Contents

Grand Foundation

The Grand Foundation (GF) is a community-based, independent not-for-profit organization, formerly known as the Arts Leadership Alliance (ALA).

The original ALA was founded in 1998 to promote the cultural development of the community. Its activities on behalf of the city include developing and implementing programs which foster the broadest possible public use of the cultural arts programs at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

The Grand Foundation has served to advance technical support and programming of the Grand with annual underwriting contributions since opening in 2007. Foundation underwriting has supported concerts, exhibitions, classes, workshops and special events, in addition to providing art supplies, art making and technical equipment and hospitality services. Last year the Grand Foundation, working collaboratively with the City, premiered a Membership Program at the Center.

Arts Education Program

The Arts Education Program operates full-time with classes scheduled Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays. Classes are offered weekdays from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9 am - 2:30 pm.

Students of all ages take advantage of year-round courses taught by accomplished and experienced teachers. Our unique interdisciplinary arts center houses nine specialized classrooms for private or group instruction in the visual and performing arts. The Arts Education Program relies on enthusiastic instructors who are committed to quality and professionalism. We are currently seeking Contract Instructors to offer programs in Summer 2016 and subsequent sessions.

Dance

KINDER COMBO

A great class to see what form of dance a child would like to learn more about. After the age of 6, a child will be ready to move on to a class that focuses on one form of dance for an hour at a time. This class will allow children to experience ballet, tap, jazz within one hour and when the time comes they will be able to determine what form interests them.

COLOR ME DANCE (TODDLERS)

In this lively and engaging class, toddlers will be introduced to creative movement, dance, and music. With gentle stretching, upbeat movement, this class provides a fun introduction to ballet and tap dancing. The children will be learning about classic techniques that will both be enjoyable as well as enhance their co-ordination, learning, and listening skills.

COLOR ME DANCE

While learning ballet, tap technique and vocabulary, children will share the joy of physical self-expression through fun, playful and engaging routines and activities. They will be introduced to and experience age appropriate coordination, and dance skills with upbeat music and movement.

This class is a ballet jazz combo class for the 6 - 8 year old. We begin class with technical attributes of a ballet barre with stretching and end class with a lively jazz dance combination, using isolation, traveling across the floor and traditional classical jazz steps to a variety of music.

PARENT/CHILD DANCE CLASS

FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

This class is for the student 5 and up. This class is designed for a special bonding experience for the child with special needs and their parent. We are there to have fun. We use a variety of all dance techniques and develop dances and creative movement experiences. This class helps with balancing, strengthening, flexibility, and coordination. All are welcome. We can adapt to needs easily and safely.

INTRO TO MODERN DANCE

TECHNIQUE

This class is an introduction to modern dance and how it emphasizes the use of the floor for centering and grounding oneself in creative movement. It includes basic modern dance technique, combinations, floor and barre exercises, moving across the floor, musicality and rhythm. Students will learn how this form of dance can increase flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, mind/body awareness, and relieve stress.

POLYNESIAN DANCE

These classes are for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Students will learn to tell stories from the islands through movement and dance. They will learn basic skills of Polynesian Dance including basic footwork, hip motion, and traditional hand movements within a choreographed dance routine. Class meets once a week for 8 weeks.

INTRO TO CUBAN SALSA & RUEDA

LEVEL 1 & 2

In these two level courses students will first be introduced to the dance and then be able to learn some routines. These are both fun, social, partner dances that are becoming more and more popular throughout the world. In these special workshops you’ll learn the essential steps and movements for both the one-on-one and group forms of the dance.

AFRICAN CARIBBEAN

DANCE & MOVEMENT

Learn fun African-Caribbean dance moves during a great aerobic workout! Strengthen and tone muscles, while gaining cardiovascular endurance. A great fun way of learning Afro-Caribbean traditional dance styles!

CREATIVE DANCE

Come enjoy creativity through movement and improvisation. While incorporating classic dance vocabulary, students will have the opportunity to explore dance movements in a fun, creative and supportive environment. They will learn how to put movements together, and about the joy of physical self-expression through dance. We will focus on positive body awareness, strength and flexibility, range of motion, coordination, creativity, and teamwork.

Ballet Folklorico Raíces Mexicanas (Roots of Mexico) was founded in 2006 by Maria Valdovinos who believed that Mexican traditional dance should continue throughout the San Joaquin County. Our mission is to continue educating people about our Mexican heritage through our traditional dancing.

MUSIC TOGETHER

®

Music Together® recognizes that all children are musical,

and that every child needs a stimulating, supportive music environment to achieve basic competence in the wonderful human capacity of music making. Adults and children come together for 45 minutes to sing songs, experience rhythm chants, dance and move to music, play instruments, make up silly rhymes for songs and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic variety. This live music making takes place in a fun, playful, non-performance oriented and age-appropriate setting, with adults and teacher acting as encouraging role models. Classes are led by a registered Music Together® teacher.

Class meets for 10 weeks.

BABIES CLASS

The Music Together® Babies Class will start you on the path

to becoming a musical family. Specifically designed for infants eight months and younger, this one-semester introduction to Music Together® allows babies to embrace, enjoy, and

express their inborn musicality. In your weekly class, you will spend 45 minutes singing, dancing, and playing with your child, all in the company of other new parents and guided by an early childhood music specialist. You’ll learn how your child is developing musically and how you can support this growth at home. Plus, you’ll leave with lots of ideas on how to play and bond musically together and infuse music into your baby’s everyday life. Class meets once a week for 10 weeks.

MASTER CLASS

This class is primarily for children in the 3 - 7 year age range who are experienced in Music Together® and would like to be

in a class with other older children. We know that older children thrive in a structured environment but still like to get silly. We will experiment with new activities like

conducting and improvisation, story songs, and game songs. Younger siblings and children are still welcome! Adults and children come together for 45 minutes each week to sing songs, experience rhythm chants, dance and move to music, play instruments, make up silly rhymes for songs and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic musical variety. Classes are led by a registered Music Together® teacher.

PIANO FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS

Level 1

By combining two pre-school piano programs, students will learn to recognize piano keys and the sounds they make as well as music written on a staff. With the use of color coded notation, color strips, as well as the 5 finger friends’ warm-ups, songs, and games, children will develop recognition of colors, numbers, patterns, classification, and rhythm. They will also establish the “three c’s” concentration, coordination, and confidence.

Level 2

This level presents new note values, staff symbols, and rhythms with a few more complicated songs.

Explore the basics of playing piano using Alfred’s Basic Group piano course. Beginning with Level 1A, students will complete the first half of the method book, and then the other half in Level 1B. That is a total of 16 weeks to complete both level 1A & 1B. The format of each lesson includes a warm up song or rhythm, review, piano exercises, new lesson, piano theory activity, and musical adventure games. Students will gain coordination and confidence as they move through lessons.

After completing Level 1A & B, students will be ready to begin the second level of Alfred’s Basic Group piano course.

Come and feel the beat! Learn African drumming and folkloric songs used for celebrations and the tradition of creating community. GLASS CRACKLE BOWL

Curious about working with glass? Begin exploring with glass in making beautiful bowls with a crackle design, much like the way sand looks as you press on it. GLASS ARTISANS OF TRACY

Glass Artisans of Tracy is a group of artists and students who meet to support the development of fused glass art in Tracy, CA, and the surrounding area. Members will find postings of program updates, announcements, and other materials related to the glass arts program through our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/GlassArtisansofTracy. Fused glass students can work independently alongside other artists in the glass studio. Students should be prepared with their own ideas and projects in mind to work on during this time. Come join us for some creative fun! Projects will include pinch and coil pots, slab construction and sculpture. Participants will also have plenty of free choice time to create on their own. All pieces will be glazed with non-toxic lead free glazes.

YOUTH WHEEL THROWING

Always wanted to try a throwing pot? Come give it a try in this relaxed environment. Small classes provide participants with ample one on one instruction. Instructor demonstrations provide helpful visual learning. Basic throwing skills will be learned including trimming.

The Grand is pleased to provide cone 6 electric kiln firing services to the local ceramic arts community. We will provide you with a finalized price when pieces are ready for pick up. Please note this special service is contingent on our acceptance of materials to be fired; we reserve the right to reject work that includes paper, metal, or unidentified materials. Join us Thursday nights for extra time to practice the skills you are learning in class. AFRICAN D’JEMBE DRUMMING

& DANCE

Learn African drumming, dance and folkloric songs used for celebrations and the tradition of creating community. In this workshop, both the African D’jembe drumming and African Caribbean Dance classes are combined, giving the students a chance to learn how these styles of music and dance come together. Students will alternate between drumming and dance throughout the class, so as to gain experience in both.

BALLET FOLKLORICO

Join us for a one week workshop for intermediate to advanced level Ballet Folklorico dancers! At the end of the workshop, each participant will receive a commemorative gift. Ballet Folklorico Raices Mexicanas (Roots of Mexico) was founded in 2006 by Maria Valdovinos who believed that Mexican traditional dance should continue throughout the San Joaquin County.

Our Mission is to continue educating people about our Mexican heritage through our traditional dancing.

How do I register for a class?

To register for a class in person or by fax, complete the registration form located on page 23. Make sure to include your name, contact phone number, and the class number that corresponds to the class in which you wish to enroll.

Bring the completed form to the Grand Theatre, Patron Services, located at 715 Central Avenue in Historic Downtown Tracy. Registration forms can be faxed to (209) 831-6271 or emailed to [email protected]. Online registration is available at www.tracyartsandrec.com. All fees must be paid at the time of registration.

What if a class is full?

If you attempt to register for a class and find that it is full, you may ask Patron Services Staff to place your or your child’s name on a waiting list. If a space does become available in the class, Patron Services Staff will contact the waiting list candidates in order of time on the list.

What is a Resident Discount and Cost fee?

If your address has five digits or more, your home may still be outside of Tracy city limits. It is possible to live in one of three Tracy zip codes and still not live within the Tracy city limits. Families residing inside the city limits receive the Resident Discount. All others pay the non-residents fee. Call Patron Services if you are unsure.

Is financial assistance available?

Yes, financial assistance is available to qualified applicants. Participants may request a financial aid application from Patron Services Staff and return it with the required forms of income verification. Applications must be accompanied by a registration form.

Is late registration available?

If space permits, class registration will be open for up to one week after the first day of class. After the first week of instruction, registration will be closed. Students are not allowed to register halfway through the class session, or for a fraction of the class.

Can I drop in the day of class to sign up?

Guests may not drop in to a class without having officially registered. In order to participate in a class, you must be enrolled. Guests may visit Patron Services at the Grand Monday through Thursday, 8 am - 6 pm or Friday 8 am - 5 pm to register. Limited registration services are available on Saturdays through Arts Education staff. If a student registers the day of the class, they are advised to bring their receipt. Instructors cannot accept payments. All financial transactions and registrations take place through Patron Services at the Grand, online at

www.tracyartsandrec.com or through Arts Education staff.

What if I withdraw from a class?

To withdraw from a class and obtain a full refund, you must complete the “Class Withdrawal Form” at least five business days prior to the start of class. If you decide within the first week of class that you are not satisfied, you may withdraw and receive a prorated refund or credit. All withdrawals or transfers will be charged a non-refundable $5 transaction fee. These fees do not apply to withdrawals made on tracyartsandrec.com. Please allow 2 - 3 weeks to process a withdrawal and/or a refund.

What happens if the class does not meet the

minimum student enrollment?

If a class does not meet the minimum student enrollment, staff or the instructor may cancel the class. Students will be notified of the cancellation in advance, and issued a full refund or class credit and will not be charged a transaction or refund fee.

What if I miss a day of class?

If you miss a day of class, you will not receive a make-up session or a refund for the day you missed. By registering for a class, you assume the responsibility of attending class during the times and dates scheduled. The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts will only issue a make-up day or a prorated refund for classes canceled by staff or instructors. If a class is canceled by the instructor, or an unforeseen circumstance prevents the class from taking place, the student will be notified.

Are art materials provided in classes?

The Grand Theatre Center for the Arts does provide shared art supplies and equipment for most visual arts classes. In some cases instructors may request that students purchase specific materials outside of class. See class descriptions for more details.

Where is the nearest available parking?

Free parking is available on Central Avenue and 7th Street, as well as in nearby lots on 6th Street in Historic Downtown Tracy. Please observe City-posted signs to avoid parking tickets.

Are parents allowed to observe classes?
