Dear Class of 2018:

Virginia Commonwealth University takes pride in the

work it does to educate, create, research, heal and serve.

The education students receive here is relevant not only to

what is happening today, but also to whatever may be in

the future.

Today we celebrate, as you, the Class of 2018, become

graduates of VCU. Your success at one of America’s great

public research universities signifies that you have done more

than complete your courses and receive grades. Your degree

signifies years of hard work and dedication to refining your

skills and acquiring new ones. Your dedication to academic

excellence will translate well to whatever you choose to do in the future.

For 180 years, your alma mater has focused on preparing students for a future as creators,

educators, healers, innovators and entrepreneurs. As a graduate of VCU, I hope you will

remember that your opportunities are without limit because your potential is limitless.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, students and proud alumni of Virginia Commonwealth

University, I congratulate you on the remarkable achievement of your Commencement.

We are incredibly proud of you and wish you the brightest future possible.

Best wishes,

Michael Rao, Ph.D.

2018 Recipient

Boris Kodjoe

Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

Boris Ofuatey-Kodjoe is an actor and philanthropist.

Kodjoe currently stars as Dr. Will Campbell in the CBS medical drama “Code Black.” Previous TV roles include Phil Miller in “The Last Man on Earth,” playing himself in “The Real Husbands of Hollywood,” Steven Bloom in “Undercovers,” and sports agent Damon Carter in Showtime’s “Soul Food.” For his work on “Soul Food,” he received three NAACP Outstanding Supporting Actor nominations.

He made his Broadway debut in 2008 in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” where he starred as Brick, opposite legendary actor James Earl Jones. On the big screen he starred in films such as “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” “Brown Sugar,” “Love & Basketball,” “Surrogates,” “Addicted,” and most recently, Kodjoe was the voice of Klaus in “Ferdinand,” the animated film adaptation of the childhood classic, “The Story of Ferdinand.”

He is also a philanthropist who with his wife, actor Nicole Ari Parker, is dedicated to raising awareness of health disparities surrounding birth defects via their nonprofit, Sophie’s Voice Foundation. The foundation was estab-lished in honor of their daughter who was diagnosed at birth with the neural tube defect spina bifida. Together, they advocate for educating women on the issue, folic acid fortification of foods and family outreach programs to address the needs of those affected with spina bifida.

Kodjoe attended VCU on a tennis scholarship and graduated with a bach-elor’s degree in marketing. As a student-athlete, he was a four-year letterman and is 11th in VCU Tennis history with 75 career single wins. During his time with VCU Tennis, he was ranked as high as 29th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Upon graduation, Kodjoe was signed as a model and eventually started studying acting. He was inducted into the VCU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.

Born in Vienna, Austria, and raised in Gundelfingen, Germany, to a Ghanaian father and German mother, Kodjoe now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their two children, Sophie and Nicolas.

The Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters is Virginia Commonwealth University’s highest form of recognition. Presented by the president at Commencement, it recognizes those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to society through scholarship, public service, humanitarianism, science and art.

Edward A. Wayne Medal

The Edward A. Wayne Medal was established in 1971 to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions or provided exemplary services to Virginia Commonwealth University. Presented by the president at Commencement, the medal is named in honor of Edward A. Wayne, who was chair of the commission that led to the establishment of VCU in 1968 by the Virginia General Assembly. Mr. Wayne served as the university’s first vice rector.

Charles Crone is the retired president of MC Wholesale Club and the former vice president of the Williamsburg Pottery. He attended Frederick College in Portsmouth, Virginia, and holds hon-orary alumnus status at the College of William & Mary. Ginny Crone is retired from BASF Corp. She holds a B.S. in economics from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from William & Mary.

The couple’s exceptional generosity has made a great impact on multiple areas of VCU, includ-ing Massey Cancer Center, MCV Foundation, VCU Health, College of Health Professions, and the schools of Medicine and Nursing. Through three decades of involvement, they have made the schools, centers and clinics across the medi-cal campus better and stronger.

In 1987, Ginny and Charles organized a Massey 5k fundraiser in Williamsburg. The annual event

has grown substantially over the years, raising $300,000 for cancer research. The couple has also taken an instrumental role with the MCV Foundation’s Discovery Series, a program to raise awareness beyond Richmond of the outstanding research, care and education on the MCV campus. Charles has actively served on several boards, includ-ing the MCV Foundation Board, the Campaign for the Heart Center Advisory Board, and as a founding and now emeritus member of the Massey Cancer Center Advisory Board.

The Crones have also given generously of their time and support to other organi-zations, including Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, Walsingham Academy, Hargrave Military Academy, William & Mary, Literacy for Life, Rotary International, the Williamsburg Health Foundation, Housing Partnerships and Child Development Resources.

Ginny and Charles’ passionate dedication to VCU through 30 years of philanthropy and volunteer engagement has been extraordinary. Their devoted service will leave a meaningful and lasting impact on our community for years to come.

The Crones live in Williamsburg and have two adult children and twin grand-daughters.

The Virginia Commonwealth University Board of Visitors Award recognizes the achievements of an outstanding undergraduate student who represents the distinctive attributes of a VCU student: outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service to the university and the community at large. The recipient of the award will receive a

one-year scholarship in the amount equal to in-state tuition and fees.

Board of Visitors Award

Terry Levon Everett, a junior biology major, exemplifies the spirit of Virginia Commonwealth University.

Since childhood, Everett always strived to be the best individual he could be — through excellent aca-demic achievement, leadership and service. From honor societies to team sports, he was highly involved in every community he joined and upon arriving to VCU, he partook in the Lewis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation and Ram Camp lead-ership programs. In 2015, Everett completed the I-LEAD retreat, foster-ing a great rapport with the faculty and staff of the Student Leadership

and Involvement Center, and continued his outstanding service on campus. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2016, he and his friends filmed a #BlackExcellence rap video, which highlighted their future aspirations to become doctors and garnered over 100 million views on social media. Soon after, Everett and his family started B the Movement, a motivational speaking company where he and his twin brother, Terrence, give speeches at events in impoverished and underrepresented communities. Over the past two years, they have traveled to 17 cities across the United States inspiring youth and young adults.

Everett has served as a New Student Orientation leader and currently serves as a student ambassador, health promoter and advocate, research assistant, CEO of B the Movement, and vice president of the Theta Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He also sits on multiple com-mittees for inclusivity. This summer, he will conduct biomedical research at Michigan State University and intends to study abroad after graduation. In the future, Everett plans to own a practice with his brother that includes a department for teenage students to learn and be inspired to pursue their goals and dreams.

A native of Newport News, he is one of four children of Terrence and Tikishia Everett.

Academic Costume

The academic costume worn at American

college exercises derives from the Middle Ages.

The oldest universities of northern Europe, such

as Paris and Oxford, grew out of church schools,

and both faculty and students were regarded in

the Middle Ages as a part of the clergy. They wore

clerical habits, largely borrowed from the

monas-tic dress of that day, not just on special occasions

but as their regular attire.

The head covering of the academic costume

developed from the skull cap worn by the clergy

in cold weather to protect the tonsured head. In

the universities, the skull cap acquired a point on

top, which evolved into a tassel. The bonnet with

tassel is still worn by degree holders of European

universities. In America, it has been replaced

by the familiar mortar board, which still retains

the medieval tassel.

The hood (the medieval caputium) was

originally a covering worn over the head in bad

weather, otherwise dropped on the shoulders as

the monk’s cowl. At first it was worn by faculty

and students alike, but in the early 16th century

it was restricted to graduates, thus becoming the

mark of a degree holder. Today, each college has its

distinctive hood lining by which its graduates may be

recognized in academic processions. Graduates from

Virginia Commonwealth University may wear a

hood showing a black chevron on gold background.

The gown comes from the medieval robe and

seems to have been borrowed from the habit of

the Benedictine monks. In the Middle Ages,

undergraduates, bachelors and masters could be

distinguished by the simplicity or intricacy of their

gowns. The doctor’s gown was often furred, which

survives today in the ornamentation found on

the doctoral gown. Usually the gown is black, but

some colleges have gowns of different colors.

The wide velvet borders extending down the

front of the doctoral gown, the velvet bars on the

sleeves, and the borders of most hoods are colored

according to the scholarly field of the wearer.
