During the Revolutionary War, 30,000 German soldiers served alongside the British Army. Many were from Hesse-Kassel, giving rise to the nickname “Hessians.” Some were only teenagers, like Johannes Reuber, who is featured in the Museum. Maybe you've seen the Hessians' caps, which made them look taller and more impressive in battle. The fronts had pieces of metal dec-orated with lettering and symbols, telling you a soldier's regiment and his homeland. The Museum's collection features exam-ples of the Hessian's unique military headgear. Now, you too can look a little taller and a little more impressive, just like the Hessian soldiers. Using the instructions below, make your own Hessian cap at home! Download full printable PDF instructions for the Hessian Cap Craft. Share your creation with us @amrevmuseum on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.Related PDF

Hessian Cap Craft Materials Need

Two pieces of construction paper Scissors

Stapler

Crayons or Colored Pencils

Optional: Feathers or Pom Poms and Glue Directions

Cut out the template of the cap. You can use this to make your cap or trace it onto a piece of colored paper. Cut two-inch wide strips of the length of the second piece of colored paper for your side pieces.

Decorate the front of your cap! Hessian caps had symbols that represented where they came from. What can you draw that represents you and where you live?

If you want to, decorate the top of your helmet with feathers or pom poms. Staple each of your bands to the outside corners of the helmet.

Measure your bands around your head and staple where they meet.

Your members are your best resource for new membership. Challenge each member to talk

about their C.A.R. experience with three friends this month! What activities did your society

have over the summer? How has C.A.R. added value to their life? When they spread the word,

your society should have some fresh faces in no time.

If there were ever a time to find new

members, that time is NOW. Our new membership promotion, supported by our C.A.R.

Schroeder

The Quincy, Washington American Legion manages a Veteran’s Recognition Wall in

Memorial Park at the center of town. The walls are filled with hundreds of tiles containing a

Veterans name and service information. For the new walls that are not yet filled, there is an

annual contest open to local children to draw patriotic pictures that will then be made into

posters to cover the blank panels on the wall for a full year. Columbia Chapter C.A.R.

member Faith Schroeder had her drawing chosen as one of the winners of the

contest. She was presented with a certificate, American flag, and a crisp $50. She is

shown next to her poster that is now hanging on the wall.

RATTLESNAKE MOUNTAIN SOCIETY

I have a picture of the Rattlesnake Mountain Society participating in the Wreaths

Across America Ceremony, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland, WA. The

ceremony is about teaching our children about freedom and honoring our

veter-ans, and active duty military. The kids love the activity and will assist in

remov-ing the wreaths in January as well.
