PROJECT 1: DIF OCOTLAN

NAME OF THE PROJECT

1. DIF OCOTLAN LOCATION Ocotlán, Jalisco

THEME OR AREAS OF PROJECT

Day nursery for children of single and resourceless mothers.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT This nursery offers a cheap option to single mothers, which

study or work all day and can’t afford a private nursery for their children.

To provide with food, care and education to little children, between 1 and 6 years old.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES This project takes care of children during the time their

mothers are working or studing.

The children receive pre-basic education, play games, they eat breakfast and lunch and receive all the special care they need according to their age.

A special concern for the DIF Ocotlán is the transmition of moral values to children, as well as psychological care in order to prevent future problems related to children’s behavior.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT Ocotlán is a small city with important problems such as unemploiment, drug addiction, alcoholism, etc.

Most of the children come from dysfunctional and low resource families.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS  Responsible

 To have patience with children and lots of energy. Desirable:

 Basic Spanish level

PROJECT 2: DIF MUNICIPAL + HOGARES

NAME OF THE PROJECT

2. DIF MUNICIPAL

LOCATION Toluca and also in México City

THEME OR AREAS OF

PROJECT To take care of street children.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT To help children who are at risk of living on the streets or who are already homeless, providing them with protection, affection and understanding. In addition provide an overall education and development that shall contribute to the recovery of their self-respect and enhance their possibilities of having a good life in adulthood.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES DIF is a public institution that offers a real option for children who are at risk of living on the streets or who are already homeless.

With the institution's support, the rehabilitated children have proved that they are capable of regaining their self-respect and initiating a life project, having the appropriate basis of education, health and social relationships.

The project also has some other activities such as taking care of handicaped people. When the volunteer arrives he together with the project will decide the area to work within.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT DIF Municipal is part of the local governments. It works with the most vulnerable sectors of society. You will work with street children, children from poor families or children without parents; the project gives them nourishment, accommodation and school.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Volunteers need to be tolerant and should have a lot of patience.

Punctuality, positive attitude, motivation and initiative for activities with the children.

Desirable: Basic level of spanish.

VOLUNTEER’S TASKS  Language classes. (English - basic level)

 Teaching songs, games and intercultural activities in a different language.

 To take care of children during daily life

 Computer lessons to children

 Sport activities with children.

 You will work with children from 5 to 15 years old.

2. HOGARES PROVIDENCIA TOLUCA I. A. P. LOCATION Toluca, the State of Mexico.

THEME OR AREAS OF PROJECT

Shelter for street girls from 6 to 18 years old. Here they receive education and training for getting a job when they have grown and leave the streets.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT Improving living conditions for street children, offering a warm place where they can sleep, have food and education.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES  It caters for the basic needs of youth and children in the street, trying to take them to this place and giving them education so they can be reintegrated into the society

 Protect girls from the danger of living in the street, helping them to find a new and positive future.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT Toluca is a big industrial city. It has more than 467,000 inhabitants and is about 66km away from México city.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS  Interest in working with children

 Responsible and motivated to help the others

 Age between 18 – 30 years old.

 Basic knowledge of the English language and computers.

Desirable:

 Basic level of Spanish

VOLUNTEER’S TASKS  To share, play and help the children in their needs, make them feel well.

 Work with children or youth already integrated to a new life in the project

 Supporting the educators in the educative workshops

 Help girls with their homework

 Supporting the cook and the project assistant

PROJECT 3: SUENIÑOS

THEME OR TYPE OF PROJECT

The project is aimed at providing sustainable projects for indigenous children, youths and adults of different ages, coming from the city and from vulnerable nearby communities.

Work Strategies : care, social inclusion, awareness , training Mission:

Promote education with the children to be self-sufficient individuals and entrepreneurs strengthening the mental, physical, sociocultural and educational development from the family, schools and colonies.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Sueniños is an educational center, The project is divided in different programs aimed at different age groups. With the common purpose of promoting education in marginalized indigenous communities and better their living conditions.

The aims:

Design and execute sustainable projects for the the children successfully completed compulsory school and learn to make their dreams through their knowledge, talents, skills and values .

Offer the means for parents and mothers to improve their living and support their sons or daughters in their training.

Work effectively with public institutions , schools and civic associations

They serve 60 children in their workplace after school where they eat, clean themselves, do their homework and participate in various literacy activities, arts, among other development of skills and competencies.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT Desarrollo Educativo Sueniños A.C works with the marginalized populations of the northern communities of the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, specifically from the municipalities of Tenejapa, Chamula, Chenalho y Oxchuc, where the majority of the communities speak their native language.

The children at Sueniños come mainly from families with many children and their parents are mostly illiterate and have no training. Therefore, parents cannot earn enough money for living expenses -often it is not enough even for the daily meal.

VOLUNTEER’S ROLE AND TASKS

Working in the organization of activities, events and programs involving children and youths.

Workshops and games with children, such as artistic drawing and singing.

Develop new ideas in order to enrich the program.

Participate in the reunions involving strategic planning for educational projects.

Evaluate the project progress across a school year.

Assist in the preparation of food for the young and the children. Assistance in the translation of documents.

Desarrollo Educativo Sueniños A.C offers an intensive 3 week course in Spanish for volunteers staying for 12 months.

PROJECT 4: DELAFAM

NAME OF THE PROJECT

4. ESTANCIA INFANTIL DELAFAM A.C.

LOCATION Plazuela de San Francisco 1447, Plazas Amalucan, Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza, Puebla.

THEME OR AREAS OF PROJECT Improving quality of life for children with motor, sensory and mental disabilities, in order to facilitate their

participation and inclusion in working groups. Raising awareness, public understanding of disability and their families. We use two programs: COMAMOS JUNTOS Y APRENDAMOS JUNTOS.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT Helping children with special educational needs, to feed nutritiously (strengthening the brain) and promote learning to be integrated into regular schools.

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES PROGRAMS:

 COMAMOS JUNTOS/ EATING TOGETHER We believe that proper nutrition will help keep your body in perfect condition. "The brain is a body part and the most important one”.

 APRENDAMOS JUNTOS/LEARNING TOGETHER

It is commitment to training, development, growth and promotion of human beings in the constant search for truth and knowledge enrichment, responding to the challenges and demands of society. Better quality for motor, sensory and mental disabilities in order to ensure their participation and inclusion in working groups and the acceptance in their family.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT DELAFAM (De la Familia con Amor A.C) provides food and promotes learning in children with special

educational needs from families that lack resources to meet needs for food and education.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS Basically projecting patience, fortitude and love, be willing to learn, teamwork, humility, optimism, creativity, enthusiasm, responsibility and honesty.

VOLUNTEER’S TASKS  Teaching the children to eat properly, covering part of the adaptive ability of self-care.

 Speech therapy: Helping each child to do exercises for the joint (to tongue, lips and cheeks), breath exercises and absorption (whistling movements) and breathing exercises.

 Motor therapy: to help each child to make cerebral gymnastics, such as Brain Buttons, Cross Crawl, The Frightened, Tense and Slacken.

We want to strengthen and empower children, adolescents and their families in Tacubaya area to risk factors associated with homeless to encourage their development and their life project. Work in health care ( nutrition, hygiene , medical checkup , psychology ) and education (tasks, regularization , painting , sport, English ) to avoid this process of homeless :

Homeless is a process by which children and adolescents, for various risk factors, they go from being in a house with a family stay long in the street to reach their homes.

Risk Factors in Tacubaya that generate homeless :

 Disintegration of family environment

 Mental Health Problems

 Physical and Sexual Abuse

 Poor school level education system and desertion

 Much time in the street

 Child exploitation

 Poverty

 Hunger and Malnutrition

 Uncontrolled growth of suburbs causing overcrowding and promiscuity

 Drug Addiction and Alcoholism

 Narco retail , vandalism, crime

AIMS OF THE PROJECT We are a nonprofit organization whose goal is to support children and families living in the most vulnerable areas of Mexico City mainly Tacubaya area and surroundings.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF INTERVENTION

Objective 1: Improving education and the overall health of children and adolescents at risk of homelessness in Tacubaya for its full and healthy development.

Objective 2: Develop in Tacubaya families the tools and skills necessary to provide a healthy and motivating family.

Objective 3: Strengthen psychoeducational strategies at Tacubaya educational community for better achievement.

Objective 4: Promoting within the community services available to live in a safer environment and reduce street vendors.

COMMUNITY CONTEXT The place where we make our intervention is a big area, where street vendors abound countless neighborhoods and other “lost cities " places where multiple families can live in the same space with limited health , education and others.

Because of overcrowding that lends itself to living in such close spaces, it is common to have promiscuity overcrowding and the consequences that represents: sexual abuse, incest, child prostitution, etc .

In these places we can identify the population who are dedicated to strictly street trade , sweatshops , domestic workers and even some ex-convicts and prostitutes , who need to leave a long time their children alone , for a high rate of youth crime , single mothers , homeless risk , dropout , neglect , sexual exploitation,

child labor , violence, abuse , causing a large number of cases with various psychological and educational needs.

VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS We are looking for volunteers that want to share their talents, willingness and commitment to a group of children and youth at street risk in the area of Tacubaya through various workshops we offer: education, mental health, nutrition, arts and recreation, values education, etc.. And where volunteers have the opportunity to join innovative ideas, dynamism and commitment to be part of this project.

VOLUNTEER’S TASKS The volunteer can help with various tasks.

 KITCHEN: preparing food, serving food and helping children to eat.

 SWEET PRODUCTION PROJECT CRAFT: Learn to prepare sweets, clean walnut or tamarind, help in sales, administration and accountability of microenterprise.

 BAZAR: Assist in the classification and management of donations and the sale of Community Bazaar.

 ADMINISTRATION systematize information in Excel, translate documents, search english calls, receptionist, take photos of events, etc..

 MAINTENANCE: cleaning the dishes and kitchen, order classrooms, maintenance of general spaces, walk our pet.

 EDUCATION: To help make playful activities with children, (games workshops, etc.) crafts, sports, art, English, support tasks, join in walks (field and museums) teach an instrument or talent If the volunteer wants.
