*The advantages of Public Cloud solutions
*Things to be mindful of and consider
*The 10 step check list
Public Cloud…
Is one of three mainstream cloud computing models:
Private Cloud
Public Cloud
*An environment which is dedicate to servicing multiple organisations
* Maintenance/Management of this environment is the providers responsibility *Commonly referred to as Software as a Service (SaaS)

Private Cloud
*An environment which is dedicate to servicing the needs of a single organisation *Maintenance/Management of this environment is the client’s responsibility
*A combination of Private & Public Cloud services *Can also include a mix of on-site resources

Public Cloud…
Is like a Serviced Office.
*A single environment, occupied by multiple businesses *Owned, Managed & Maintained by the external provider *Each tenant has their own personal, secure office space
The Advantages
* Reduced capital expenditure on IT
* Reduced on-going maintenance & support overheads
* Cost effective
*Improved internet business continuity options
* Access to corporate grade infrastructure without the up front costs
* Mobility *Elastic/Scalable
The good stuff..
Things to be mindful of..
* Data may be stored outside Australia
*Public Cloud Providers offer limited liability over your data
* Less control over problem resolution
* Public Cloud Providers reserve the right to cancel your subscription at anytime
* Emphasised focus on the internet connectivity at your primary business location
Step 1 – Ask these two questions
Can your data legally be stored OS?
* The majority of Public Cloud Providers currently utilise geographically disperse DC’s
* Office 365 * Google Apps
* Australian based users are generally serviced by Singapore
* SalesForce
Step 2 – Evaluate your internet
The internet will be your lifeline!
* 1-5 Users – 5Mbps Down minimum (ADSL)
* Corporate Grade/Service Level Agreement ?
* 16+ Users – 10Mbps Down minimum - Symmetrical Ethernet Service * 6-15 Users – 10Mbps Down minimum (ADSL)
* Failover options – 3G/4G/ADSL?
Is it up to the task?

Step 3 – Requirements Map
A little pain, for long term gain!
* List your Core Business Applications
* Clarify how the assigned staff member performs these functions * Identify who is responsible for performing these functions
* List the functions that these applications perform
* Identify your staff’s current & future access requirements
(Devices & Locations)
(Is the process automated through an application or is the process manually conducted via a Word or Excel document)
Step 4 – Evaluate Providers/Applications
Time to cross reference your requirements map
* Document Management – Google Drive / Microsoft SharePoint Online
* Communication & Collaboration – Google Hangouts / Microsoft Lync * Email & Calendars – Google Gmail & Calendar / Exchange Online
* Document Editing – Google Docs / Office Web Apps & local Microsoft Office
* CRM – SalesForce / MS Dynamics Online / Blackbaud / Sugar CRM * Accounting – Myob Live Accounts / Xero / Quickbooks Online
Step 5 – Test Drive
How does she handle?
* Sign up for the free trials
* Test, test, and test some more!
* Distribute access amongst management for review
* Discuss and compare feedback from all testers
* Revision – Are there any apps that are not performing? * Have management demonstrate the relevant elements to staff
Step 6 – Review Hardware/Software Requirements
Is it time for an upgrade?
* Are your existing Workstations/Laptops compatible? * Evaluate mobile devices for external staff
* Is your Anti-Virus suitable?
(Are Tablets/UltraBooks going to be a better option for mobile staff?)
* Check you Networking Devices – Modem’s & Switches * Is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) now a viable option ?
Step 7 – Select a Cloud Integrator
Technical Review
* Discuss and review your choices and findings to date
(Is a Hybrid Model a viable option?)
*Evaluate potential solutions * Discuss and review potential road blocks
(Internet Connectivity/Non compatible Applications/Existing Hardware/Software)
Step 8 – Cross Check..
Make sure all the pieces fit!
*Confirm Governance & Organisational buy in
*Finalise Solution Design – All in or Hybrid/Cloud Providers * Order Hardware/Software upgrades (if needed)
* Confirm the migration path/timeframes with your Integrator
* Place order/s with relevant Providers/Vendors
(Opt for a Staged Implementation where possible)
Step 9 – Implementation
Get ready to launch!
*Inform staff (and clients) in advance of the Implementation date
(as this may result in temporary loss of access to core systems)
*Conduct the migration over a weekend – where financially viable) * Migrate Documents & Emails first – where technically viable)
* Arrange for your Integrator to be on-site for launch day
Step 10 – Train & Educate
Maximise your ROI!
*Have your integrator provide training to staff before and on day 1
(Win over those nay-sayers!)
*Follow this up with additional group training and education session
