted files without ever calling the help desk. A simple, single-click menu empowers end users to perform their own recovery whether they’re con-nected to the internet or not.

In addition, Data Protector Notebook Extension streamlines and simplifies the lap-top protection process by allowing IT staff to centrally configure multiple policies for different data types. IT staff can quickly and easily define which files are to be protected, how long they should be retained, and can even allow end users to config-ure certain rights to suit their individual needs. Backup status for each laptop can also be centrally monitored.
