GETTING READY

Are you to work on this module?

In this module you will read and making sentences using action words. You know very well that a sentence cannot e called a sentence without an action word or a verb.

This module will teach you how to:

• use verb that agrees with the subject in number

• use the simple present form of the verb Start working now.

REVIEW TIME

Read the following sentences. Tell whether they are declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, or imperative. Write your answer in your notebook.

1. Do you know what a fable?

2. It is a story with animal characters that teaches a lesson. 3. The story “The Wind and the Sun” is an example of a fable. 4. Go to the library and look for tables.

5. Please ask the librarian to help you locate books with fable stories 6. How interesting fables are!

7. Fairy tale stories are also interesting.

8. They are stories which are unbelievable but enjoyed to read. 9. Have you read fairy tale stories?

10. Look for stories with fairy tale characters.

Read the following paragraph and pick out the action word in every sentence. Write it in your notebook.

Here’s a poem about a little turtle.

Read it and take note of the underlined words.

Little Turtle

As little turtle walks his way one day. He meets the snail at the bay.

Sleepy snail says to him “Hey” ! He greets, “ How’s your day? The turtle looks for his home.

Answer these questions:

What do you notice in the sentences under each Column?

In Column A the doer of the action is only one. We have turtle and Angelo.

In Column B the doer of the action is more than one. We have Mother turtle and Baby turtle, fish and crabs, and he and his brothers.

What do you notice about the action words or the verbs used?

Why do you think the verbs used in Column A ends in –s, while the verbs used in Column B do not end in –s?

You will notice that the doer of the action or the subject of the sentence is only one or singular. We add-s to the verb in these sentences. It is in the present form.

In Column B the doer of the action of the subject is more than one. It is plural in form. We use the simple form of the verb with plural subject.

KEEP IN MIND

The –s form of the verb is used to show present time when the subject is a singular noun of pronoun, He, She, or It.

We add -es to verbs ending in ch, sh, z, s and x when the subject in singular. For verbs ending in –y, change y to I and add –es.

Example: dry-dries; fly-flies; study-studies

The simple form of the verb is used in the present time when the subject of the sentences is plural of the pronoun I, You and They.

The simple present form is used to show habitual action. Common Expressions that show habitual action are:
